A WAD file is Doom game data; a source port is the program that interprets and runs that data on a modern computer. You normally need both. The base game data is an IWAD (such as doom.wad or doom2.wad), while a mod is usually a PWAD loaded alongside it. A source port such as Chocolate Doom or GZDoom supplies the executable, rendering, input, audio and compatibility behavior; it does not automatically include the commercial game’s data.
That distinction explains most first-time problems: a port without an IWAD has no levels or original assets to run, and a PWAD without the correct IWAD or port target may fail, load partially or behave differently from its readme. The practical solution is to identify the WAD’s required base game and port, place the files where the port can find them, and follow any special instructions for total conversions.

WAD and source port are different components
Doom’s original data and its game engine are separate. The data is packaged in a file with the .wad extension; the engine is the executable supplied by a Doom source port. Treating them as interchangeable leads to incorrect downloads, missing-file errors and compatibility problems.

WAD is a container format for Doom resources. Depending on the file, it can hold maps, textures, sprites, sounds, music, status-bar graphics, scripts and other lumps that the engine reads while running. A WAD is not, by itself, a Windows, macOS or Linux application. Double-clicking one may do nothing because the operating system has no engine with which to interpret it.

The Chocolate Doom FAQ describes an IWAD as containing the game’s graphics, sound effects, levels and other game data. That is the useful mental model: the WAD supplies content, not the program that executes the game rules.
What a source port does
A source port is an engine derived from, or compatible with, the original Doom source code. It adapts the game to current operating systems and hardware while deciding which original behaviors to preserve and which modern features to add. The port handles rendering, keyboard and controller input, sound output, save games, configuration, command-line options and the rules used to interpret the WAD.
The Chocolate Doom project FAQ states, “Chocolate Doom is a source port of the game Doom, by id Software.” That description identifies software, not game ownership or included content. Installing Chocolate Doom does not generally provide doom.wad or doom2.wad.
IWAD versus PWAD: the files have different jobs
Most Doom setups involve one IWAD and zero or more PWADs. The names describe how the engine uses the files, not a different extension: both are ordinary .wad files.

Common IWAD filenames
Chocolate Doom’s setup guidance lists conventional names including doom.wad, doom2.wad, doom1.wad, tnt.wad and plutonia.wad. The exact file must match the game or episode expected by the PWAD. A Doom II map set will not become a Doom II installation merely because it is renamed; the contents and map namespace must be correct.
These files are normally obtained from a legitimate installation of the relevant game. Keep the original filename unless your selected port’s documentation says otherwise, because automatic IWAD detection often relies on recognized names.

What a PWAD changes
A PWAD can add maps, replace stock resources or alter game behavior. Some are small patches that expect the original Doom or Doom II assets to remain available. Others replace almost everything and are marketed as total conversions. A PWAD is therefore not a guarantee of independence from an IWAD: read its documentation to learn what base data, port and launch method it expects.

How the pieces work together at launch
When you start a port, it first selects an IWAD, either automatically from its configured folders or explicitly with a command-line option. The engine loads the base resources, then applies any PWADs in the order you specify. Later entries can replace earlier entries with the same resource name, so load order can affect maps, textures, sounds and scripts.
A simplified launch sequence looks like this:
- The source port executable starts.
- The port identifies an IWAD, such as
doom2.wad. - The engine builds its base resource set from that IWAD.
- Optional PWADs are loaded, commonly with a
-fileargument or a launcher equivalent. - The port applies its own compatibility rules, renderer and feature set while running the resulting data.
If step two fails, adding more PWADs cannot fix the installation. If the IWAD is correct but the port does not implement the mod’s required features, the game may start and then fail when it reaches an unsupported map, script or effect.
Choose the port from the WAD’s requirements
There is no universal “best” source port. The sensible choice depends on whether you value original behavior, modern rendering, advanced scripting or a specific mod’s target.

Use the WAD’s readme as the authority when it names a port. A modern port can often run simpler vanilla material, but “it launches” is not the same as “it runs as designed.” Conversely, a historically accurate port may reject scripts, map formats or rendering features that an enhanced mod requires.

Set up a WAD with a source port
The following workflow works for most beginners. Folder names vary by operating system and port, so use the equivalent location shown by your installation.

1. Identify the WAD’s target
- Open the download’s readme or release notes.
- Record the required IWAD: Doom, Doom II, TNT, Plutonia or a replacement such as Freedoom.
- Record the target port and any version or compatibility-level requirement.
- Look for terms such as “total conversion,” “merge,” “limit-removing,” “Boom,” “MBF” or “ZDoom,” which indicate that ordinary vanilla loading may not be enough.
2. Obtain compatible base data
Install the relevant commercial game through a legitimate source and locate its IWAD in the installed game files. Typical filenames include doom.wad, doom2.wad, doom1.wad, tnt.wad and plutonia.wad. Do not substitute a PWAD for an IWAD or assume that similarly named files contain the same maps and resources.
If you do not have commercial game data, Freedoom provides freely licensed replacement game data and documents how to run it with source ports. It is a separate game-data path, not a conversion that makes every existing Doom WAD compatible. A mod may depend on copyrighted resources or on a specific commercial IWAD even when Freedoom itself runs correctly.
3. Install and test the port alone
- Install the selected source port using its normal package or archive for your operating system.
- Place the IWAD where the port searches for game data, or use the port’s IWAD-selection control.
- Start the port without a PWAD.
- Confirm that a title screen, menu and at least one built-in episode or map load normally.
Testing the base game first separates an engine or IWAD problem from a mod problem. If the port reports that no IWAD was found, fix the filename or search path before adding any PWAD.
4. Select the IWAD explicitly when needed
Freedoom’s manual shows placing its .wad files alongside the source port or selecting one with an option such as:
-iwad freedoom1.wadThe same pattern is used by many ports, although the exact executable, path syntax and launcher fields differ. If the file is in another directory, provide the full or relative path accepted by your port. Keep the option and filename together when creating a desktop shortcut or a launch profile.
5. Add the PWAD
For a conventional add-on, pass the PWAD after selecting the IWAD. Freedoom’s manual gives an example using an additional -file WAD:

-iwad freedoom1.wad -file mymap.wadReplace the example filename with the actual file and follow the target port’s syntax. If the mod supplies several files, preserve the order in its readme. A launcher may expose the same actions through fields labeled “IWAD,” “Additional files,” “Mods” or “Command line.”
6. Verify the result in-game
- Check the episode or map name shown by the port.
- Confirm that custom textures, music and sounds appear where the readme says they should.
- Watch the console or startup log for missing lumps, unknown classes or script errors.
- Test a new game before loading an old save; saves can reference map names and actors that changed with the mod.
Why a WAD fails in GZDoom, Chocolate Doom or another port
“It does not work” can mean several different failures. Identify the symptom before changing files.
The port says no IWAD was found
- Confirm that an actual IWAD is present, not only the PWAD.
- Check the filename and spelling against the port’s recognized list.
- Place the IWAD in the configured search directory or select it with
-iwad. - Make sure the file is not still inside a ZIP archive if the port expects a loose WAD.
- Test the IWAD without any mod arguments.
The game starts but the mod’s maps are missing
- Verify that the PWAD was passed as an additional file, commonly with
-file. - Check whether the mod replaces an existing map slot or adds a new episode that must be selected from a different menu.
- Preserve the author’s load order if more than one PWAD is supplied.
- Confirm that you selected the required IWAD; a Doom II map set will not appear correctly when launched as an Ultimate Doom setup.
The port reports unknown scripts, actors or lumps
This usually indicates a feature mismatch. A vanilla-focused port may not implement an advanced scripting language, custom actor definitions or a modern map format. Conversely, a mod written for original behavior may react badly to enhancement features. Switch to the port named by the readme rather than repeatedly renaming files.
A total conversion loads only partway
Chocolate Doom’s project documentation cautions that some total conversions distributed as PWADs require merging into the main IWAD and will not work by simply adding them with -file. A merge changes the resource set so the conversion can replace the assumptions built into the base game. Use the conversion’s exact merge or launcher procedure; do not overwrite your only copy of the original IWAD. Make a backup and work on a duplicate when the instructions call for file manipulation.
The game runs, but behavior differs from the author’s screenshots or demos
Rendering mode, physics, random-number behavior, limits and compatibility settings can differ between ports. Check whether the release specifies vanilla, Boom, MBF, ZDoom or another compatibility family. Modern visual effects do not prove that gameplay compatibility is correct.

Ports can expose compatibility options that select historical engine behavior. A parameter such as -complevel is port-specific; it can choose rules associated with a particular original or extended executable. The DoomWiki parameter reference documents examples of compatibility-level and IWAD command-line usage, but the accepted values and defaults belong to the selected port.

Use a compatibility level only when the WAD’s documentation calls for one or when you are diagnosing a known behavior. Setting an arbitrary value can introduce different movement, collision, randomization or demo-sync behavior. Chocolate Doom’s purpose is already to stay close to original DOS behavior, while feature-rich ports may offer several compatibility modes alongside their enhanced defaults.
Freedoom as an alternative data path
Freedoom supplies free-software game data intended to run with Doom source ports. Its manual explains how to place the WAD files beside a port or select them with -iwad freedoom1.wad, and it gives a -file example for adding another WAD. The project also describes using a feature-rich port such as GZDoom when broader mod support is desired.
Freedoom solves the question “What base data can I legally run without the commercial IWAD?” It does not solve every compatibility question. A PWAD may rely on original textures, map names, gameplay assumptions or a commercial IWAD’s exact resource set. Check the mod’s stated requirements before substituting Freedoom.

Keep one clean copy of each IWAD and use separate folders or launcher profiles for major projects. For example, a vanilla profile can point to Chocolate Doom with an original IWAD, while an enhanced profile can point to GZDoom and a different set of mod files. This prevents a test PWAD, altered IWAD or experimental compatibility flag from affecting unrelated games.
- Use descriptive filenames for PWADs, but do not rename IWADs unless the port documentation allows it.
- Store the readme with the mod so its required port and load order remain available.
- Keep backups before merging or patching any base file.
- Remove duplicate versions of the same PWAD from automatic mod folders; a launcher may load the wrong copy.
- When reporting a problem, include the port name, version, IWAD filename, PWAD filename, launch command and exact error text.
A quick decision checklist
- What do you have? Identify whether each file is an IWAD, a conventional PWAD or a total conversion.
- What does it require? Read the mod’s target-port, IWAD and compatibility instructions.
- Is the base game working? Launch the port with only the IWAD before adding anything else.
- Are you loading the add-on correctly? Use the port’s additional-file control or the documented
-filesyntax. - Does the mod need a merge? Follow total-conversion instructions instead of assuming ordinary PWAD loading.
- Is the behavior intentional? Check compatibility-level settings and whether the chosen port preserves original DOS quirks.
The central rule is simple: the WAD supplies the game data and the source port supplies the engine. Once you identify the required IWAD, select a port that matches the WAD’s compatibility target, and use the documented launch or merge method, most “missing WAD” and “won’t run” problems become specific configuration issues rather than mysteries.
