Join an agency if you need coordinated production, launch promotion, brand-deal access, events or a collaborative roster and are prepared to trade some control for those resources. Stay independent if owning your character and channel, setting your schedule, choosing partners and keeping business decisions are more important—and you can manage or pay for the work an agency would otherwise provide.
Neither path guarantees income. Your result depends on the contract, audience fit, consistency, costs and business execution. Compare ownership, economics, control, support, exit risk and growth model before deciding.

What the two paths actually mean
Independent creator
An independent VTuber owns or controls the operation directly. You choose the character concept, modelers, rigger, software, collaborators, schedule, content policy, sponsors and monetization mix. You can still hire specialists or sign non-exclusive service agreements; independence does not require doing every task yourself.
The trade-off is responsibility. Modeling and rigging, audio, editing, moderation, legal and accounting work, marketing, sales, technical troubleshooting and event production either come from your own time or your budget. You also carry the downside when a launch, sponsorship or product does not perform.

Agency talent
An agency is a company relationship governed by a contract. It may fund or coordinate a model, production staff, promotion, sales, merchandise, events, legal support and collaborations with other talent. In return, you accept company rules and the contract’s terms for revenue, intellectual property, exclusivity, schedule, conduct and termination.
Some agencies operate partly like a creator network. YouTube describes a multichannel network (MCN) as a third-party provider that may offer audience development, content programming, creator collaborations, digital-rights management, monetization and sales. A VTuber agency can add services and obligations beyond a conventional MCN, including character ownership, production approvals and employment-style rules.
Quick decision: which path fits your priorities?
| If your priority is… | Usually the better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Owning the character, name and channel | Independent | You make the ownership arrangements directly and avoid transferring rights unless you choose to. |
| Professional launch production without building a team | Agency | An agency may coordinate modeling, rigging, creative production and promotion. |
| Control over schedule, collaborators and public statements | Independent | You set the operating rules, subject to platform policies and your own agreements. |
| Brand deals, merchandise and live events | Agency, if the contract is favorable | Sales, licensing and event infrastructure can be difficult to build alone. |
| Experimenting quickly with formats or branding | Independent | You do not need internal approvals for each change. |
| Shared promotion and roster collaborations | Agency | A roster can create cross-promotion and coordinated launches, but it also introduces brand rules and scheduling constraints. |
| Keeping all available revenue after expenses | Independent, in principle | You avoid an agency percentage, but you pay every operating cost yourself. |
| Lower personal operational workload | Agency | Staff may handle or coordinate tasks, although your contract may still require minimum activity and approvals. |
Treat the table as a screening tool, not a promise. An agency’s actual services, split and ownership terms can differ substantially from another’s.

Ownership: the question that determines your long-term leverage
Ask who owns each asset, not merely who paid for it. Put the answer in writing for the avatar and model files, character name, likeness, channel and social accounts, music, logos, merchandise designs, streams and edited videos, mailing lists and fan-community spaces.
Questions for an agency contract
- Does the company own the character and likeness outright, or do you receive a license?
- Can you continue using the model, name and back catalog after termination?
- Who controls the YouTube, Twitch, social and community accounts, and who holds the recovery credentials?
- Must you disclose existing channels or suspend them?
- Who owns commissioned music, thumbnails, scripts, 3D assets and merchandise artwork?
- Can the agency reuse your likeness in compilations, advertising, games or other media?
- What happens to fan memberships, paid communities, mailing lists and customer data when you leave?
If the company owns the character and channel, leaving can mean losing the identity your audience recognizes. That may be an acceptable exchange for substantial investment, but it should never be an accidental result of vague wording.

Independent ownership is not automatic
Independence gives you negotiating control, but freelancers may retain rights unless your contracts assign them. Obtain written assignments or licenses for models, rigs, music, artwork and commissioned software, and keep invoices and source files. Confirm whether a creator may use the asset commercially, modify it, sublicense it for merchandise and continue using it if a contractor relationship ends.
Economics: compare take-home money, not headline revenue
Both paths can use platform advertisements, memberships, donations, sponsorships, merchandise, music, events and licensing. The money reaches you through several layers: platform deductions, refunds or chargebacks, taxes, production expenses and—if applicable—an agency share.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlatform deductions come first
Twitch’s Monetized Streamer Agreement defines “Net Revenue” as money Twitch actually receives after platform and advertising costs, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, discounts, currency-exchange fees and bank or transaction fees. It also states that Twitch and the creator remain independent contractors. An agency percentage, if any, is an additional contractual layer; do not assume it replaces platform deductions.
YouTube says MCNs typically take a percentage from the creator’s portion before paying the creator, and joining an MCN does not change YouTube’s own revenue share. The exact result depends on the agreement’s definition of gross or net revenue and its permitted deductions.
Build a channel-by-channel money map
| Revenue stream | Independent creator should verify | Agency creator should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ads and memberships | Platform share, taxes, payment timing and your own production costs | All independent-column items plus the agency percentage and whether it is calculated before or after platform deductions |
| Donations and tips | Processor fees, refunds, chargebacks and tax reporting | Who receives the funds, whether the agency can deduct processing or administrative costs, and reporting frequency |
| Sponsorships | Your sales commission, fulfillment costs, usage rights and exclusivity | Who negotiates, who approves the sponsor, commission or split, campaign expenses and payment delays |
| Merchandise | Manufacturing, storage, shipping, returns, storefront fees and design ownership | Royalty base, recoupment of setup costs, inventory liability and ownership of designs and customer data |
| Music, events and licensing | Rights clearance, venue or distributor costs and your share of net receipts | Who funds production, what costs are recouped, territory and term of licenses, and your accounting rights |
Use a written example before signing
Ask the company to show a sample statement using your likely revenue categories. It should show gross receipts, every platform and transaction deduction, taxes or withholding, recoupable expenses, the agency percentage, the period covered and the final amount payable to you. A single “net” figure without a formula is not enough.

Cover Corporation’s FY2022/3 investor presentation reported ¥13.6 billion in revenue, 71 hololive production VTubers, 31 channels with more than one million subscribers and a calculated company metric of ¥200 million yearly revenue per VTuber. The presentation also described revenue from streaming, concerts and events, merchandising and licensing, plus investment in 3D modeling, 3D animation, motion-capture studios and live concerts. These figures describe one agency-scale business and its company-level metrics; they are not a forecast for an individual applicant or for every agency.
Support and workload: what an agency may actually remove from your plate
List the work you perform in a normal month and mark whether an agency promises to do it, coordinate it or merely make it available. “Support” is meaningful only when the contract states scope, response times, budget and approval authority.
Production and technology
- 2D or 3D modeling, rigging, revisions and replacement assets
- Motion capture, studio access and live-event technical production
- Audio setup, recording, editing, thumbnails and clips
- Stream setup, troubleshooting and security procedures
Business and audience work
- Launch marketing, public relations and cross-promotion
- Brand-deal sales, negotiation, invoicing and rights clearance
- Merchandise design, manufacturing, storefront operations and support
- Legal, accounting, scheduling and moderation assistance
Ask whether each item is included, capped, charged back, optional, subject to approval or performed by an outside vendor. An agency can provide access without guaranteeing a minimum number of campaigns, appearances, uploads or sales.
Control, rules and day-to-day creative freedom
Independent creators decide their own content and business direction, within platform rules and any agreements they sign. An agency may require content approvals, a minimum activity level, schedule coordination, sponsorship approvals, brand-safe conduct, confidentiality and rules for public statements or collaborations.
Questions to clarify
- Who approves scripts, thumbnails, streams, sponsorships and merchandise?
- Can you collaborate with non-roster creators or appear on another channel?
- Are there blackout dates, minimum streams, attendance requirements or response-time expectations?
- Who controls announcements about breaks, health, disputes and account security incidents?
- What conduct standard applies off-stream, and how is an alleged breach investigated?
- Can the company change branding, model design or platform strategy without your consent?
These terms matter as much as the revenue split. A higher percentage can be worthwhile if the company funds production and sales you could not otherwise obtain; strict rules can be unacceptable if your work depends on experimentation or irregular availability.

Growth: solo experimentation versus roster scale
Independent growth model
You can test a niche, rename a series, change platforms, choose collaborators and reinvest revenue without waiting for internal approval. Growth may be slower when you must arrange every production and promotion task, and a single person has limited time for sales, editing and community care.
Agency growth model
An agency can coordinate a launch, place talent in shared promotions, sell merchandise and licensing, and invest in studios or events. Roster visibility is not guaranteed: audience development depends on programming, audience fit and sustained output. A 2025 academic preprint analyzing more than one million hours of public streams from 1,923 VTubers found substantial income inequality in livestreaming outcomes, so neither agency affiliation nor independence automatically predicts earnings.
Risk, contract length and the exit plan
YouTube advises that MCN contracts are legally binding and recommends reviewing fees, services, obligations, duration and termination. The same discipline applies to a VTuber agency agreement, especially where character IP and channel access are involved.
Exit clauses to inspect
- Initial term, renewal mechanism and notice deadlines
- Termination for convenience, cause, inactivity, illness or force majeure
- Notice period and duties during that period
- Post-exit restrictions on names, likeness, collaborations, sponsors and competing activity
- Archival access to streams, clips, source files, analytics and financial records
- Unpaid balances, pending sponsorships, merchandise inventory and customer support
- Dispute-resolution process, governing law and forum
- Confidentiality and whether it survives termination
Request the complete contract and every schedule, policy and revenue appendix before signing. Have an entertainment or technology lawyer in your jurisdiction explain ownership, exclusivity, termination and dispute clauses. Do not rely on a verbal promise that conflicts with the written agreement.
A practical decision process
- Write your non-negotiables. State who must own the character, channel and likeness; how much schedule control you need; and which collaborations or platforms must remain available.
- Inventory your current capacity. Record your monthly budget, available hours and skills in modeling, rigging, audio, editing, moderation, marketing, sales, legal and accounting.
- Price the independent version. Obtain quotes or written scopes for the services you would outsource. Include recurring costs, not only the initial model.
- Request agency specifics. Ask for the full agreement, service list, production budget, expected activity, revenue formula, payment schedule and examples of exit treatment.
- Normalize the economics. Compare the same revenue streams after platform deductions, taxes, production expenses, agency percentages and chargebacks. Separate guaranteed services from optional opportunities.
- Test operational fit. Ask who your day-to-day contact is, how approvals work, how emergencies are handled and how quickly accounting questions are answered.
- Review the downside. Model a quiet quarter, a disputed sponsorship, a missed activity target and an early termination. Identify who bears each cost and who keeps each asset.
- Get independent legal advice. Sign only after you understand the rights you give up and the rights you retain.
When a hybrid approach makes sense
You can remain independent while hiring a modeler, rigger, editor, moderator, accountant, publicist or rights specialist for defined projects. Non-exclusive service agreements preserve the ability to choose collaborators and platforms while reducing workload. You can also negotiate a limited sponsorship or licensing arrangement instead of transferring the entire character and channel.

A hybrid plan works best when each agreement states deliverables, deadlines, revision limits, ownership or license scope, confidentiality, payment milestones and what happens to source files if the relationship ends. It does not provide the roster effects or centralized investment of a full agency, but it can reveal which support you actually need before accepting broad restrictions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing on subscriber counts alone
A large roster or impressive channels does not establish your likely placement, support level or take-home pay. Ask what resources are allocated to new talent and how performance is measured.
Comparing a headline split to gross revenue
Use the written definition of gross, net and deductible expenses. Include platform deductions and chargebacks before comparing offers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming paid production means transferable ownership
Payment and ownership are separate questions. Confirm whether you receive an assignment, a perpetual license, a term-limited license or no continuing right.
Ignoring account access
Document who controls logins, recovery email, two-factor authentication, channel permissions and analytics. An exit plan that omits credentials is incomplete.
Signing under launch pressure
Take time to review schedules and consult counsel. YouTube’s guidance that MCN contracts are legally binding is a useful warning for any agency deal.
Bottom line: choose the risk and workload you can sustain
Choose independence when control and asset ownership outweigh the convenience of centralized support, and you can fund or manage the required work. Choose an agency when its concrete investment in production, promotion, sales, events or collaboration solves a problem you cannot reasonably solve alone—and when the contract gives you acceptable economics, rights and an exit.
