The estimate is straightforward: multiply the stream’s configured bitrate by its running time, then compare the result with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage terms. At 12 Mbps for a full 30-day month, one output uses about 3.89 decimal TB, before small transport overhead.
Estimate monthly bandwidth from your stream bitrate
For one continuous output, the approximate decimal terabytes sent in a 30-day month are:
Monthly TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000
For a quick estimate, multiply Mbps by 0.000324. This is arithmetic, not a measured result: it assumes a constant bitrate for all 30 days and excludes small transport overhead, restarts, and downtime. “TB” here means decimal terabytes; provider dashboards may instead display binary tebibytes (TiB).

Use the bitrate configured in your encoder, not resolution alone. A stream’s resolution and frame rate help determine an appropriate bitrate, but two streams at the same resolution can use different bitrates and therefore consume different amounts of data.

The monthly values in the table are calculated from the range endpoints using the constant-bitrate, 30-day assumption above; they are not measured usage. YouTube’s guidance also covers AV1 and H.265, whose appropriate settings differ. Check the current YouTube guidance and your encoder configuration when planning a stream. YouTube recommends CBR, RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval above four seconds.
Count outputs, not viewers
The calculation covers one outbound feed from the VPS to one destination. If the VPS sends separate copies to multiple destinations, estimate each output; the total depends on how the streaming setup sends those feeds. Do not multiply VPS egress by your audience size when the VPS sends one feed to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for viewers: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.”

How VPS bandwidth becomes a bill
There is no universal per-terabyte VPS price. Your charge depends on the plan’s included outbound transfer, any account-level transfer grant, overage rate and billing increments, region, and the provider’s traffic-counting rules. Check the plan terms rather than multiplying total stream usage by an overage rate before subtracting allowances or checking other conditions.
Read the transfer allowance and overage terms
As a dated provider-published comparison, DreamHost’s VPS page labels its comparison “as of June 2026” and lists overage rates for outbound transfer beyond specified allowances: AWS Lightsail at $0.09/GB, DigitalOcean at $0.01/GB, Vultr at $0.01/GB, and Linode/Akamai at $0.005/GB. The comparison’s example costs also reflect plan allowances and account-level grants, so these rates are not universal prices or a direct estimate of your bill. DreamHost describes its own VPS transfer as unmetered, subject to fair use. Check sustained-use rules as well as port speed
A 1 Gbps port describes link speed; by itself, it does not tell you the monthly transfer allowance or guarantee unrestricted sustained use. For example, iShosting’s VPS Service Restrictions describes plan- and region-dependent recommended average or constant loads and says the provider may limit bandwidth for continuous abuse or excess load affecting other customers. This is an example of provider-specific policy, not a rule that applies to every VPS.
Use vendor illustrations as arithmetic examples, not market prices
PartVPS illustrates 30-day usage of 2.59 TB at 8 Mbps for 1080p60, 5.18 TB at 16 Mbps for 1440p60, and 11.34 TB at 35 Mbps for 4K60. Those figures follow bitrate-times-time arithmetic; its recommended bitrate ranges are vendor-presented. They illustrate how bitrate changes the data total, not neutral pricing or a provider quote. Choose a VPS plan for continuous streaming
First confirm the plan can run your encoder workload. Then compare the specific plan and region on these points:
- Included outbound transfer per billing period and whether it is pooled across services or accounts.
- Overage rate, billing increments, and whether charges cover outbound traffic only or both directions.
- Port speed versus any sustained average-use or constant-load limits.
- Fair-use language and any provider right to restrict traffic.
- Data-center region and the plan’s base price.
For multiple destinations, include each separately transmitted output in your estimate. No market-wide typical cost follows from the arithmetic alone; calculate your usage and apply the current terms of the plan you are considering.
