The reliable guidance comes from Autodesk’s support articles, which document that a VPN can slow some cloud-dependent features and file operations, but which do not certify or rank any consumer VPN provider. This guide explains where the slowdowns come from, how to test a VPN against your own modeling workflow, and what to check before you pay for a subscription.
What Autodesk’s guidance actually establishes
Autodesk has published several support articles that touch on VPNs. They describe problems and troubleshooting steps. They do not compare providers, and they do not say which VPN works best with Autodesk software. Three points are well documented:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A VPN can add latency to calls that some Autodesk product features make to cloud services and domains.
- Autodesk states that its products are not tested to work over VPN connections and that it does not ensure performance integrity under them.
- Autodesk does not publish a general bandwidth requirement for remote access to Vault over a VPN.
Latency and cloud features (January 20, 2025)
Autodesk Support’s article “Connecting to VPN results in delays in Autodesk products,” dated January 20, 2025, reports that a company VPN setup can introduce significant latency and delay replies from the cloud services and domains that certain software functions need. Its suggested fixes are case-specific: confirm that the required URLs and protocols are allowed through VPN and firewall exceptions, try a different tunnel, change encryption settings, or exclude selected public Autodesk traffic from VPN routing. These are troubleshooting options, not universal settings. Changing routing or exceptions can also conflict with your organization’s security policy, so check with your IT administrator before you change anything on a managed machine.

AutoCAD drawings over a VPN (July 9, 2025)
The article “Freeze or slow opening or saving drawings in AutoCAD over a VPN connection,” dated July 9, 2025, states that Autodesk products are not tested to work over VPN connections. For slow or frozen opening and saving of DWG and DXF files, Autodesk suggests checking file permissions, comparing connection speeds with and without the VPN, reducing file size where possible, and keeping the temporary drawing file location on the local computer when saving. That is Autodesk’s position on AutoCAD. It does not mean every VPN connection is unsupported or unsafe for CAD work.

Remote Vault access (December 4, 2025)
Autodesk’s article “Bandwidth requirements for remote access (VPN) to Vault,” dated December 4, 2025, gives no general bandwidth recommendation. It names the factors that determine what you need: the number of users connecting, how often they connect, file sizes, how often files are downloaded and uploaded, and the performance people expect. For slow links, Autodesk suggests checking files out, working locally while disconnected, checking the files back in afterward, and downloading files in advance so they are cached locally. This advice applies to Vault’s client/server workflow. It is not a bandwidth rule for every 3D application.
Gateway placement and transfer timing
Autodesk’s support article “Autodesk’s best practices for optimizing your VPN” (no clear publication date on the copy we reviewed) recommends placing VPN gateways close to where the team works, to reduce latency. It also recommends scheduling large transfers so they do not reduce VPN performance for other users. Distance and timing are therefore sound criteria to evaluate. The article does not show that a provider’s advertised server count predicts how well a modeling workflow will perform.

Where a VPN slows 3D work
Slowdowns in 3D modeling usually fall into one of four patterns. Identifying which one you have determines the fix.
| Symptom | Likely cause (per Autodesk guidance) | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud or licensing features pause or time out only while the VPN is on | Latency to cloud services and domains that the feature calls | Whether the required URLs and protocols are excepted; whether split routing for Autodesk traffic is allowed by your policy |
| Large DWG or DXF files freeze or are slow to open or save | Connection speed over the tunnel, file size, and the temporary file location | Speed with and without the VPN; whether temporary files are on the local drive |
| Vault check-outs and downloads are slow for a team | Number of users, file sizes, and transfer frequency | Whether large files can be cached locally in advance and checked in afterward |
| Performance drops at certain times of day | Shared VPN capacity and overlapping large transfers | Whether big uploads or syncs can be scheduled away from peak hours |
How to test a VPN against your own workflow
Because Autodesk does not certify providers, the only reliable way to judge a VPN for your work is to measure it on your own machine, with your own files and your own server. Use the same steps for each candidate and for a no-VPN baseline.

- OPERATING SYSTEM - Pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 11 Pro, offering enterprise-grade security with BitLocker and Remote Desktop, designed to support demanding professional applications and enhanced by AI Copilot for smarter, more efficient productivity across business and creative tasks
- Record your baseline first. With the VPN off, measure download and upload speed to the server or cloud service you use, and note the round-trip latency (ping) to it.
- Pick a repeatable task. Use one representative project: open a large DWG or model file, make a standard set of edits, save, and check out and in a file in Vault if your team uses it.
- Connect to each VPN with the same protocol setting where the app offers one, and choose a gateway in the same region as your office or your server. Record the location and protocol each time.
- Repeat the same measurements: speed, latency, time to open and save, and any timeouts or cloud-feature errors.
- Run the test at two times of day, since shared capacity and other users’ transfers change results.
- Compare each VPN against the baseline, not against the other VPNs alone. The useful number is how much slower the workflow gets, not which provider is fastest in general.
| Measure | How to record it | Why it matters for 3D work |
|---|---|---|
| Latency to the work server or cloud service | Ping or traceroute with the VPN off and on | Cloud calls that wait on replies stall the interface |
| Upload and download throughput | Transfer a file of known size and divide size by time | Governs check-in and check-out and large saves |
| Open and save time for a reference file | Stopwatch or application log, averaged over several runs | Shows the everyday cost of the VPN in your actual software |
| Route and gateway distance | Note the gateway city and the traceroute hop count | Autodesk recommends nearby gateways to reduce latency |
| Behavior during large transfers | Start a large sync and watch other tasks | Shows whether shared capacity affects your session |
| Application compatibility and routing options | Whether Autodesk traffic can be excluded from the tunnel, and whether your policy allows it | Some fixes depend on split routing, which not every provider or organization permits |
Troubleshooting branches
- Only cloud features are slow. Ask IT to check the required domains and protocols against VPN and firewall exceptions. Try a different tunnel or encryption setting only if policy allows.
- Only large drawings are slow. Confirm the temporary file location is on the local computer, reduce file size where you can, and compare the connection speed with and without the VPN before blaming the software.
- Vault is slow for a remote team. Check out the files you need before leaving the office, work locally, check them back in, and pre-download large assets so they are cached.
- Speed varies by hour. Schedule large uploads and syncs for off-peak times and test again at those times.
- Nothing improves after the steps above. Measure the baseline again without the VPN. If the workflow is still slow without a VPN, the cause is the network or the workstation, not the VPN.
Choosing a provider: what to verify
Once your own tests show what the VPN costs your workflow, the choice comes down to terms and policy. These points should be checked on each provider’s current website or policy pages, since they change:
- Whether the provider has an independent audit or a published, dated security or no-logs policy, and what it actually says.
- Whether it offers the gateway locations you need, and whether it lets you pick one.
- Whether split routing (excluding selected traffic from the tunnel) is available, and whether your organization permits it.
- Current price, renewal price, refund window, and cancellation steps. Promotional prices are often limited to a first term, so confirm the standard renewal rate.
- Whether the service works with your operating system and the protocols your IT team has approved.
This guide does not list current prices, discounts, or offers. Those change often, and any figure printed here would be out of date quickly. Check the provider directly before you buy.

Practical takeaway for different users
- Freelancer working alone on local files: you may not need a VPN for modeling at all. Use one only for network privacy on public Wi-Fi, and measure whether it slows large saves.
- Small team using cloud or Vault features: prioritize gateway location, measured latency, and whether Autodesk traffic can be routed outside the tunnel under your policy.
- Company-managed workstation: do not change VPN or firewall settings yourself. Send the test results and the Autodesk article to your IT administrator and ask them to apply the exceptions or routing changes that are approved.
Autodesk’s guidance gives you a clear way to diagnose slowdowns. A measured comparison against your own baseline, not a ranking, is what will tell you whether a particular VPN is acceptable for your 3D work.
