A VPN can help reduce the chance that gaming peers discover your home IP address, but it cannot guarantee protection from a DDoS attack. It routes traffic through a VPN server, so other players generally see the server’s address instead of yours. If an attacker already knows your IP, or targets the VPN server, a VPN may not stop the disruption.
For gamers choosing a VPN, the practical questions are whether it masks your address in the situations you play, how much latency it adds, and whether you can configure it on your platform. The five services below are candidates named in recent gaming comparisons—not a verified, universal ranking.

What a VPN can—and cannot—do against DDoS attacks
In a peer-to-peer game or other situation where other players could learn your public IP address, routing traffic through a VPN can expose the VPN endpoint’s address instead. That can make it harder to target your home connection directly. Security.org describes hiding IP addresses as a way VPNs can help prevent DDoS attacks, while noting that the benefit is limited if an attacker already knows the IP or the provider’s defenses are inadequate: Security.org’s gaming VPN comparison.
- It is risk reduction, not immunity. A VPN does not make a known residential IP unknown, and a VPN endpoint can itself be attacked.
- It does not stop every kind of disruption. A match, game service, or network beyond your VPN connection can be affected even if your home IP is concealed.
- It is different from network-scale DDoS mitigation. Cloudflare documents managed protections for Layer 3/4 and Layer 7 attack vectors; that is a different service category from a consumer VPN masking one player’s address: Cloudflare’s DDoS protection documentation.
For comparison, Cisco’s IOS XE documentation describes router/firewall controls that provide DoS protection globally and at the VPN routing and forwarding (VRF) level. Those device-level controls are not a promise that a consumer VPN subscription absorbs attacks: Cisco’s configuration guide.

Five gaming VPNs to evaluate
Security.org’s comparison, updated August 25, 2026, lists NordVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost among its gaming options. It says it tested more than 60 VPNs and considers factors including latency, DDoS protection, speed, server locations, and console compatibility. TechRadar’s June 17, 2026 comparison also includes NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost among its gaming picks. These are editorial shortlists, not a controlled, directly comparable head-to-head test for this article.

Provider features, server networks, plan terms, and prices can change. The cited comparisons do not establish a single best VPN for every player, nor a universal measured level of DDoS protection across brands. Treat provider claims as claims to verify, not proof that a service makes you immune.

How to choose one for competitive gaming
Measure added ping and jitter on your own route
A VPN may add network overhead and send traffic on a longer route. Test the same game region with and without the VPN, at comparable times, and note both ping and jitter. Security.org recommends keeping added ping below 20–40 ms for competitive gaming; that is its editorial recommendation, not a universal threshold or guarantee for every game or connection. If the VPN route creates noticeable instability or lag, the IP-masking benefit may not be worth the gameplay trade-off.

Look for a server near the game’s region or relevant routing point. A large server count alone does not show that a route to your particular game will be fast or stable. Check your actual connection to the game after connecting, and try another nearby endpoint if latency or jitter rises.

Check protocol and platform support
Compare the VPN protocols offered for your device and router, then confirm that the chosen protocol is supported by both. Speed and consistency depend on the route, network conditions, device, and protocol; headline speed figures from different publications are not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Read the DDoS claim narrowly
Look for a clear explanation of what the provider means by DDoS protection: whether it refers to hiding your IP, defenses for its own servers, or another mitigation service. These are not interchangeable. A claim about protecting a VPN endpoint does not establish that an attacker cannot disrupt your home connection or game service.

Account for privacy, devices, and plan terms
Review the provider’s privacy and security information, the number of devices permitted under the current plan, and any setup restrictions that matter to your household. Confirm current prices and terms directly with the provider before subscribing; the editorial comparisons cited here do not establish a lasting price or plan feature.

Using a VPN with a console
Consoles may not support installing a VPN app directly. One common route is configuring a compatible router so the console’s traffic passes through the VPN. This requires checking compatibility among the router firmware, VPN provider, and protocol; a router does not independently absorb provider-scale attacks or make a player immune.

- Check the console’s network setup. Determine whether the console supports the VPN app or protocol you intend to use. If it does not, plan for router-level configuration.
- Confirm router compatibility. Check the router manufacturer’s firmware documentation and the VPN provider’s current router instructions. NordVPN’s guidance advises checking router compatibility and protocol support before setup: NordVPN’s VPN router guide.
- Set up the VPN on the router. Follow the current instructions for that exact router model and protocol; configuration steps vary by firmware and provider.
- Connect the console and test. Verify that the console is using the intended network route, then compare ping and stability in the game you actually play.

If you are being attacked now
Connecting to a VPN after someone has learned your home IP does not erase their knowledge of it. A new VPN route may change the address visible to some peers, but it is not a reliable fix for an attack already underway. If your connection is disrupted, contact your internet provider about the outage and its available mitigation or address-change options, and report abuse through the game or platform’s official channels. Avoid treating a VPN as a substitute for assistance from the network or service being attacked.
