Those figures establish the potential reach of a STEAM program, but they do not prove how many students the new labs will serve or what activities each location will offer.
What a library card provides
AskWCPL says a Wake County Public Libraries card can be used at any of the system’s 20-plus libraries. Cardholders can check out physical materials, use library computers, access electronic resources, and download eBooks and audiobooks. County residents and property owners can obtain a card at no charge.

A card is therefore a sensible first step for families interested in the labs, especially if sessions use library computers or digital resources. The available information does not establish whether a card will be mandatory for every STEAM activity, whether children must be accompanied by an adult, or whether individual sessions will require advance registration.

That document is a school-system plan, not an inventory for Wake County Public Libraries. It should not be read as confirmation that any public-library branch owns those items. It does, however, show the range of tools families may encounter if the library’s eventual labs follow comparable hands-on design principles.

WUNC reported on September 15, 2026, that Wake County Public Libraries had 100 Chromebooks and mobile hotspots available for one-week checkout across 13 branches. A $398,700 North Carolina Department of Information Technology grant supported that program.

The Chromebook and hotspot lending effort demonstrates an existing focus on technology access and helps explain why digital making could be part of the library’s broader student-support work. It does not verify that those devices are assigned to STEAM labs, nor does it identify robotics, fabrication or 3D-printing services at any branch.
Questions families still need the official announcement to answer
- Which regional or community branches host a lab?
- When did each lab open, and what are its recurring hours?
- What ages or school years can participate?
- Which equipment is actually available at each location?
- Are activities drop-in, appointment-based or limited to registered programs?
- Is a library card required, and are there supply, waiver or supervision rules?
- What accessibility accommodations are available?
- Are projects connected to school assignments or offered as general enrichment?
Until those details appear in an official library notice, families should check the system’s current branch calendars and ask staff before traveling with a student or expecting a specific machine.
