sess, accept the prompt and allow it to finish.
On Windows, the maintainers recommend letting the R installer write the R path to the registry so the extension can locate the R installation.

Do I need to install sess separately?
No separate manual installation is normally needed. The extension includes sess and prompts you to install or update it when necessary. Accepting that prompt is the documented quick-start path. If the prompt does not appear, do not assume you must independently install a package; first confirm the extension is installed and that VS Code can find R.
What can the extension do beyond the v3.0.0 change?

The basic setup is R, languageserver, and the R extension. Other tools are optional enhancements, or prerequisites only for a particular feature.

The README recommends jgd and httpgd as interactive plotting backends, but that does not make either one a prerequisite for every use of the R extension. Install a companion tool only when you want the workflow or feature it enables.
Should I use the stable release or the development pre-release?
Use the stable Marketplace or Open VSX release for ordinary installation and updates. The project also documents a development pre-release distributed as a GitHub release asset; it is rebuilt from pushes to the project’s main branch. That makes it a separate, development-oriented option rather than the default update path. Consult the project README for its current installation instructions.

Does the VS Code R extension replace RStudio?
The project’s Getting Started page, last modified December 15, 2021, says the extension is not intended as a full drop-in replacement for RStudio. It presents VS Code as a configurable way to write R and work interactively with sessions, with potential value for people combining languages or using remote servers, containers, self-managed sessions, or multiple sessions.
