A performance feels authentic when an actor’s choices make a character’s inner life believable—and when those choices fit the way an audience encounters the character. Film usually frames a selected performance for viewers; games can let players move closer, change the timing of an encounter, or act in the same world. Those different conditions shape how performances are made and perceived, but they do not establish that one medium produces better acting.
What makes a performance feel authentic?
Viewers and players tend to believe a character when the performance makes the character’s intentions, emotions, and reactions feel coherent. That does not require naturalistic delivery in every scene: a stylized voice, heightened movement, or restrained expression can feel truthful if it makes sense for the character and situation.

The useful comparison is not whether game acting is more or less genuine than film acting. It is how the audience encounters the character, what the performer is asked to do, and how the production turns that work into a finished scene.

Film frames the performance
A film viewer receives a sequence shaped by framing, editing, and the choices made about what to show. Shot size and camera position can direct attention to a face, a gesture, or a broader physical action. The audience does not generally choose how close to get to a character or when to pause an encounter.

Games can put the player inside the encounter
A game may let a player approach a character, look around, or control when an interaction begins and ends. That changes the conditions under which a performance is read. In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, motion-capture performer Oliver Hollis said that a player can act as both audience and director. He noted that a player may approach a character and look them in the eyes, making apparent falseness easier to notice.
Hollis’s observation describes a possible effect of player proximity, not a universal audience finding. A game can also direct attention through camera placement, animation, sound, and interaction design. The player’s freedom varies by game and scene.

What does “game voice acting” include?
Game performance is not limited to recording dialogue in a booth. Depending on the role and production, an actor may provide voice alone, movement, facial performance, stunts, or a combination of voice and physical acting. Some projects use performance capture to record aspects of an actor’s face and body as well as speech.

SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Comic-Con panel account discusses distinctions among voice acting, performance capture, and movement performance, as well as character development. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Call of Duty panel description offers specific examples of performers working across formats: actor and voice director Krizia Bajos has worked in voice roles and full performance capture, while Neil Ellice’s portrayal of Soap combined performance capture and voice work over three years. These examples show the range of possible workflows; they are not a template for every game.

Why capture is not the finished performance
Performance capture supplies material for a production; it does not by itself create the final character on screen. Recorded data can require processing and cleanup, and the result is shaped by writing, animation, lighting, implementation, and later refinement.
In a PlayStation Blog account of The Last of Us, Naughty Dog describes a process involving cameras that track markers on performers’ suits, cleanup of raw data, and further work across writing, performance, scripting, animation, lighting, and refinement. The post also describes tight mocap suits, long hours, and occasional ad-libbing. It is a named production example, not evidence that every game uses the same tools or sequence of steps.

This larger pipeline matters to authenticity because the final audience sees a constructed character, not raw capture. The performer’s choices are one important part of that character, alongside decisions made by directors, writers, animators, technical crews, and other collaborators.
What constraints shape the performance?
- Framing and presentation: Film can use shot size and editing to guide attention. Games can also frame scenes, but the player’s movement or camera control may alter what is visible and when.
- Performance format: A voice-only recording asks the actor to convey character through sound. Combined voice and movement capture may add physical and facial performance, while introducing capture-specific constraints.
- Technology and implementation: Capture systems do not record every detail perfectly, and recorded material needs to be interpreted and integrated into the game. Hollis told The Guardian that motion-capture performers still communicate the truth of a character, but work under different rules than film performers.
- Collaboration: A game character can be shaped by performers, directors, writers, capture crews, animators, and technical teams. The relative contributions and workflow vary by production.
These are differences in working conditions, not a scorecard. Neither medium has a single acting style, and the available evidence does not establish that one is inherently more authentic or more demanding.

What can players and viewers listen or look for?
- Coherent choices: Does the character’s delivery and behavior fit what they want, know, or feel in the moment?
- Responsive reactions: Do pauses, shifts in tone, facial expression, or movement feel connected to what is happening around the character?
- Believable integration: Does the voice feel connected to the face and body, where those elements are presented together?
- Fit with the encounter: Does the performance work in the scene as the audience receives it—whether through a film’s framing or a player-controlled interaction?
These questions help explain why a performance may feel convincing without implying that authenticity can be measured by a universal test. The sources available here offer production observations and attributed perspectives, not a controlled comparison of acting quality or an audience survey.
