For a basic 24/7 YouTube playlist stream capped at 1080p, vMix HD is generally enough. Both HD and 4K licenses list streaming and Playlist support; choose 4K when you need 4K output or an edition-specific production feature, not simply because the channel runs continuously. The bigger operational caveat is that vMix supports looping playback but does not provide time-of-day scheduling for a full TV-style program schedule.
Which vMix license should you choose?
The decision turns on output resolution and production features—not whether the playlist runs for hours. The vMix comparison lists these lifetime license prices and maximum resolutions; prices and terms can change, so check the official comparison before buying.

Choose HD for a 1080p loop
If every video and the intended stream output are 1080p or lower, and you only need a repeating playlist, HD includes the listed capabilities. Buying 4K does not make a 1080p source into 4K; the edition matters when the production actually needs higher-resolution output or the higher-edition features.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- Color Adjustment Controls - Automatically improve image color, contrast, and quality of your videos.
- Frame Interpolation - Transform grainy footage into smoother, more detailed scenes by seamlessly adding AI-generated frames. (feature available on Intel AI PCs only)
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- Brand Kits - Manage assets, colors, and designs to keep your video content consistent and memorable.
Choose 4K for 4K output or listed production features
The 4K column lists two recorders and Instant Replay for one camera, which HD does not list. vMix’s edition guide groups 4K support, separate recording of each camera, two simultaneous fullscreen or external outputs, one-camera Instant Replay, PTZ control, and up to four vMix Call callers among capabilities available in 4K/Pro/Max editions. If any of those are part of your production, verify the specific edition requirement before purchasing; 4K may be sufficient, but some capabilities are also in higher editions.
What a 24/7 playlist can—and cannot—do in vMix
vMix’s Playlist can play videos back-to-back in a constant loop. Video List can load a list as a single input, play items back-to-back, loop or randomize playback, and avoid loading every video at once, which can consume system resources.

That supports continuous playback, but it is not a full broadcast scheduler. The vMix Knowledge Base says vMix is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. In practical terms, a loop can keep playing, but the documented workflow does not establish scheduled program starts or a clock-based daily lineup. Read vMix’s scheduling explanation.

The exact controls can vary with software versions, so use vMix’s current instructions for the interface. Its documented YouTube workflows are to create or configure a stream in YouTube Studio and enter its stream key in vMix, or use vMix’s YouTube Live Stream Now option to create the stream from vMix. - Prepare the playlist. Add the videos to Playlist for a simple repeating sequence. Use Video List when you want one input to handle a larger list, looping or randomized playback without loading every video into memory at once.
- Choose the YouTube setup path. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream, then enter its stream key in vMix; alternatively, select YouTube Live Stream Now in vMix to create the stream there.
- Start the broadcast and confirm playback. Check YouTube’s live view and vMix’s output rather than assuming that creating a stream means the playlist is reaching viewers.
- Plan what happens if the connection drops. A software setup path does not guarantee continuous uptime. Decide how the stream will be restarted and how any recordings or archives will be preserved.
Plan the YouTube archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends making a local recording as a backup. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says it automatically archives streams at 1440p and 2160p. For a channel intended to run continuously, do not assume one 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay: plan local recording, backup storage, or a deliberate stream segmentation and archive workflow. YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check the PC before choosing a local 24/7 setup
vMix lists Windows 10/11, a 2 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB memory, a dedicated DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics card, and a 1920 × 1080 display as minimum requirements. Its recommended specifications include an Intel Core i7 at 3 GHz or higher, 8 GB RAM, an SSD, dedicated Nvidia graphics with 2 GB or more memory, and a 1920 × 1080 display. These are vendor specifications, not a guarantee of performance for every playlist; actual demands vary with resolution, inputs, outputs, and recording. Check vMix’s supported hardware page.

An SSD is relevant if you will record locally or maintain a local backup, but the cited requirements do not make it mandatory just to stream a playlist. Storage capacity and endurance depend on how much you record and retain; vMix and YouTube do not specify a particular drive model or capacity for this workflow.
Compare purchase and update costs
The official comparison lists first 12 months of free updates with lifetime licenses. vMix’s software page says lifetime licenses can be used indefinitely and describes a $60 update upgrade for 12 additional months of version updates after the included period. vMix Max is listed at $50 USD per month and supports 4K, but it is a subscription option rather than one of the two lifetime licenses above. These terms and prices are time-sensitive; confirm them on the comparison page and vMix software page before purchase.
