If you want a prompt-driven tool to turn an idea into a runnable web or Android app, try Google AI Studio Build. It is not a like-for-like replacement for every Claude Design use: the article behind the original comparison characterizes Claude Design as better suited to polished slides and one-page presentations, while favoring AI Studio when the goal is an app. That is the author’s assessment, not an independently verified head-to-head test. Google’s documentation describes AI Studio’s app-building capabilities, not a comparison with Claude Design.
What Google AI Studio Build does
Google AI Studio is a browser-based environment for using prompts to create applications. In Build mode, you can start with a description, remix an example from the App Gallery, or import code from GitHub. Google documents web and Android project options; the resulting code and capabilities depend on which you choose.

For web projects, AI Studio generates a React frontend by default and provides a Node.js server runtime. You can inspect a live preview alongside the code, then request changes through chat or use annotation mode to point to parts of the interface. The agent can install packages and create server-side code. Google also documents setup for Firebase Firestore and Authentication, as well as integrations with Workspace APIs. See Google’s Build mode documentation.

| Need | Google AI Studio Build | Claude Design comparison |
|---|---|---|
| A runnable app | Google documents prompt-built web apps and Android projects. | The comparison article’s author prefers AI Studio for an app that runs; this is an opinion, not a benchmark. [c001] |
| Polished slides or a one-page presentation | The documented Build workflow is for applications. | The author characterizes Claude Design as stronger for polished slides and one-page presentations. Its current feature set and plan terms were not established by the available official sources. [c001] |
| Web backend | Web projects have a Node.js server runtime and can include server-side code. | Not established by the sources used for this comparison. |
| Android app | Projects use Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with the restrictions described below. | Not established by the sources used for this comparison. |
Use that distinction to choose by deliverable, not by the word “design” in a product label. If the work is primarily a presentation, the cited author’s preference points elsewhere; if the goal is a functional app prototype, AI Studio’s documented output is directly relevant.

Web apps and Android apps are not interchangeable
Web projects
Web apps are the more flexible choice when your idea needs a browser interface, a server, or web integrations. Google documents two-way GitHub sync and ZIP download for web projects. You can share an app, but its API calls count toward usage limits, and use of paid models may incur costs. Cloud Run is a deployment option; charges may apply based on usage. Details are in Google’s Build mode documentation.
Android projects
Android output is Kotlin with Jetpack Compose. Google documents a browser-based emulator preview, installation on a physical device, and a path to Play Store internal testing. It is a narrower project format than the web option: projects are client-side only, single-activity and single-module, and Compose-only. They do not support NDK/native code, Wear OS, or Android TV. Android projects can currently be downloaded as ZIP files; Google’s Android documentation says GitHub export is not available. See Google’s Android app documentation.

How to get from prompt to prototype
- Open Google AI Studio and enter Build mode. Describe the app’s purpose, intended users, and the core actions it needs to support. Choose web or Android according to the target platform.
- Start with a focused first version. Ask for the smallest useful flow, such as a form that saves a record or a list with search. A concrete scope makes it easier to assess the generated behavior in the preview.
- Review both the preview and code. Try the main interactions, check error states, and inspect changes. Use chat to request revisions or annotation mode to identify a specific part of the interface.
- Add services only when needed. Web projects can use server-side code and documented Firebase setup; integrations and API calls can affect usage and cost.
- Export or deploy deliberately. Web projects support GitHub sync and ZIP download. Android projects support ZIP download. For deployment, check the applicable Cloud eligibility and billing requirements before publishing.
Is AI Studio free to use and publish?
“Free” has separate meanings here: access to Gemini models and deployment of an app are governed by different terms. Google says new accounts start on the Free Tier, which provides access to certain models subject to free-tier limits. Those limits can change. Google’s billing documentation says paid tiers offer higher limits and that paid-tier prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products, subject to the applicable terms. It also says free-tier prompts and responses may be used to improve Google products. Avoid entering confidential material on the assumption that free-tier use is private.
Deployment is not universally free. Google’s Starter Tier documentation says eligible accounts can deploy up to two full-stack services without setting up billing. Eligibility exclusions include accounts with active or prior paid Google Cloud billing and some Google Workspace accounts. Standard deployment requires a linked Cloud project with billing enabled; Cloud Run charges may apply according to usage. Check the current eligibility and pricing before relying on a no-billing deployment.

What to check before choosing it
- Your deliverable: Choose AI Studio for an app prototype, not on the assumption that it is a general-purpose slide-design tool.
- Your platform: Web offers a server runtime and documented GitHub sync; Android is client-side and has a more constrained project structure.
- Your handoff: Confirm the export route you need before building. Web has GitHub sync and ZIP download; Android currently has ZIP download, with GitHub export unavailable in Google’s documentation.
- Your budget and data: Model limits, paid model usage, and deployment billing are distinct concerns. Review the current Google terms and do not put sensitive information into free-tier prompts.
- Your production requirements: A generated prototype still needs review and testing for security, reliability, accessibility, and fit with your deployment needs.
