Use the official voter-registration lookup first for a routine status check. The federal Can I Vote route sends you to your state election website, where you can usually confirm whether your record is active and review the address, polling place and other fields that state publishes.
Contact your state or local election office when the lookup cannot find you, shows inactive status, displays an error, or you need to correct or update a record. An office can explain the rule that applies in your jurisdiction; a lookup is primarily an inspection tool and does not automatically change your registration.

Quick decision: lookup or election office?
The right choice depends on whether you are checking information or trying to solve a problem. Start with the lookup when the question is routine and there is time before the registration deadline. Move to an election office when the record is missing, inaccurate, inactive or time-sensitive.
Recommended Free Tools
| Situation | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to know whether you are registered | Official lookup through Can I Vote and your state election website | It is the fastest self-service way to inspect the record your state makes available. |
| The lookup finds no record | State or local election office | Officials can determine whether you used the wrong jurisdiction, need to register, or have a record that requires research. |
| The record says inactive | Election office, after reviewing the lookup | Inactive-status rules and the steps to restore active status are jurisdiction-specific. |
| Your name or address is wrong | Registration-update process and, when unclear, the election office | A status display does not itself amend your registration. |
| You moved to another state | Register in the new state and ask officials about the old record | Registration is handled by the state where you now reside; do not assume an old lookup transfers your record. |
| You need your polling place | Lookup first; office if the result conflicts with other official information | Assignments depend on residence and can change between elections. |
| The election is close or a deadline may have passed | State election website and election office immediately | There is no national deadline, and some deadlines can be as much as 30 days before an election. |
What the official lookup can tell you
Use the federal starting point
The federal voter-registration guidance directs voters to Can I Vote, which routes you to the election website for your state. Follow that route rather than relying on an advertisement, an unofficial database or a search result that does not identify the responsible election authority.

Once you reach the state service, enter the requested identifying information exactly as your registration uses it. The state site may ask for a legal name, residential address, date of birth, identification number or another combination. Do not assume that a form used in one state will ask for the same fields in another.
Review every field the state provides
At minimum, compare the legal name and current residential address with your actual information. Confirm whether the state labels the record active or registered, and check the assigned polling location if one is shown. Some states display party affiliation; others do not display it or do not require party registration, so an absent party field is not by itself proof that your registration failed.
Read the result literally. A confirmation that your record is active answers a status question, but it does not approve a future address or name change. A polling-place result is tied to the residence on file and may change before a later election.
Understand an inactive result
USAGov explains that a voter may be marked inactive after not responding to election officials’ mail and not voting in the last two federal general elections. That description is not a universal restoration rule: the jurisdiction controls what inactive means, what evidence it requests and how an inactive voter returns to active status. Treat the result as a reason to contact election officials before the election, not as a conclusion that you are permanently ineligible.
When contacting an election office is the better first move
The lookup cannot find you
A missing result can have several explanations, including a spelling difference, an old address, a recent application that has not been processed, or a search performed on the wrong state site. The responsible state or local office can distinguish those possibilities and tell you whether a new registration or a correction is required. Do not submit repeated forms blindly when an official can identify the underlying issue.
The record is inactive
Because inactive procedures vary, ask the office what action is required in your jurisdiction and whether it must be completed before a stated deadline. Ask where to submit the update, what identification or signature is accepted and how you will know the record is active again. The office, rather than the lookup screen, is the authoritative source for those procedural details.

Your name or address needs correction
If the displayed name, residential address or other registration information is wrong, use the state-approved update method. Depending on the jurisdiction, that may be an online form, a mailed form, an in-person request or another process. The lookup only reports what is currently on file; refreshing the page will not change it.
You moved or changed your name
A move within a state may require a new address, precinct or polling-place assignment. A move to another state generally calls for registration in the new state, subject to that state’s eligibility rules and deadlines. A legal-name change likewise requires an update rather than an assumption that the old record will be matched automatically. Contact the office when you cannot tell which update path applies.
The polling-place result is unclear
Check the status service first, then ask the election office if the location appears inconsistent with your current residence or with other official election instructions. Polling places are assigned by jurisdiction and residence and can change between elections, so a location from a previous election is not a reliable substitute for the current assignment.
Step-by-step: checking your registration
- Start at Can I Vote. Select the state in which you are registered or believe you should be registered. Follow the link to that state’s official election website.
- Use the state’s voter-status service. Check that the page is operated by the state or a county or local election authority. Avoid entering personal information into an unverified copy of a lookup form.
- Enter your information carefully. Match the spelling, punctuation and address format used on your registration. If the service asks for a former address or another identifier, provide the value requested rather than substituting a different one.
- Record what the result says. Note the status label, name, address, polling place and any instructions or warnings. A private note or printed confirmation can help you compare a later update, but the state’s record remains the authoritative version.
- Check the election date and deadline. A status result does not tell you that every future election is covered by the same rules. Confirm the registration deadline and any update deadline for the election you plan to vote in.
- Escalate unresolved issues. If the record is missing, inactive, inaccurate or contradictory, stop treating the lookup as the final answer and contact the responsible election office.
Step-by-step: contacting the right election office
Identify the responsible jurisdiction
Use the USAGov election-office directory or the election links on your state’s official website to find the state or local office responsible for your address. The office that handles registration may differ from the office that answers a polling-place question, so describe your issue and confirm that you have reached the correct jurisdiction.
Prepare a precise question
Have your name as registered, current residential address, the result shown by the lookup and the election date you are concerned about. Explain whether you are checking status, correcting information, responding to an inactive label, updating after a move or trying to locate a polling place. Providing the exact wording of an error or status message helps the official identify the correct procedure.

Keep the official response with your records
Note the office, date and instructions you received. After submitting an update, use the official lookup again when the office indicates that processing should be complete. If the result still does not match the instructions, contact the office promptly rather than waiting for Election Day.
Lookup versus office contact: the practical trade-offs
| Decision factor | Lookup | Election office |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Routine status and information check | Individualized explanation, correction and remedy |
| Speed | Usually immediate, subject to the state’s service availability | Depends on office hours, response channels and case complexity |
| Information available | Only the fields and messages the state publishes through the service | Can explain jurisdiction-specific rules and required actions |
| Can it change your record? | No; it reports the record | Can direct you to the authorized update or correction process |
| Best timing | Early, before a deadline, for a straightforward check | As soon as a problem appears or a deadline is close |
| Handling state variation | Displays the rules and fields built into that state’s system | Applies the rules for your particular state, county or municipality |
| Polling-place questions | Often shows the assigned location | Can investigate a mismatch or explain a change |
Common lookup problems and what to do next
No record appears
First verify that you selected the state where you live or are registered and that your information matches the requested format. If the result remains empty, contact the state or local office. Ask whether your application is pending, whether a different local jurisdiction maintains the record, or whether you must submit a new registration. The office can give a definitive answer; a blank search result cannot.
The result says inactive
Do not assume inactive means you cannot vote or that the record has been deleted. Ask the election office what response, update or other step the jurisdiction requires and whether a deadline applies. Because the treatment of inactive records differs by jurisdiction, generic advice from another state may be wrong for you.
The address is old
Use the official update process for your current residence. If you moved within the state, ask whether the change also alters your precinct or polling place. If you moved across state lines, register in the new state instead of expecting the former state’s lookup to transfer the record.
The name is different
Compare the lookup with your legal registration information. A recent legal-name change may require a formal update and supporting information specified by the state. Ask the office whether the change can be completed online, by mail or in person and how long processing normally takes under that jurisdiction’s rules.
The polling place looks wrong
Check that the address on the record is current and that you are viewing the assignment for the correct election. If the location still appears wrong, contact the election office before Election Day. Polling-place assignments are residence-based and can change between elections.

Party affiliation is missing
Do not treat an absent party field as a universal error. Party affiliation may not be displayed or required in every state. Ask the state office whether affiliation is recorded in that jurisdiction and whether it affects the election you plan to vote in.

Switch from a passive lookup to immediate official assistance. USAGov states that each state sets its own registration deadline and that it may be as much as 30 days before an election. Vote.gov notes that some states allow registration on Election Day while others close registration earlier. Confirm the actual date, eligibility and any same-day option with the state election website or office; do not assume another state’s deadline applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deadlines, same-day registration and state variation
There is no single national registration deadline. The deadline can differ by state, election type and the action you need to take. A voter registering for the first time, changing an address, changing a name or responding to an inactive status may face different instructions even in the same jurisdiction.
Some states permit Election Day registration, while others require registration earlier. A same-day option, where available, may still have its own identity, residence or eligibility requirements. Treat it as a state-specific procedure, not a fallback that exists nationwide.
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission provides state-by-state links for checking registration, updating records, finding election offices and reviewing voting options. Its summaries should be verified through the linked state and local sources, because the state authority controls the current rule and deadline.

Routine confirmation two months before an election
You have not moved or changed your name and simply want to confirm registration. Use Can I Vote, open your state’s lookup, verify the name, address, active status and polling place, then save the result for your own reference. No office call is necessary if the information is correct and no warning appears.
Best Value
Recent move within the same state
The lookup still shows your former address. Do not rely on the old polling-place assignment. Use the state’s address-update procedure and contact the election office if you cannot determine whether the change must be completed by a separate deadline.
Recent move across state lines
The former state’s lookup still shows an active record, but you now live elsewhere. Begin registration in the new state and confirm its deadline. Ask officials in either jurisdiction if you need guidance about the former record; an active result in the old state does not register you at your new address.
Inactive status shortly before voting
The lookup identifies you but labels the record inactive. Contact the responsible office immediately, quote the status shown and ask what action restores active status and whether it can be completed before the election. Waiting for the next routine update may leave too little time.
Conflicting polling-place information
The lookup and another official notice show different locations. Use the election office to resolve the conflict, providing your current address and the election date. Do not choose based on a location from a prior election or an unofficial map.
A pre-election checklist
- Check the official state lookup well before the registration deadline.
- Verify your legal name and current residential address.
- Read the status label, including any inactive or pending language.
- Confirm the polling place for the specific upcoming election when the state provides it.
- Understand that party affiliation may not appear in every state’s system.
- Submit a formal update after a move or name change; a lookup does not make the change.
- Contact the responsible state or local office for a missing, inactive, inaccurate or contradictory record.
- Confirm the exact deadline and whether your state offers Election Day registration.
- Keep the office’s instructions and any submission confirmation until the updated lookup matches.
Bottom line
For a normal “am I registered?” check, the official lookup reached through Can I Vote is the quickest starting point. It lets you inspect the information your state publishes without waiting for an office response. The election office becomes the right tool when the record needs interpretation or action: no result, inactive status, a move, a name change, incorrect information, a polling-place conflict or a deadline that is close. Because procedures and dates are set by each state and sometimes by local jurisdictions, verify the final answer with the responsible election authority rather than relying on a generic national rule.
