Communications of the ACM is seeking a chair or co-chairs to lead its News Board. The role focuses on shaping news coverage, helping professional writers find appropriate sources, and reviewing articles for quality and accuracy. The October 2, 2026 notice says applicants do not need a Ph.D.
What the News Board chair would do
The announcement describes an editorial leadership role working with a diverse, worldwide board. Its responsibilities are to identify topics for coverage, assist professional writers in finding appropriate sources, and review articles for quality and accuracy. The notice is attributed to Ralph Raiola and was reproduced by Muck Rack; its description of Communications of the ACM as a monthly international computing and IT trade publication is outlet context, not a separate qualification for the position.

The work therefore spans several stages of news production: developing story ideas, supporting reporting, and assessing finished articles. The notice does not describe this as a writing-only role.

What applicants are asked to submit
Interested applicants are asked to submit a short form describing their background and explaining “why and how you would find new ideas for news stories.” The announcement explicitly says a Ph.D. is not required. It does not state other qualifications or specify the form’s fields beyond those points.

The accessible announcement does not specify an application deadline, compensation, appointment length, or expected time commitment. Its linked Communications of the ACM page was inaccessible when the notice was checked, so those terms—and whether applications are still being accepted—should be confirmed directly with the publisher before applying.
The accessible reproduction is at Muck Rack. It points to the publisher, but the publisher page could not be verified from that link. Confirm the current application route and complete terms with Communications of the ACM.
