First determine whether you cannot transmit, cannot hear teammates, or both. Then check EA’s current Apex Game Info Hub for a communication incident before replacing hardware or reinstalling the game. A working headset can appear broken when Apex, a console party, an account restriction, or a platform outage is blocking chat.
Check whether Apex voice chat is currently disabled
Open the official Apex Game Info Hub and look for a current voice-communications notice. Compare reports with your squad:

- If every player is affected, especially on one platform, suspect a service or platform incident.
- If only one account is affected, check privacy, family, age, or communication restrictions.
- If only your headset fails while party chat and other applications work, continue with local troubleshooting.
- Test with a friend on another platform; a cross-platform failure does not by itself mean cross-play is broken.
EA temporarily disabled Xbox voice communications across platforms on May 6, 2026 while investigating a crash-related issue; the later Game Info Hub listing marked that incident fixed. It is a useful example of how a server-side change can mimic a dead microphone, not evidence that Xbox chat is permanently disabled. Do not treat the older console-chat wording in EA’s FAQ as a current universal outage: compare its date and context with newer Game Info Hub notices.
During a confirmed incident, avoid repeated reinstalls or buying a headset. Wait for the official status update and retest after service is restored.

Reset Apex’s own voice-chat settings
- Launch Apex Legends and select the cogwheel in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Gameplay, scroll to Accessibility, and set Disable Voice Chat to Off.
- Open the Audio tab and explicitly choose the intended Voice Chat Input Device rather than relying on a default device.
- Set Voice Chat Record Mode to Open Mic for a test. Open Mic transmits when sound exceeds its threshold.
- If you prefer Push to Talk, hold T on PC while testing, unless you have remapped the key. EA identifies Push to Talk as PC-only.
- With Open Mic selected, temporarily lower Open Mic Record Threshold; lower values are more sensitive.
- Raise Incoming Voice Chat Volume if you can speak but cannot hear teammates.
- Apply the changes, return to the lobby, and test in a match.
Incoming voice-to-text and text-to-speech are accessibility options; they do not replace a functioning microphone or game-chat output.
Fast hardware and routing checks
- Turn off the headset’s physical mute switch and check the controller microphone indicator.
- Connect the headset before launching Apex, then restart the game after changing devices.
- Test the microphone in another application or the console’s party-chat test. If it fails there too, fix the platform or hardware first.
- Disconnect unused USB microphones, webcams, Bluetooth devices, controllers, and monitor audio temporarily. Select the headset microphone explicitly.
- For Bluetooth headsets, verify that the microphone (hands-free) profile is active; some systems expose separate stereo and microphone profiles. A wired headset is a useful isolation test.
- Leave PlayStation or Xbox Party Chat before testing Apex game chat. Party routing can suppress or divert in-game audio.
EA forum troubleshooting guidance likewise recommends proving that the microphone works at the operating-system or console level before changing game settings: EA forum guidance.
PC: Windows, Push to Talk, and other applications
Select and permit the microphone in Windows
- Open Windows sound settings and choose the headset microphone as the input device.
- Speak and confirm that the input meter responds. If Apex is set to use a default device, set this microphone as Windows’ default input.
- Open Windows microphone privacy settings and allow microphone access for the device and desktop applications.
- Close Apex, change the device or permission, and relaunch the game so it detects the new state.
Menu names vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds, but the required checks are the input device, the input meter, and desktop-app microphone permission.

Separate a keybind problem from a microphone problem
Hold T while speaking if Push to Talk is selected. Check Apex’s keybind for a conflict with keyboard software, then switch temporarily to Open Mic. If Open Mic works, the microphone is probably fine and the binding or key press is the fault.
Close competing voice software
Fully close Discord, OBS, Teams, browser voice tabs, recording tools, and headset utilities, then relaunch Apex. These applications may have selected a different microphone or altered permissions and routing. Do not treat “Run as administrator” as a guaranteed fix; it is an anecdotal community suggestion and can create unnecessary privilege exposure.
Repair files only after audio checks
- Restart Steam or the EA app and install pending launcher and game updates.
- Use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
- Install pending Windows and audio-driver updates, then reboot.
- Reinstall Apex only when local files are demonstrably damaged and less invasive checks have failed; reinstalling cannot repair a server or account restriction.
PlayStation: party routing and account controls
- Leave PlayStation Party Chat and select Apex game chat for the test.
- Check the headset mute switch, controller microphone indicator, and the selected input and output device.
- Test the same headset in a PlayStation party. If it fails there, troubleshoot the console or headset rather than Apex.
- Review PlayStation privacy, communication, parental-control, and age-account settings.
- If you see “Voice and text chat aren’t available for your account,” treat it as a platform-account restriction. An EA forum response explains that a PlayStation-imposed restriction cannot be lifted by EA or Respawn; see the platform-restriction discussion.
- Power the console off completely and restart Apex instead of resuming it from standby.
Xbox: party chat, privacy, and incident checks
- Leave Xbox Party Chat and test Apex game chat.
- Check mute controls on the headset, controller, and console, then test the microphone in Xbox Party Chat.
- Review Xbox communication and multiplayer privacy settings, family or child-account controls, and any age-verification requirement.
- Perform a full console restart and relaunch Apex.
- If the microphone indicator responds but neither side can hear voice, suspect routing, an account restriction, or an EA incident. If several Xbox players report the same failure, check the Game Info Hub before changing hardware.
EA’s May 6, 2026 notice stated that Xbox players could not hear or speak to players on any platform while that temporary disablement was active: incident notice. That was a dated event, not a permanent Xbox rule.

Nintendo Switch: use the game’s chat, not the mobile app
- Use a headset compatible with Nintendo Switch and verify Apex’s in-game voice-chat setting.
- Apex supports in-game voice chat on Switch but is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app for voice chat.
- If Bluetooth audio works but the microphone does not, test a wired headset and review Nintendo’s Bluetooth-audio troubleshooting resources.

Cross-play and temporary alternatives
EA’s FAQ states that cross-platform parties can use in-game voice chat: Apex FAQ. Console party chat can nevertheless divert game audio, so the clean test is to leave the party, restart Apex, and test with one squadmate on another platform.
If Apex chat remains unavailable, use platform party chat when everyone shares an ecosystem, or Discord where the platform and account support it. Apex text chat and its accessibility conversion options can provide a temporary fallback. These alternatives bypass the fault; they do not repair Apex game chat.

When to contact support
Stop changing settings when the microphone works elsewhere, Apex is configured correctly, party chat is disabled, and an official incident or account message explains the failure. Record:
- Platform, game version, launcher, headset model, and the exact symptom.
- Whether the microphone works in another application or platform party chat.
- Any Apex error, account-restriction, privacy, or age-verification message.
- Whether other players, platforms, or accounts are affected.
Use EA’s Apex status and Game Info Hub and contact EA for Apex or EA-app faults. Contact Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo when the restriction, privacy setting, or headset failure occurs at the platform level.
