Walmart’s AR Showroom Vision Is Bigger Than a Virtual Room

Walmart’s “augmented reality showrooms” were not a chain-wide rollout of walk-in rooms or AR headsets. The July 1, 2024 report described a portfolio of software-led experiments: virtual apparel and eyewear try-on, furniture visualization, social outfit creation, configurable 3D room scenes, associate tools and longer-term immersive-commerce plans. Walmart’s later Retina platform update and a 2025 Dynamic Showroom announcement show how that idea was moving from demonstrations toward reusable retail infrastructure—while leaving many features at beta, pilot or roadmap stage.

What Walmart meant by “augmented reality showrooms”

The phrase came from a July 1, 2024 GamesBeat/VentureBeat report based on an interview with Desirée Gosby, then Walmart Global Tech’s vice president of emerging technology. It bundled several related initiatives rather than naming one product that shoppers could find in every store.

The common thread was a digital shopping environment that helps people imagine products before buying them. A phone camera might show glasses on a face or furniture in a room; a web experience might build outfits for friends to review; an interactive 3D scene might let a shopper change furnishings and then open product pages. Walmart was extending AR from a static overlay toward visualization, configuration and social interaction.

That distinction matters. Conventional AR places digital content against the physical world. A configurable showroom can instead be an interactive 3D or immersive-commerce environment, even when it uses the same underlying assets and commerce systems. Walmart’s public descriptions also mentioned spatial computing, digital twins, virtual reality and XR, which are related but not interchangeable terms.

What shoppers could do

Experience What it was intended to do Status or qualification
Virtual apparel try-on Show clothing on a selected model or on the shopper’s own image. Walmart and the 2024 report described “Choose Your Own Model” and “Be Your Own Model”; the report said the model choice was approximately 150 at that time.
Beauty, hair and makeup visualization Preview appearance-related products digitally. Part of Walmart’s reported AR portfolio; availability can vary by product and market.
Optical Virtual Try-On Scan a face, preview frames, upload prescription information and measure pupillary distance. Walmart announced more than 750 eyewear options in January 2024, with rollout planned for Walmart.com and the app. That historical assortment should not be assumed current.
View in Your Home Place or visualize home products in a shopper’s room. Camera, device, lighting and product-asset support affect the result.
Shop with Friends Create outfits, share looks and collect reactions from friends. Announced as a beta social-commerce experience in January 2024.
Dynamic Showroom Explore designed rooms and change furnishings while shopping the items shown. The 2024 report described the concept; Walmart gave a clearer configurable-room description in October 2025.
AR paint Preview paint colors on a room surface. The 2024 report described a fall 2024 expectation, not proof of a permanent or current product.

Virtual try-on is a confidence tool, not a guarantee

Walmart’s apparel work included both model-based and self-image approaches. Its optical announcement described facial scanning, virtual frame visualization, prescription upload and pupillary-distance measurement. These tools can reduce the uncertainty of a flat product photograph, but they cannot guarantee exact fit, comfort, fabric feel, color under every light or prescription suitability. A room preview also depends on camera depth estimates, scale and the quality of the underlying 3D model.

Feature access may depend on iOS or Android support, app or browser implementation, camera permissions, geography and whether a particular item has a usable 3D asset. Current Walmart product pages and privacy terms—not the 2024 announcements—are the appropriate authority for present availability.

Dynamic Showroom versus ordinary AR

Putting one sofa into a camera view is a narrow visualization task. A Dynamic Showroom is closer to a shoppable digital room: the shopper enters a designed scene, swaps a furnishing or finish, and follows the displayed products into Walmart’s commerce flow.

The July 2024 account presented this as an emerging direction. In October 2025, Walmart described designed spaces where users could replace furnishings to match their preferences. That later description should not be read back into the July 2024 status as evidence that a broadly available showroom already existed.

How Shop with Friends added a social loop

Walmart’s CES announcement called Shop with Friends a beta AR social-commerce feature. The basic loop was:

  1. Create and mix multiple virtual outfits.
  2. Share the looks through messaging or social applications.
  3. Ask friends for feedback and receive “heart” reactions.
  4. Return to the products and continue toward purchase.

Walmart’s engineering explanation says the experience used existing virtual-try-on technology, AI and machine-learning models, Walmart commerce APIs and a web-based sharing framework. The company said people could use the shared experience without a Walmart account at that point. Because that was a beta description from 2024, it is not a current sign-up guarantee.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

The significance is behavioral: AR becomes a way to create a decision and solicit social validation, rather than merely inspect a product. That can connect inspiration, evaluation and checkout in one flow.

Retina was the scaling layer

Retina was Walmart’s internal AR platform, not simply another consumer app. In an October 2024 announcement, Walmart said Retina supported 10 AR experiences across Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club.

The platform’s strategic value is reuse:

  • Shared 3D assets can support apparel, home, optical and other experiences.
  • AI, generative AI and automation can accelerate asset production.
  • Commerce APIs connect visualization to product data, cart and checkout.
  • The same content can potentially appear on mobile, the web, games and other immersive surfaces.

Walmart’s 2024 interview comments described a mix of generative AI, procedural generation and photogrammetry for creating or scaling 3D assets. Faster generation does not eliminate quality control: dimensions, proportions, materials and visual details still need validation before a shopper should rely on them.

Walmart reported higher adoption, improved conversion and lower return rates for experiences supported by Retina. Those are company-reported results, not independently audited causal findings, so they show Walmart’s stated business case rather than a universal AR benchmark.

Why phones came before headsets

The principal customer and associate rollout described in 2024 was mobile-first. Smartphones were already in shoppers’ hands and available to many associates for navigation and product-location assistance. Walmart was also experimenting with head-mounted displays and using VR headsets for training, including active-shooter scenarios, but the report did not establish a broad deployment of AR glasses.

This is an operational choice, not a rejection of spatial computing. Equipping a very large workforce with specialized hardware adds cost, charging, support, training and durability requirements. A phone-based feature can reach existing users immediately, although it remains constrained by camera quality, screen size, permissions and the absence of hands-free interaction.

AR as part of Walmart’s “adaptive retail” strategy

Walmart’s CES material framed its broader approach as “adaptive retail,” blending online and physical commerce with AI, AR and immersive experiences. The intended journey spans several jobs:

  • Inspiration: show an outfit or room rather than a flat grid of products.
  • Evaluation: help shoppers judge likely appearance before ordering.
  • Social validation: let friends react to choices.
  • Conversion: move from visualization into Walmart’s existing purchase flow.
  • Operations: help associates locate products and navigate stores.
  • Returns: increase confidence, with any reduction treated as a reported outcome rather than a guarantee.

Digital twins fit this strategy as reusable digital representations of objects, places or systems. A digital twin is not automatically AR: it can exist in a catalog, simulation or game without being overlaid on a camera view.

Unity, games and virtual worlds

On January 4, 2024, Walmart and Unity announced plans for Unity developers to integrate Walmart commerce APIs into games, apps and real-time 3D experiences. The idea was to connect virtual activities with physical-product purchases—for example, making gardening tools available in a home-improvement game.

This was a partnership and development direction, not evidence that every Unity game could immediately sell Walmart products. It points to a wider definition of retail: a product discovery or purchase moment could occur inside a game or virtual world rather than on a conventional store page.

For Walmart, the same 3D asset and product-data infrastructure could therefore serve a phone-based room preview, a social outfit tool, a configurable showroom or an in-game commerce surface. The value lies less in a single novelty demo than in making those surfaces interoperable.

What is demonstrated, what is reported and what remains uncertain

Demonstrated or specifically described

  • Virtual apparel, beauty, hair, makeup, optical and home-visualization initiatives were part of Walmart’s 2024 portfolio.
  • Shop with Friends was described as a beta and its engineering account explained its web, AR/AI and commerce-API architecture.
  • Walmart later described Retina as supporting 10 AR experiences across Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club.
  • Walmart’s 2025 holiday announcement described configurable, shoppable room scenes under the Dynamic Showroom concept.

Still requiring caution

  • Product availability, supported devices, geographic eligibility and assortment can change.
  • The 2024 AR paint expectation was a roadmap statement.
  • Headset experimentation was not a confirmed mass workforce rollout.
  • Unity API plans did not establish universal game availability.
  • Camera-based experiences raise practical questions about facial, body and room imagery, permissions, sharing and retention; users should consult Walmart’s current privacy and feature-specific terms.

What changed after the July 2024 report?

The clearest progression was from a collection of pilots and concepts toward an internal platform strategy. By October 2024, Walmart was presenting Retina as the layer for scaling AR, AI-assisted 3D content and immersive commerce. By October 2025, Dynamic Showroom had a more concrete public description involving configurable room scenes. Those updates make the original headline easier to understand: the “showroom” was a direction for digital commerce, while Retina was the infrastructure intended to make many such experiences economical to build and operate.
