Walrus vs. Seal: How to Identify Each Marine Mammal From a Distance

If you can see a paired set of upper tusks, a broad flat muzzle ringed with short whiskers, and an exceptionally bulky body, you are almost certainly looking at a walrus. A true seal has no walrus-like tusks, a smoother and usually narrower face, smaller foreflippers, and typically moves on land by undulating or belly-scooting. Use at least two clues, because distance, viewing angle, age and species can make any single feature misleading.

The fastest reliable answer

Start at the head rather than judging the silhouette. Tusks are the highest-confidence field mark: Smithsonian Ocean notes that, unlike all other pinnipeds, walruses have two canine tusks projecting from the upper jaw. The Norwegian Polar Institute adds that both males and females possess these external tusks. A true seal does not have this walrus-style pair.

Next, look for the muzzle. A walrus has a broad, relatively flat muzzle covered by a dense brush of short, sturdy whiskers. A seal’s face usually appears smoother and narrower from the same distance. Body size supports the identification but should not decide it: adult Pacific walrus bulls can reach 12 feet and up to 2 tons, while females can exceed 1 ton, yet elephant seals can also be enormous.

Neither animal has visible external ear flaps. If you clearly see ear flaps, consider a sea lion or fur seal instead. Finally, watch how the animal travels on land. A walrus can bring its hind flippers under its body and move with a heaving, almost four-footed gait; a true seal normally keeps its hind flippers extended and advances by flexing its body and scooting on its belly.

A step-by-step distance identification method

Work through the following sequence in order. The first two checks carry more weight than color, posture or apparent size.

1. Check for a pair of upper tusks

Look for two light-colored projections descending beside the mouth. They may be obvious in a side profile, partly hidden when the animal faces you, or obscured by water, mud or another animal. Walrus tusks are elongated canine teeth used in foraging and in fights for dominance, according to NOAA. Large bulls can grow tusks about 1 metre long and weighing up to 5 kilograms, a Norwegian Polar Institute upper-end figure rather than a typical measurement.

Both sexes have tusks, so a tuskless-looking animal is not automatically a female. At long range, however, a juvenile’s shorter tusks may be difficult to resolve. Treat a clear pair as decisive; treat their absence as inconclusive until you inspect the muzzle and movement.

2. Inspect the muzzle and whiskers

A walrus muzzle looks broad and flattened rather than pointed. Hundreds of short, strong whiskers project around the mouth. Alaska Department of Fish and Game describes these highly sensitive whiskers as tools for searching the seafloor, while the Norwegian Polar Institute emphasizes the broad, flat muzzle and many short, sturdy vibrissae.

At distance, the whiskers can make the front of a walrus’s face look like a dense, bristly brush. A true seal generally presents a cleaner outline: a smoother nose and cheeks, with whiskers that do not create the same heavy halo. Do not confuse a wet seal’s fur, algae or spray with whiskers; wait for the animal to turn or raise its head if possible.

3. Use overall bulk as supporting evidence

Walruses are thick-bodied animals with a large shoulder and chest, heavy folds of skin and a compact, imposing profile. The Pacific subspecies provides a useful scale reference: adult bulls are reported at up to 12 feet (about 3.7 metres) and 2 tons, and females at more than 1 ton. These are maximum or upper-end profile values, not averages.

Size alone fails because “seal” includes many species. Harbor seals are much smaller than walruses, but elephant seals can rival or exceed a walrus in apparent mass. A distant, isolated body should therefore be classified only after you have checked the head.

4. Check the ears—but understand what the check can and cannot prove

True seals have no external ear flaps. Walruses also lack external ear flaps, as noted by the National Park Service, NOAA and the Norwegian Polar Institute. Consequently, a smooth head with no visible ears does not separate a walrus from a true seal.

Visible ear flaps are useful in the opposite direction. If small external flaps are unmistakable, the animal is more likely to be an eared pinniped such as a sea lion or fur seal. Keep this clue separate from the tusk test: ears can rule out the two animals in this article, but cannot identify one of them by themselves.

5. Watch the animal move on land

When hauled out, a walrus can rotate or curl its hind flippers beneath its body. It may push forward with all four flippers, lift its chest and appear to walk or heave its bulk along. Smithsonian Ocean describes this ability to walk on all fours.

A true seal generally cannot place its hind flippers underneath its pelvis for walking. It keeps them trailing behind and uses side-to-side undulation of the trunk, foreflippers and belly to move. The motion resembles a determined wriggle or scoot rather than a four-limbed walk. On slippery ice or in shallow water, either animal may look awkward, so observe several body lengths of travel before deciding.

6. Add habitat and group behavior as context

Walruses have a circumpolar Arctic distribution. Sea ice, remote Arctic coasts and islands are therefore sensible settings for a walrus sighting. Large, tightly packed haul-outs are also supportive: walruses commonly gather in conspicuous, crowded groups.

Context is never proof. True seals also occupy polar regions, and some species live in temperate waters. A solitary animal on an Arctic shore still needs head and movement checks; an apparent walrus outside its expected setting may be a seal, sea lion, fur seal or a misread object.

Walrus and true seal compared at a glance

Feature Walrus True seal How useful from far away
Upper teeth Two prominent canine tusks in males and females No walrus-like external tusks Highest-confidence clue when visible
Muzzle Broad, flat and heavily whiskered Usually smoother and narrower Strong supporting clue
Whiskers Many short, stiff, dense whiskers forming a bristly mask Whiskers present but usually less visually dominant Useful when the head is unobstructed
Body Exceptionally bulky, with heavy shoulders and folds Usually more streamlined, but species vary widely Supporting clue only
External ears None None Absence distinguishes neither; visible flaps suggest another pinniped
Land movement Can bring hind flippers under the body and move on all fours Usually belly-scoots with hind flippers trailing Strong when the animal is moving
Typical setting Circumpolar Arctic ice, coasts and islands; often large haul-outs Polar and temperate waters, depending on species Context, not a standalone identification

Why tusks are the best first test

Walrus tusks are modified upper canine teeth that protrude from the mouth. They are not seasonal accessories and are not limited to males. NOAA associates them with foraging and dominance contests, while the Norwegian Polar Institute identifies external tusks as the species’ most distinctive feature.

Perspective matters. In a frontal view, the tusks can overlap the muzzle or point toward the camera and appear as one pale shape. In profile, one tusk may hide the other. Reflections, snow and pale driftwood can also create false “tusks.” Confirm that the projections are attached to the mouth and move with the animal. If you cannot verify attachment, downgrade the clue and use the muzzle and gait.

Reading the face when tusks are hidden

Walrus muzzle

The walrus nose sits in a wide, flattened facial platform. The short whiskers are unusually numerous and rigid, and they remain conspicuous even when the rest of the head is wet. A walrus often appears to have a rounded, heavily textured front end rather than a tapered snout.

Seal muzzle

A true seal’s head normally has a cleaner, more streamlined outline. Species differ: some have a rounded nose, others a more dog-like profile, and pups can look especially smooth. The key is not a particular nose shape but the absence of the walrus combination—broad flat muzzle, dense short whiskers and tusks.

How much confidence should size give you?

Use size to support a conclusion already suggested by the head. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Pacific walrus figures—up to 12 feet and 2 tons for adult bulls, with females over 1 ton—show why a mature walrus can dominate a haul-out. The National Park Service describes walruses as the largest pinnipeds in its Alaska nature material.

That does not mean every walrus is larger than every seal. Elephant seals are a critical counterexample and may appear even more massive. Juvenile walruses are smaller than adults, and a seal viewed close to the camera can look larger than a distant walrus. Compare proportions only after establishing whether tusks and the muzzle fit.

Land movement: walrus walk, seals scoot

Movement is particularly valuable when the animal’s face is turned away. A walrus can rotate its hind flippers forward under the body, raise its chest and push with all four limbs. The result is a rocking or heaving stride that can look surprisingly similar to a sea lion’s walk.

A true seal lacks that pelvic rotation. Its hind flippers remain behind the body, and the animal flexes its spine, shoulders and belly to make progress. On a steep beach it may inch forward in short, undulating bursts. In water, this distinction disappears because both animals swim efficiently; wait for a haul-out or shoreline crossing if you need a gait-based identification.

Habitat and social setting: useful context, weak proof

Walruses are associated with the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas around the northern hemisphere. They haul out on sea ice, beaches, rocky shores and islands. A crowded Arctic beach covered by large, thick-bodied animals strongly raises the walrus probability.

Still, seals also haul out in groups and inhabit cold coastlines. Ice, snow and latitude should therefore be treated as a filter rather than an answer. Ask whether the animal’s head and locomotion agree with the setting; do not reverse the process and label every Arctic pinniped a walrus.

Animals that are often mistaken for one of these two

Sea lions

Sea lions have external ear flaps and can rotate their hind flippers under the body. If you see both ear flaps and an agile, upright walking gait, a sea lion is more plausible than either a walrus or a true seal. Sea lions do not have walrus tusks.

Fur seals

Fur seals also have small external ear flaps. Their heads and bodies are generally more streamlined, and the ears may be visible when the animal turns sideways. A clear ear flap is more informative than a vague impression of body shape.

Elephant seals

Elephant seals can be extremely large, so bulk is not enough. Adult males may have a pronounced enlarged nose, but neither sex has the paired upper tusks characteristic of a walrus. Check the mouth and whiskered muzzle before using size.

Juvenile walruses

Young walruses may have shorter tusks, less dramatic bulk and a less obvious facial brush. They can therefore resemble a large seal at distance. Look for even small paired projections, the flat muzzle and the ability to bring the hind flippers forward. When those details cannot be resolved, record the sighting as uncertain rather than forcing a species call.

A practical field workflow

  1. Stabilize your view. Use binoculars or a camera’s optical zoom if available, and watch the animal for several seconds rather than relying on one frame.
  2. Locate the head. Confirm which end is the muzzle before judging teeth, ears or whiskers.
  3. Search for two upper tusks. One visible tusk is suggestive; a matched pair attached to the upper jaw is decisive.
  4. Assess the muzzle. Record whether it is broad and flat with a dense whisker brush or smooth and narrow.
  5. Check the ears. No flaps leaves walrus versus true seal unresolved; obvious flaps point toward a sea lion or fur seal.
  6. Observe movement. Note whether hind flippers swing under the body or trail behind during a shoreline crossing.
  7. Add context. Consider Arctic ice, island or coastal haul-out and group density only after the physical checks.
  8. State confidence honestly. Call it a walrus when at least two independent marks agree, and use “uncertain pinniped” when distance hides the decisive features.

Common identification mistakes and their fixes

  • “It is huge, so it must be a walrus.” Fix: inspect the mouth first; elephant seals invalidate size-only identification.
  • “It has no ears, so it is a seal.” Fix: walruses also lack external ear flaps.
  • “I cannot see tusks, so it is not a walrus.” Fix: change angle, account for juveniles and inspect the whiskered muzzle and gait.
  • “The Arctic location proves it.” Fix: use geography as supporting context; true seals also occur in polar waters.
  • “Any animal that walks is a walrus.” Fix: sea lions and fur seals walk with all four flippers and have visible ear flaps.
  • “One photograph settles it.” Fix: seek multiple views or observe movement; posture, spray and other animals can conceal the key marks.

Viewing responsibly

Keep a safe distance and avoid pressuring a haul-out. Large groups may stampede when disturbed, injuring animals and people. Do not approach to expose hidden tusks, separate a pup from adults or block a route to the water. Record location, date, estimated group size and the features you actually saw; a cautious note such as “possible juvenile walrus, tusks not resolved” is more useful than an overconfident species label.

For a reliable distant identification, require agreement between the head and at least one other feature: paired upper tusks plus the broad whiskered muzzle, or that facial combination plus walrus-style movement. Body bulk and Arctic setting can strengthen the case, but neither should substitute for those primary marks.
