Vultr VPS or Cloud Compute for a 24/7 YouTube Channel: Which Should You Choose?

By Freedom251 Team · · 7 min read

For a simple, low-resource 24/7 YouTube stream, start by evaluating Vultr’s shared-CPU Cloud Compute plans against your encoder’s measured CPU use and the plan’s outbound bandwidth allowance. Choose dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute when sustained encoding or complex scenes create CPU pressure and you need more predictable compute resources. There is no universal Vultr instance size that suits every stream: test the actual workload and check current pricing and availability in your chosen location before committing.

If you would rather not operate a VPS or keep an encoder running yourself, StreamNeo is the first cloud alternative to consider: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube, runs without a computer at home, and offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot.

What “Vultr VPS” means in this comparison

“VPS” is a general term for a virtual private server. In Vultr’s product lineup, the relevant general category is Cloud Compute, which uses shared CPU resources. Optimized Cloud Compute is a separate category with dedicated CPUs. So the practical comparison is shared CPU versus dedicated CPU—not two names for the same Vultr plan.

Vultr’s Cloud Compute plans also differ in processor and storage characteristics. Its standard Cloud Compute uses previous-generation Intel CPUs and regular SSD storage; High Frequency emphasizes higher clock speeds and NVMe storage; High Performance uses newer Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe. Check which plans are available in your selected region and compare their current specifications and prices before choosing.

Shared CPU vs. dedicated CPU: how to choose

Decision factor Shared CPU Cloud Compute Dedicated CPU Optimized Cloud Compute
CPU resources Shared virtual CPU resources; positioned for general applications and workloads. Dedicated virtual CPUs, intended to provide more consistent and predictable compute performance.
When to evaluate it A static feed or low-complexity scene that passes a real stream test within CPU and transfer limits. Sustained encoding, complex scenes, or measured CPU pressure where more predictable CPU resources matter.
How to select a plan Compare vCPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, tier, region, and current price. Choose General Purpose or a workload-specific CPU, memory, or storage ratio based on your measured bottleneck.
Main cost check Plan price, included outbound transfer, and possible bandwidth overage. Compute-tier price, included outbound transfer, possible overage, and any additional services.
What the plan category does not establish It does not identify a universal plan for a 24/7 YouTube encoder. Dedicated CPU does not guarantee a particular encode resolution or uninterrupted streaming.

Vultr offers Optimized Cloud Compute in General Purpose, CPU Optimized, Memory Optimized, and Storage Optimized families. For an OBS encoder, CPU is often the relevant bottleneck to investigate, but use measurements from your actual content and settings rather than assuming a particular family or size will be sufficient.

Can you run OBS on a Vultr VPS?

Vultr publishes an OBS-on-Ubuntu streaming guide and a separate OBS-based Broadcaster Marketplace guide. These support using OBS in a Vultr-hosted environment, but do not establish one minimum instance size for all resolutions, frame rates, codecs, scenes, or audio setups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At a high level, the self-managed route is to provision an Ubuntu instance, install and configure OBS, add the content sources and YouTube stream destination, start the broadcast, and verify that the channel is receiving it. Vultr’s tutorial describes using an Ubuntu desktop, configuring OBS sources, starting the stream, checking the channel, and ensuring OBS stays active after disconnecting from the desktop. Use the current Vultr instructions for the exact installation and interface steps; the appropriate steps can vary with the chosen image and deployment method.

Provision and test before relying on it

  1. Choose a location and plan. Vultr allows provisioning through its Console, API, CLI, or Terraform. Select the location, CPU category, plan, and image; decide whether you need optional settings such as a startup script, firewall group, backups, or VPC connectivity.
  2. Set up the encoder. Follow Vultr’s current OBS-on-Ubuntu guidance for the environment you provisioned. Configure the actual sources, scenes, audio, and YouTube destination you intend to use.
  3. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and codec, so use the matching reference below rather than assuming all encoders should use the same value.
  4. Test representative content. Run a test with the motion and audio your channel will actually use. Watch CPU use in OBS and check YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test is live.
  5. Confirm persistence and recovery. Verify that OBS remains active after you disconnect from the desktop. Decide how you will detect and restore the process after a server or network interruption; the cited Vultr guidance does not establish a particular uptime guarantee or SLA for your plan.

Which YouTube settings affect the server and stream?

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these reference bitrates:

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate YouTube AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, not Vultr instance requirements. For other output settings, consult YouTube’s current encoder table. YouTube also advises testing and monitoring stream health; settings that meet a bitrate recommendation still need to work reliably with your content and delivery path.

Vultr’s OBS tutorial advises lowering output resolution or upgrading to a plan with more vCPUs if CPU usage is high. That is a useful diagnostic direction, not a guarantee that an upgrade will solve every issue. First establish whether the constraint is encoding load, the network path, or another part of the setup.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?

For a stream sent from a VPS to YouTube, outbound transfer is the important direction. Vultr counts outbound data toward the plan’s bandwidth allowance and does not meter inbound transfer. Its support page, updated December 16, 2025, documents a $0.01-per-GB overage rate after the included quota; verify the current allowance and policy for your plan before calculating the total cost.

A rough 30-day estimate can be made from bitrate alone using bitrate in megabits per second × seconds in the month ÷ 8, then converting megabytes to gigabytes. Using decimal units and ignoring overhead, a constant 3 Mbps stream is about 972 GB in 30 days; 5 Mbps is about 1,620 GB; and 6 Mbps is about 1,944 GB. These are planning estimates, not measured usage or a guaranteed bill. Audio, protocol overhead, and actual streaming behavior can change the total, so leave headroom and compare the estimate with the selected plan’s current included outbound transfer.

YouTube recommends leaving network headroom and testing the actual upload path. A VPS uses a different path from a home connection, but nominal bandwidth alone does not prove the stream will remain healthy. Validate delivery under the real workload and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.

What can go wrong, and what should you check?

  • OBS reports high CPU use or the stream struggles while encoding: check whether the scene and output settings create sustained load. Vultr’s tutorial suggests reducing output resolution or moving to a plan with more vCPUs; test again after changing either.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: check the encoder settings against YouTube’s recommendations, confirm the bitrate and keyframe interval, and test the actual delivery path with representative content. Leave network headroom.
  • The stream stops after you disconnect: confirm OBS remains active after the desktop session ends. Include process recovery after a server or network interruption in your operating plan.
  • The bandwidth estimate exceeds the allowance: recalculate from the actual bitrate and expected duration, include headroom, and check the plan’s current outbound quota and overage policy before committing.
  • You need a complete archive of a continuous broadcast: do not assume YouTube will create one uninterrupted archive for a 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current archiving behavior and arrange separate recording or archiving if preserving the full output matters.

Should you use Vultr or a managed cloud loop?

Vultr is the self-managed choice when you want to run OBS on a server and are prepared to select, configure, monitor, and recover the environment. Its shared-CPU plans are worth evaluating first for a simple stream; consider dedicated CPU if real tests show sustained CPU pressure or if a complex scene needs more predictable resources. In either case, check the location-specific plan price and included outbound transfer, then test your exact workload. The available guidance does not establish a universal server size or promise uninterrupted service.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is #1 as a managed way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
