Researchers demonstrated that a short text message could be sent through the air as pulses of alcohol: a spritz represented a binary one, while silence represented a zero. The receiver detected the alcohol and decoded the pattern. It was a tabletop experiment in molecular communication—not a practical replacement for radio, Wi-Fi or phone texting.
How did chemical texting work?
The 2013 study by Nariman Farsad, Weisi Guo and Andrew W. Eckford encoded text using International Telegraph Alphabet No. 2, a five-bit-per-character code. Its transmitter converted the message into a sequence of ones and zeros, then used an electronic spray to release alcohol for each one. A zero meant no spray. At the other end, an alcohol sensor registered concentration changes, and electronics decoded those changes back into text.

The apparatus combined programmable Arduino electronics, the spray, an alcohol sensor and, in flow-assisted tests, a tabletop fan. In the paper’s final implementation, the researchers chose an MQ-3 alcohol sensor after testing three sensors. They cited its low noise, response across a wider separation range, simple circuitry and ability to draw power from the Arduino. The paper describes the setup and its design choices.

Was vodka the chemical used?
Not in the paper’s main methods: the study identifies isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, as the signaling chemical. A contemporaneous Chemistry World report says the technique also worked with vodka. The headline’s vodka framing is therefore accurate as a reported demonstration, but it should not be mistaken for the study’s principal test liquid.

How far could the message travel?
Chemistry World reported a maximum transmission distance of four metres for the fan-assisted tabletop setup. That figure describes this particular experiment, not a general range for chemical communication systems.
Diffusion versus airflow
The authors found diffusion useful at short distances, up to one metre in their apparatus. At greater separation, diffusion alone became impractical because the signal’s arrival and the sensor response were slow. They used fan-assisted airflow for the longer-distance communication setup. These results describe the tested arrangement; they do not establish universal performance rankings for diffusion and airflow.

What did the experiment demonstrate—and what did it not?
It demonstrated a way to encode and recover information using airborne chemical signals on a macroscopic tabletop testbed. It did not show a deployed messaging system, reliable communication in a biological environment, or communication between nanoscale devices. Micro- and nanoscale communication was a longer-term research motivation, not the scale at which this text-message experiment operated.

Chemistry World reported criticism that this is not equivalent to molecular communication between nanomachines, where the molecules themselves may carry information in a different way. That critique questions how closely the tabletop method represents some proposed nanoscale systems; it does not erase the experimental result.

Why does the paper matter to communication research?
The work offers a practical testbed for studying communication through chemical signals and the real-world behavior of such systems. The authors emphasize that systems can behave nonlinearly in practice, even when simulations and analysis often assume linearity. That makes the tabletop apparatus useful for examining assumptions and developing models, without proving that the same design will work at smaller scales.
The authors described the platform as costing in the hundreds of US dollars. That is a broad figure reported in the 2013 paper, not a current price or a verified bill of materials. The named components—including an Arduino Uno, an electronic spray and several alcohol sensors—document the historical experiment rather than define a current shopping list.
