Yes—but the Horowitz Andreessen Academy’s tuition-free fellowship is a planned, in-person year in San Francisco, not a college degree or a source of college credit. The founding class is scheduled to run from September 2027 through August 2028. Its advertised “$55K in perks” combines more than $50,000 in compute credits with a $5,000 travel and research budget; that is not $55,000 in cash for students.
What the fellowship offers—and when it starts
The Horowitz Andreessen Academy describes itself as a private, full-time, in-person school for young builders. Its first Founding Class Fellowship is planned for September 2027 through August 2028, with about 50 students expected. The academy’s admissions page and FAQ set out the current plan; the launch announcement was published September 22, 2026.

Tuition is waived for the fellowship. The academy’s launch announcement lists more than $50,000 in compute credits and a $5,000 travel and research budget. The compute credits are access to computing resources, not cash paid to each student. The academy says it raised $42 million in 2026, led by a16z, with individual backers including Tobi Lütke and Garry Tan; that funding is for the school, not a student stipend.
What the “$55K in perks” means for your budget
The headline figure rounds together the announced compute credits and travel-and-research budget. It should not be read as a $55,000 personal grant. The fellowship has no tuition, but attending in person still means covering everyday costs.
#1 Best Overall
- Tuition: none for the Founding Class Fellowship, according to the academy’s launch announcement.
- Compute: more than $50,000 in compute credits are announced; the academy does not describe these as cash.
- Travel and research: a $5,000 budget is announced for these purposes.
- Living costs: students are responsible for arranging and paying for housing, meals, and personal expenses. The admissions page says the academy will work with admitted students on travel, housing, and living-cost assistance, but does not state amounts or promise the same assistance to everyone.
The admissions page also says applicants do not need to include financial need in their applications. A laptop or other equipment is not listed as a requirement in the academy materials; a suitable computer may be useful for project work, but the compute-credit offer is not a device allowance.
How the year is planned to work
The academy’s FAQ describes a year split between campus, an overseas month, and a work placement:
Rank #2
- brand: Pearson
- ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: A MODERN APPROACH, 4TH EDITION
- September through April: in-person time on the San Francisco campus.
- May: a month abroad.
- June through August: a co-op.
The learning model combines student-led “Pursuits,” courses, and co-ops. The FAQ names practical subjects such as founder-led sales, B2B go-to-market, storytelling and new media, leadership, company formation, cap tables, finance, and fundraising. The academy says it aims to help students build with AI, take initiative, pursue ambitious goals, and help others succeed.
Who can apply and what admissions emphasizes
The academy’s admissions page says graduating high-school seniors receive priority. Its launch announcement also says current students at four-year universities and international applicants may apply. The academy is looking for evidence of initiative and work completed—not only interest in AI. Applicants are asked to show what they have built, shipped, researched, organized, or otherwise driven.
Listed first-stage materials include:
- A link to a project portfolio.
- A short video.
- Test scores, if available.
- A high-school transcript.
These are the materials the academy lists; consult its admissions page for the application process and current details.
Is it a substitute for college?
Not in the credential sense. The academy says the fellowship awards neither a college degree nor college credit. Students should not assume the year will transfer into a degree program or count toward graduation requirements. It is better understood as a project-centered gap year or college-deferral option for someone comfortable postponing formal study.
The trade-off is between a year built around projects, practitioner-led courses, co-op experience, peers, and compute resources, and the academic credit and degree progress a student might earn by staying in college. The San Francisco location also brings housing and living costs despite the tuition waiver. A student who needs a credential, transferable credit, or a predictable academic sequence should weigh those differences before deferring enrollment.

The fellowship is scheduled to begin in 2027, so there are no alumni employment figures, completion statistics, or published educational outcomes to assess yet. The dates, cohort size, admissions details, and benefits are plans announced by the academy, not results from an operating cohort.
Best Value
The academy has separately said it intends to seek regulatory approval for a two-year program it hopes to start in fall 2028. That program is not currently offered or enrolling. The academy says it expects tuition for it to be comparable to an elite private university if approved; that is a future possibility, not a current price or an approved program.
For a student deciding whether to defer college, the practical test is whether the fellowship’s hands-on format and lack of credit fit their goals, finances, and tolerance for joining a new program before it has an alumni track record.
