VSCodium is a community-built, MIT-licensed build that disables several telemetry-related settings by default and uses Open VSX for extensions. Microsoft Visual Studio Code is Microsoft’s licensed distribution, with Microsoft-specific customizations and direct Visual Studio Marketplace integration.
The practical choice depends on three checks: whether your required extensions are available and licensed for the editor, whether you need Microsoft-specific integrations, and how much control you want over telemetry and other online services. Neither editor should be treated as completely offline, and an editor-level telemetry setting cannot guarantee that extensions send no data.

What’s the difference between VSCodium and Visual Studio Code?
Both editors are built from the public vscode repository, known as Code – OSS. Microsoft makes that source available under the MIT license, then distributes Visual Studio Code with a separate Microsoft product license, proprietary assets, and Microsoft-operated services such as its extension marketplace. VSCodium takes the same general source lineage and publishes community-built binaries using its own build scripts.

|---|---|---|
| Editor distribution | Community-built binaries derived from Code – OSS; VSCodium describes the binaries as MIT-licensed. | Microsoft distribution of Code – OSS with Microsoft-specific customizations and a Microsoft product license. |
| Default extension gallery | Open VSX. | Visual Studio Marketplace. |
| Telemetry defaults | Several telemetry-related settings are disabled by default. | Telemetry levels are configurable, including off. |
| Microsoft-specific integrations | Some Microsoft extensions and debugging tools may be unavailable, restricted, or hard-coded to require the official build. | Designed for Microsoft’s supported Visual Studio product family and Marketplace integrations. |
| Extension licensing | Each extension keeps its own license and terms; editor licensing does not change them. | Each extension keeps its own license and terms; Microsoft Marketplace terms also apply. |
The shared source means many editor concepts and workflows are familiar in both products. It does not mean that every service, extension, update channel, or proprietary integration behaves identically.

What is shared, and what is distribution-specific?
Code editing, settings, keyboard shortcuts, project folders, source-control interfaces, language-server protocols, terminals, and many standard extension APIs come from the common Code – OSS foundation. That commonality explains why a developer can often move a workspace or settings file between the two editors with limited adjustment.
Distribution-specific pieces sit around that foundation: the binary build, branding and product identifier, default service endpoints, extension gallery, update and announcement services, licensing terms, and proprietary integrations. An extension that uses only documented APIs may work in both products, while one that checks the product identifier or calls a Microsoft-only service may not. Treat “based on the same source” as a compatibility clue, not a guarantee.
Does VSCodium have telemetry?
VSCodium disables multiple telemetry-related settings by default. Its documentation says the build scripts do not pass Microsoft’s telemetry build flags and that settings including telemetry.telemetryLevel and workbench.enableExperiments are disabled by default. This reduces editor-level collection and experimentation, but it does not make every network connection disappear.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How Visual Studio Code’s telemetry levels work
Visual Studio Code exposes a telemetry level through telemetry.telemetryLevel. Microsoft’s enterprise documentation distinguishes the categories this way:
| Setting | What it includes |
|---|---|
all |
Crash reports, error telemetry, and usage data. |
error |
Crash reports and error telemetry. |
crash |
Crash reports only. |
off |
Disables those three editor telemetry categories. |
Setting the level to off or error also disables A/B experimentation. As a result, features controlled by experiments may not appear until they are released generally. That is a rollout trade-off, not evidence that the editor is malfunctioning.
How to set the editor-level setting
- Open the Command Palette and choose Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON).
- Add or change the setting
"telemetry.telemetryLevel": "off". - Save the file and restart the editor if a prompt appears.
- Review other online-service settings rather than assuming the telemetry value covers them.
The same JSON setting can be reviewed in VSCodium, although VSCodium already turns its listed telemetry settings off by default. Confirm the effective value in the running build, especially after importing a settings file or applying an organization policy.
Why “telemetry off” does not mean “offline”
Telemetry is only one class of network activity. VSCodium points users to Settings search with @tag:usesOnlineServices so they can inspect services that may contact the network. Update checks, extension checks, project announcements, Open VSX requests, and an extension’s own service can each be separate connections. Microsoft likewise documents update, extension, settings-search, and other online services independently from telemetry.
Some online services are useful rather than diagnostic: an extension gallery must fetch metadata, an update service checks for newer binaries, and account-backed tools may contact a cloud endpoint. Decide which of those services your policy permits instead of treating all traffic as one switch. If your requirement is a genuinely isolated workstation, treat the editor setting as one control in a broader network policy. Review proxy and firewall rules, disable services you do not need, and inspect the behavior and documentation of every installed extension.
Can extensions change the privacy picture?
Yes. Microsoft states that extensions can collect usage data independently and that some third-party extensions may not respect the editor’s global telemetry level. VSCodium makes the same warning: an extension can send telemetry and the VSCodium project cannot control that behavior.

Extension privacy checklist
- Read the extension publisher’s privacy policy and telemetry documentation.
- Inspect extension-specific settings for analytics, diagnostics, crash reporting, or usage sharing.
- Check whether the extension requires an account or a cloud service.
- Identify where data is sent and whether source code, file names, prompts, or diagnostics leave the machine.
- Recheck these details after major extension updates; editor settings do not override a publisher’s own implementation.
This distinction applies equally to both distributions. VSCodium’s quieter defaults can reduce built-in collection, but they cannot guarantee privacy for code intelligence, language servers, formatters, synchronisation tools, or other add-ons.
Does VSCodium use the Visual Studio Marketplace?
No. VSCodium uses Open VSX as its default gallery, while Microsoft Visual Studio Code integrates the Visual Studio Marketplace. The catalogs overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

What the gallery difference means in practice
| Question | VSCodium and Open VSX | Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio Marketplace |
|---|---|---|
| Can you search and install directly? | Yes, through the Open VSX-backed gallery configured for VSCodium. | Yes, through Microsoft’s integrated Marketplace. |
| Will every familiar extension appear? | No. VSCodium warns that some extensions known from the Marketplace may be missing. | Marketplace listings are available inside Microsoft’s distribution, subject to their product terms. |
| Are publisher, version, and license details identical? | Not necessarily. Verify the listing and release source. | Verify the Marketplace listing and its license and terms. |
| Are compatibility and updates guaranteed across builds? | No. A listing can be absent or can behave differently in a forked build. | No blanket guarantee applies to every third-party extension, even in the official editor. |
Can I use my VS Code extensions in VSCodium?
Often, but not universally. Extensions that rely only on standard editor APIs may work, while an extension can also be absent from Open VSX, require the official product identifier, depend on a proprietary component, or make assumptions that do not hold in a forked build. Compatibility is an extension-by-extension question.
Before switching, record the exact extension name, publisher, version, license, update source, and any required account or service. Search Open VSX for that specific item rather than assuming a similarly named listing is the same project. Then test the commands, language features, authentication flow, and generated output that your work actually depends on.
What if an extension is missing?
VSCodium documents two possible paths: ask the maintainer to publish the extension on Open VSX, or obtain a VSIX from the extension’s legitimate release source. A VSIX install does not remove the need to evaluate trust, provenance, update responsibility, and license terms. Do not treat an unofficial mirror as equivalent to a publisher-controlled release.
Some Microsoft extensions, debugging tools, or other integrations are proprietary or restricted to official Visual Studio Code builds. If an extension refuses to activate, reports that it requires the official product, or loses a feature after installation, that restriction may be intentional rather than a configuration error.

What are the Marketplace licensing and terms differences?
Licensing operates at several layers. The Code – OSS source is MIT-licensed. VSCodium describes its resulting binaries as MIT-licensed builds. Microsoft describes Visual Studio Code as a Microsoft-licensed distribution of that MIT-licensed source with additional proprietary customizations.
Those editor licenses do not determine an extension’s license. Each extension can impose its own copyright, use, redistribution, account, or service terms. Read the extension’s license and privacy information separately from the editor’s license. An MIT-licensed editor does not make a separately licensed extension MIT-licensed, and installing an extension does not transfer ownership of its code.
Microsoft’s Marketplace FAQ says the Marketplace is provided for Visual Studio Products and Services and that alternative products built on Code – OSS forks are not permitted to access it. Microsoft also says extensions it publishes through the Marketplace are not licensed for use outside its enumerated product family. Consequently, replacing a gallery endpoint or copying Marketplace packages into a fork can create terms and support issues. Choose an editor and extension combination that the publisher explicitly supports instead of relying on an unapproved workaround.

Which editor has the features I need?
There is no universal feature winner because the important differences are concentrated in distribution services, extension availability, and Microsoft-specific components rather than in the shared editor foundation.
Choose VSCodium when these priorities dominate
- You want telemetry-related settings disabled by default instead of changing the defaults yourself.
- Your required extensions are available on Open VSX or from a publisher-controlled VSIX source whose terms you accept.
- You prefer an MIT-licensed editor distribution and do not depend on Microsoft-only integrations.
- You are prepared to audit online-service settings and extension behavior independently.
Choose Visual Studio Code when these priorities dominate
- Your workflow depends on an extension that is published only through the Visual Studio Marketplace.
- You need a Microsoft extension, debugger, or integration that requires the official product build.
- You want Microsoft’s supported distribution and its integrated Marketplace experience.
- You accept the Microsoft product license and are comfortable configuring telemetry and online-service settings to your policy.
When neither choice is automatically sufficient
A strict privacy or offline requirement still requires network controls and extension review in either editor. A large extension estate still requires compatibility testing, because no catalog guarantees that every extension will work across distributions. A licensing-sensitive organization must review the editor license, each extension license, and Marketplace terms rather than selecting solely on the basis of the word “open source.”
How to evaluate a switch without breaking your workflow
- Inventory your dependencies. Export a list of every extension, including publisher, version, license, required account, network service, and the commands or files your team relies on.
- Classify must-haves. Separate essential language support, debugging, deployment, authentication, and collaboration tools from conveniences that can be replaced.
- Check the target gallery. For VSCodium, search Open VSX for each exact extension. For Visual Studio Code, confirm the Marketplace listing, publisher identity, license, and supported product family.
- Investigate restricted integrations. Read the publisher’s compatibility statement for extensions that mention Microsoft services, proprietary debugging, remote features, or a required product identifier.
- Verify an approved installation source. If an item is absent, look for an official Open VSX publication or a publisher-controlled VSIX release. Record how updates will arrive and who will verify them.
- Apply privacy settings. Set the editor telemetry level required by your policy, then inspect
@tag:usesOnlineServicesand each extension’s own settings. - Run representative tasks. Open a real project and test editing, language analysis, build and test commands, debugging, authentication, formatting, source control integrations, and any cloud service your team uses.
- Document the result. Record extensions that passed, failed, or need a substitute. Keep the original installation available until the replacement workflow is reproducible.
For teams, perform this evaluation on a disposable profile or test machine first. Capture the editor version, extension versions, settings policy, and service endpoints so another developer can reproduce the result. A successful installation is not enough: verify that updates, sign-in, debugging, and failure recovery work under the same restrictions as production machines.

The extension cannot be found
Confirm the exact publisher and identifier, then search the other gallery or the publisher’s official release page. A missing Open VSX listing does not prove that the extension is unavailable everywhere, but it does mean you must evaluate another source and its update process.
The extension installs but does not activate
Read its activation error and compatibility notes. A hard-coded requirement for the official Visual Studio Code product, a proprietary dependency, or an unsupported API can prevent activation in VSCodium. Installing the same package repeatedly will not remove that product restriction.

Compare the extension version, settings, service endpoint, and authentication state. Gallery listings can carry different release timing, and an extension can enable experiments or online services of its own. Test with the same project and document the exact version before changing other variables.
Telemetry still appears after changing the editor setting
Check the effective value of telemetry.telemetryLevel, organization policies, and extension-specific controls. Then inspect online-service settings separately. The global editor value covers the documented editor telemetry categories; it does not silence every extension or every update and marketplace request.
How should teams make the final decision?
Use a requirement-first decision rather than a reputation-based one. Start with the extensions and integrations that cannot be replaced, verify their terms and compatibility in the target distribution, and only then weigh default telemetry behavior and licensing preferences.
For a team with no Microsoft-only dependency, VSCodium’s defaults may reduce configuration work for a privacy-oriented policy. For a team built around Marketplace-only extensions or official Microsoft integrations, Visual Studio Code may avoid unsupported substitutions. In both cases, keep an inventory of online services and extension telemetry because the editor choice alone cannot answer the privacy question.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is VSCodium completely telemetry-free?
No. VSCodium disables listed editor telemetry settings by default, but extensions, update checks, galleries, announcements, and other online services can still make network connections. Review each service and extension separately.
Can I install every Visual Studio Code extension in VSCodium?
No. Many standard extensions work, but some are missing from Open VSX, require the official product identifier, depend on proprietary components, or are restricted to Microsoft’s build. Check each extension’s publisher, license, and compatibility notes.
Can I use the Visual Studio Marketplace in VSCodium?
VSCodium uses Open VSX by default. Microsoft states that its Marketplace is for Visual Studio Products and Services and does not permit alternative Code – OSS products to access it, so use an approved Open VSX listing or publisher-controlled VSIX instead.
Does turning telemetry off disable A/B experiments in Visual Studio Code?
Yes. Microsoft documents that the off and error levels disable A/B experimentation, so experiment-controlled features may wait until general release.
Which license applies to an extension installed in either editor?
The extension’s own license applies independently of the editor license. Code – OSS is MIT-licensed, VSCodium describes its binaries as MIT-licensed, and Microsoft distributes VS Code under its product license; none of those changes an extension’s terms.
Which editor is better for a privacy-sensitive team?
VSCodium provides quieter telemetry defaults, while VS Code offers configurable telemetry levels including off. The deciding work is still extension review, online-service controls, firewall policy, and compatibility testing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose VSCodium for its telemetry-related defaults and MIT-licensed distribution when your extensions are available through Open VSX or an approved source. Choose Visual Studio Code when Marketplace availability, Microsoft-specific extensions, debugging tools, or supported integrations are essential. In either editor, audit extension telemetry, online services, and licensing one dependency at a time.
