Volocopter’s VoloCity is a two-seat, battery-electric aircraft designed for short urban trips. It has 18 fixed-pitch rotors and is intended to connect city hubs such as train stations and airports. The company’s 2025 specification sheet lists an expected operational range of about 20 km, but VoloCity is not yet presented as a certified public passenger service.
What is the VoloCity?
VoloCity is Volocopter’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for intracity air-taxi routes. Its 18 fixed-pitch rotors provide lift, while its battery-electric propulsion avoids onboard fuel combustion. Volocopter describes the concept as a way to link places such as airports and train stations on short city journeys.

The aircraft is a developed prototype program, not merely a rendering: Volocopter’s current VoloCity product page reports more than 2,000 test flights across multiple prototype iterations. That company-reported total is distinct from the more than 1,000 test flights of earlier generations cited in Volocopter’s August 21, 2019 launch announcement.
How many people can it carry?
VoloCity has two seats: one for a pilot and one for a passenger in the initial operating concept. Volocopter describes autonomous operation as a future goal, not the initial service configuration. The two-seat layout makes this an air taxi for an individual passenger or a small party, rather than a high-capacity urban shuttle.

What are its published range and speed?
Volocopter’s 2025 specification sheet gives the following figures. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not a guarantee of a route’s usable distance or commercial performance.
| Specification | Volocopter’s published figure |
|---|---|
| Operational range | Approximately 20 km; Volocopter says this depends on ambient conditions, safety margins, and final design and testing. |
| Maximum airspeed | 100 km/h. |
| Cruise speed | 90 km/h. |
| Maximum take-off mass | Approximately 1,000 kg. |
| Seats | Two. |
| Rotors | 18 fixed-pitch rotors. |
The range figure is best read as an expected specification, not a demonstrated service guarantee. Actual route capability depends on conditions and the aircraft’s final certified configuration. A short stated range also explains the vehicle’s city-hub mission: it is not positioned as a regional aircraft for longer suburban journeys.

How does it get and store power?
VoloCity uses battery-electric propulsion. Volocopter’s 2025 specification sheet describes battery swapping alongside external charging stations, rather than relying solely on recharging the aircraft in place between every flight. The published material does not establish a charging duration or a specific operating turnaround time.
Is VoloCity certified or carrying passengers commercially?
Volocopter says it is working toward type certification with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Its current product page describes initial flights as piloted, with one pilot and one passenger. The available company information does not establish that a public passenger service is operating or that the aircraft has completed type certification. Certification and service-entry plans can change, so a target or development statement should not be treated as approval to fly fare-paying passengers.

How does it fit among Volocopter’s aircraft?
VoloCity is the company’s shorter-range, intracity concept. Volocopter positions its VoloConnect/VoloRegion family for longer urban and suburban missions. That distinction matters when comparing eVTOLs: passenger capacity and top speed alone do not show whether an aircraft is designed for the same routes, certification status, or operating model.
- Mission: VoloCity targets short city trips between hubs; the VoloConnect/VoloRegion family is aimed at longer urban and suburban journeys.
- Service model: VoloCity’s initial concept is piloted; autonomy is described as a future goal.
- Evidence to compare: Check published range, cruise and maximum speed, passenger capacity, certification stage, energy and charging approach, noise claims, and redundancy architecture. The cited VoloCity materials do not provide comparable figures for every one of those categories, so they do not support a complete head-to-head performance ranking.
What the numbers do—and do not—show
The VoloCity is a real aircraft development program with prototypes and company-reported test flights. Its published specifications describe a compact, two-seat electric aircraft for short urban routes. They do not by themselves demonstrate certified range, routine passenger operations, or a particular date for commercial launch.
