The realistic options depend on four things: which device and OS version you use, whether the icon belongs to the operating system or an app, whether you want to change visibility or artwork, and whether you are a regular user, app developer, or device-maker engineer.
Identify the exact device and software version first. Android manufacturers expose different controls, Windows labels vary by build, and Apple’s guidance focuses on legibility rather than user replacement of system artwork. The steps and limits below separate consumer settings from developer and OEM controls so you do not mistake an engineering resource for a setting that exists on every phone or computer.

What “status icons” can mean
Status icons are small indicators placed in a system-controlled area of a screen. The same phrase is used for several different surfaces:

- App notification icons: symbols an app posts in a notification area to show a message, service, playback state, or other event.
- Menu-bar status items: app-created items in the macOS menu bar, which may contain an icon, text, menu, action, or custom view.
- Taskbar and tray items: Windows notification-area icons and badges attached to taskbar buttons.
These categories have different owners. The operating system controls system indicators, an app controls its own notification presentation, and a developer can create an app item in an area that the platform provides. Changing an app’s icon is not the same as replacing the operating system’s Wi‑Fi or signal artwork.

What kind of customization is possible?
| Goal | Usually controlled by | What can realistically change | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show or hide a supported item | Regular user or OS policy | Selected tray icons, notification behavior, or app badges where the platform exposes a setting | Only items included in the platform’s supported list can be managed |
| Change an app indicator’s appearance | App developer | Icon artwork, status-bar contrast, background treatment, menu content, or a custom app view | The change applies to that app’s item, not every system icon |
| Change layout around system bars | App developer | Whether app content fits below, behind, or around a status bar | It does not replace the OS-owned symbols |
| Rearrange or replace system artwork | OEM, ROM, or system developer | System resources, spacing, ordering, and visibility in a controlled build | This is platform-level work, not a universal consumer setting |
When someone asks, “Can I change the status-bar icon color?” the first diagnostic question is whether they mean a notification icon inside an app or a system symbol such as Wi‑Fi. App presentation may support contrast and light or dark treatments; arbitrary replacement of system artwork is generally restricted to the operating system or a customized system image.
Android: separate phone settings, app presentation, and system resources
What ordinary Android users can change
Android phones are not identical. The device maker, Android release, launcher, and region can all affect which status-bar or notification controls appear. A setting documented for one manufacturer should not be presented as a standard Android path for every phone.
Start by opening Settings and using its search field for terms such as status bar, notification icons, system icons, notifications, or display. If your phone offers a relevant control, read whether it changes notification visibility, the number of icons shown, battery display style, or a particular quick-setting area. Those are visibility and presentation options; they are not proof that the phone supports replacement artwork.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an app-specific icon, open the app’s notification settings from the phone’s notification controls. Android may let you disable a notification category, silence it, or prevent its icon from appearing while leaving the app installed. Turning off a notification icon can also hide information you rely on, so check the app’s own notification categories before disabling an entire app.
What Android’s system documentation actually supports
The Android Open Source Project documents configurable system resources for status icons. A system build can define icon resources and global configuration values for dimensions such as icon size and spacing, along with visibility and ordering behavior. These resources are intended for system-level configuration and device integration.

That documentation is not a universal Settings path. A resource name in the Android source does not mean a retail phone exposes a toggle for it. An OEM or ROM maintainer may apply an overlay or modify the system configuration, while an unmodified consumer device may provide no supported way to do the same thing. Attempting to replace system resources generally requires control of the system image, an authorized development build, or a device-specific modification process; it can affect updates, security, and support.
What Android app developers can control
Android developer guidance covers how an app presents its status bar rather than how it redraws the operating system’s icons. Developers can design for readable contrast, use transparent or translucent bar treatments where appropriate, and fit app content around the system bars. The app’s own colors and layout can therefore influence the surrounding presentation without changing the underlying Wi‑Fi, signal, or battery glyphs.
Edge-to-edge behavior is enforced on Android 15. An app that assumes content always stops below an opaque status bar can place buttons, text, or tappable controls underneath system icons on that release. Test screens with light and dark backgrounds, cutouts, gesture navigation, and different status-bar icon appearances. Apply insets and contrast choices so the app remains readable rather than trying to hide or imitate system indicators.
When an Android system-level change is appropriate
System icon replacement belongs to an OEM, enterprise image maintainer, or ROM developer with a controlled build pipeline. Define the target Android release, device resolution, cutout behavior, navigation mode, localization, and accessibility requirements before changing resources. Verify that:
- icons remain distinguishable at the smallest supported density;
- light and dark backgrounds preserve contrast;
- ordering does not conceal urgent indicators when several items are active;
- localized or right-to-left layouts do not collide with the clock or camera cutout;
- system updates will not overwrite the customization unexpectedly; and
- the result still communicates the same device state to users who rely on shape, color, or screen readers.
iPhone and iPad: prioritize the system status bar’s meaning and legibility
What users can and cannot generally replace
Apple describes the status bar as a place for device-state information. Its design guidance prioritizes legibility and recommends avoiding permanent suppression of the bar. The reviewed guidance does not establish a general user control for replacing the system’s Wi‑Fi, cellular, battery, or other status artwork.

That means changing wallpaper, app themes, or an icon pack will not provide a supported way to redraw the system indicators. A user may be able to adjust broader display, accessibility, or notification preferences, but those controls should not be confused with arbitrary status-icon replacement.

Apple’s guidance allows temporary hiding when the content benefits from a full-screen presentation, such as video or another immersive experience. The design principle is contextual: keep device-state information available during normal use, and hide it only when the content requires the extra space. An app should restore the bar when the immersive activity ends and maintain enough contrast whenever the bar is visible.
Developer checklist for iPhone and iPad
- Test the status-bar treatment over every background used by the screen.
- Keep text and controls clear of the status area and hardware features.
- Use full-screen presentation sparingly rather than permanently suppressing device-state information.
- Check portrait, landscape, multitasking, and different device sizes.
- Do not imply that an app-owned color or icon has changed Apple’s system artwork.
macOS: create a menu-bar status item instead of replacing macOS icons
What AppKit provides
macOS supports app-created status items through AppKit’s status-bar API. An application can place an item in the menu bar containing text, an icon, a menu, actions, or a custom view. This is the appropriate route for a utility that needs a persistent connection, synchronization, recording, or monitoring indicator.
An app-created item is independent of macOS-owned indicators. It can sit beside them, but it cannot claim ownership of Apple’s Wi‑Fi, battery, clock, or other system artwork. If your goal is to give users a custom indicator, design a separate item with a clear name and behavior instead of imitating a system symbol so closely that users mistake it for device state.
Design for limited menu-bar space
The menu bar has finite horizontal space, and users may run many utilities at once. Apple recommends using status items sparingly and allowing users to hide them. Keep the compact state recognizable, provide a useful menu or action when clicked, and avoid displaying verbose text continuously.

Offer a preference that disables launch-at-login or removes the item when it is not needed. Test at smaller display widths and with longer localized strings. A custom view that looks good on a large monitor can collide with neighboring items on a laptop or when the user increases text size.
Practical macOS implementation decisions
- Decide whether the status item is essential or merely a shortcut. If it is optional, provide a visible way to turn it off.
- Choose an icon or short label that remains recognizable at menu-bar scale.
- Attach a menu or action that explains the item’s current state and offers the next useful command.
- Update the item when the underlying state changes, but avoid rapid animation that distracts users.
- Check contrast, dark and light appearances, localization, and limited-width screens before shipping.
Windows: manage supported tray visibility and taskbar badges
System-tray icon visibility
Windows provides user controls for choosing which supported system-tray or notification-area icons appear. On current Windows 11 builds, the relevant controls are generally under Settings → Personalization → Taskbar, where sections such as Other system tray icons or Taskbar corner overflow may appear. Microsoft changes labels and grouping between builds, so use the Settings search box for taskbar or system tray if the wording differs.
These controls determine whether an available item is shown directly, placed behind an overflow control, or hidden. They do not provide a catalog of replacement artwork for every Windows indicator. A third-party application can supply its own tray icon, but Windows still owns the surrounding system indicators and taskbar behavior.
Taskbar app badges
Windows also documents controls for showing or hiding badges on taskbar buttons. A badge is an app-specific notification marker, not a replacement for the network, power, or volume symbols. If you disable badges, the app may still show notifications through other channels, so review the app’s own notification settings when you need a quieter taskbar.

Developer considerations for Windows apps
Use a tray icon only when it represents an ongoing background function or a convenient control. Make its tooltip understandable, expose a context menu with the primary actions, and provide a setting to disable startup or tray presence when the utility is not needed. Keep the icon legible at the small notification-area size and test high-contrast themes and scaling factors.

How to choose the right customization route
- Identify the platform and version. Record the exact Android manufacturer and release, iPhone or iPad model and iOS or iPadOS release, macOS version, or Windows build.
- Capture the icon and its location. Note whether it appears in a phone status bar, notification shade, macOS menu bar, Windows tray, or on a taskbar button.
- Determine ownership. If it reports battery, network, time, or another device-wide state, treat it as system-owned. If it represents one app’s message or service, treat it as app-owned.
- Choose the smallest effective change. Use visibility or notification controls when you only need less clutter. Ask the app developer for artwork or color changes when the indicator belongs to an app. Reserve system-image changes for OEM or ROM development.
- Check accessibility and meaning. Do not rely on color alone. Preserve recognizable shape, contrast, text alternatives, and predictable placement.
- Test after updates. OS upgrades, manufacturer overlays, display scaling, and localization can change spacing or available controls.
Why a color change may not work
System bars often switch icon treatment automatically to maintain contrast against the current background. An app can request a light or dark presentation for its bar area, but the operating system may retain authority over the final icon glyphs and contrast behavior. A color setting that affects an app’s header therefore may not affect the Wi‑Fi or cellular symbols beside it.
Notification icons can also be normalized by the platform. The app supplies an indicator, but the operating system decides where and how it is rendered so that multiple notifications remain consistent. If a custom-colored notification icon appears monochrome or in a different tint, that may be expected platform behavior rather than a failed installation.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The expected setting is missing: confirm the exact OS release and device maker, then search Settings using the platform’s current terms. Do not follow a path copied from another manufacturer without verifying it.
- You changed an app icon but the Wi‑Fi symbol stayed the same: those are separate ownership layers. Adjust the app’s notification or in-app presentation, not the system indicator.
- Icons disappear after changing notification settings: re-enable the relevant notification category and check whether the item was moved into an overflow area rather than removed.
- Text or buttons sit under the Android status bar: review edge-to-edge and inset handling, especially on Android 15, and test gesture and button navigation modes.
- A macOS menu-bar item crowds other icons: shorten its label, use a compact symbol, add a user-controlled hide option, and test at narrower widths.
- A Windows tray icon is not visible: inspect taskbar corner-overflow or other system-tray settings, then check whether the application is running and allowed to start.
- A custom indicator is hard to understand: restore a familiar shape, add a descriptive label or tooltip, and communicate state with more than color alone.
- An update removed the customization: determine whether the change depended on an OEM overlay, ROM modification, app preference, or unsupported tweak. Reapply only through the supported process for that device or build.
Design and accessibility rules for custom indicators
A status icon is useful only when its meaning is immediate. Pair color with shape, position, text, or a spoken description. Provide a stable inactive state instead of making the icon vanish unless the platform convention clearly indicates absence. Avoid rapid flashing, which can distract users and may be inaccessible.
Check contrast in light and dark appearances, high-contrast modes, tinted wallpapers, and reduced-transparency settings. Verify that the smallest icon remains distinguishable at the system’s actual display scale. For menu-bar and tray items, make the click or tap target forgiving even when the visible artwork is compact.
Document the indicator’s states for support teams and users. A battery symbol, for example, may have different meanings for charging, low power, and an unavailable reading; changing its artwork without documenting those states can create confusion even when the graphic looks attractive.
Bottom line
Customization is practical when you target the correct layer: use supported visibility controls for system and notification clutter, app APIs for an app’s own appearance, and OEM or system-development resources for controlled Android builds. iPhone and iPad guidance emphasizes a legible status bar rather than user replacement, macOS encourages carefully designed app-created menu-bar items, and Windows limits users to supported tray visibility and taskbar-badge controls. There is no universal icon-replacement switch, so begin with the device, OS version, icon location, and ownership before changing anything.
