Yes, you can face account restrictions if you use a VPN to disguise your location and claim a game that is unavailable in your actual region. But the official policies cited here do not say that simply having a VPN connected automatically gets you banned for claiming any free game. The key distinction is whether you are using it to bypass a regional rule.
Does using a VPN to claim a free game get you banned?
Not automatically, based on the platform policies cited here. An active VPN connection, disguising your location, and redeeming an offer that is restricted in your region are different situations. The clearest explicit warning concerns using a VPN or proxy to disguise your location when redeeming a region-restricted Steam Gift: Steam says that can violate its Terms of Service and may lead to account restrictions.

There is no reliable published statistic here showing how often VPN-assisted free-game claims result in bans. A platform’s list of possible sanctions is not a prediction of what will happen to any one account.

What the platform policies say
| Platform and scope | Location or VPN rule | Possible consequence or context |
|---|---|---|
| Steam: redeeming a region-restricted Steam Gift | Steam Support says using a VPN or proxy to disguise your location is strictly against its Terms of Service. | Steam says it may restrict the account. It also says a warning may appear if the attempted redemption conflicts with the user’s past Steam activity. Steam Support |
| Epic Games: account country and country changes | Epic says the account country should match where the player currently resides. Its country-change process requires active VPN or hosting services to be disabled. | Epic says country can affect game availability. In the context of changing account country, redeeming free games counts as a purchase; that statement should not be generalized to every purpose. Epic country-change instructions and Epic account-country guidance |
| Epic Games: general sanctions | The Terms of Service list conduct-related sanctions, but do not say an unrestricted free-game claim with a VPN automatically triggers them. | Possible measures include warnings, temporary or permanent bans on certain features or products, account suspension, and permanent termination for repeat or serious offenses. The terms were updated and became effective September 10, 2026. Epic Games Terms of Service |
| PlayStation: US terms | The US terms require users to select their country or region of residence when creating an account. The cited terms do not specifically address claiming free games through a VPN. | A breach may result in temporary or permanent suspension of an account or console, or loss of or restricted access to associated content. This is a US-terms example, not a universal rule. PlayStation US Terms of Service and PlayStation PSN Terms of Service (US), March 2025 page |
When the risk is higher
- You are trying to claim a game or gift that is restricted to a different country or region.
- You use the VPN to make the store believe you live somewhere other than your actual place of residence.
- You change account-country details or redeem an offer despite a platform warning that your location or eligibility does not match.
Steam states the VPN rule directly for region-restricted gift redemption. Epic’s account-country guidance emphasizes the player’s actual residence and requires VPN or hosting services to be disabled during a country change. These examples do not establish one identical rule across every storefront, promotion, game, or country.

How to reduce the chance of an account problem
- Check that the offer is available in the country where you actually reside and that your account country is accurate.
- Claim through the platform’s official storefront, without using a VPN to evade regional eligibility or account-country rules.
- If the store shows a location, region, or eligibility warning, do not try to work around it. Check the platform’s current support guidance or terms for that offer.
- If the platform sanctions your account and you believe it is a mistake, use its official appeal or support process. Epic documents product bans, which can remove access to a particular game or service, and account bans, which disable the Epic account, along with an appeals process. Epic sanctions and appeals
What this does not establish
The cited policies do not show that every VPN-connected claim of an unrestricted free game results in a ban, nor do they provide a ban rate for VPN-assisted claims. They do show that location masking to bypass a region restriction can create account risk, with Steam’s warning applying specifically to region-restricted Steam Gifts. Check the rules for the platform and promotion you are using rather than assuming one service’s policy applies everywhere.
