A missing-file message, a blue screen, a blocked driver, and an unknown VMBUS device in Device Manager are different situations, so they do not share one universal fix. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC. If the computer will not boot, run SFC offline from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). A legacy Hyper-V guest may instead need the Detect HAL setting to switch from an ACPI HAL to an APIC-based HAL.
What vmbus.sys does and why the error appears
VMBus is the communication bus that Hyper-V virtual machines use to communicate with the host and with integration devices. The vmbus.sys driver belongs to that Windows virtualization path. When Windows reports that the file is missing or cannot be found, the underlying problem may be protected Windows-file corruption, an incomplete or damaged update, boot-environment damage, or a guest configuration that is incompatible with Hyper-V.

The wording matters. A stop error during startup is a boot problem; a “driver cannot load” warning may involve Windows security blocking an incompatible driver; and an unknown VMBUS entry in Device Manager can be harmless in a documented Hyper-V scenario. Treating all three as proof that the file must be downloaded and copied back can make the system less safe and may not address the cause.
Identify your symptom before changing anything

Safety checks before repair
- Do not download a replacement
vmbus.sysfrom a DLL-download or file-sharing site. A system driver must come from Windows servicing, Microsoft Update, or trusted installation media that matches your Windows installation. - If Windows still starts, sign in with an administrator account and save open work. DISM and SFC can take time, and a restart is required.
- If this is a virtual machine, record whether the guest is running on Hyper-V and whether its virtual disk originated with Virtual Server 2005 or Virtual PC 2007. That history determines whether the HAL procedure applies.
- If you are working in WinRE, do not assume that the Windows installation is on drive C:. WinRE often assigns different letters to the Windows and boot volumes.
Repair vmbus.sys while Windows still starts
1. Install pending Windows updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11 or Windows 10, select Check for updates, install the offered updates, and restart. An interrupted servicing operation can leave the component store or protected files inconsistent; completing the pending update and rebooting may restore the normal driver state.
After the restart, reproduce the original action once. If the same message returns, continue with the component-store repair rather than repeatedly rebooting.
2. Repair the component store with DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. Microsoft explicitly recommends running DISM before System File Checker because “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.”

- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- Leave the window open until the operation reaches completion. The command normally obtains repair files from Microsoft Update. If that source is unavailable, DISM needs a matching Windows installation or another suitable network repair source; do not point it at an unrelated edition or build.
- Read the final status. A successful completion means DISM repaired or verified the component store; an error means the source or servicing problem still needs attention before SFC can be trusted.

3. Repair protected Windows files with SFC
When DISM finishes, use the same elevated Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannowWait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because the result is produced at the end. Microsoft reports several possible outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not detect protected-file corruption. If the VMBus problem remains, investigate the boot environment, Hyper-V guest configuration, or a blocked driver instead of repeatedly running SFC.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the original operation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart only if necessary, then inspect the servicing log and move to the WinRE or source-repair path if the error persists.
The SFC scan repairs protected files; it does not convert an incompatible guest HAL or override a security block on a driver.
4. Check the servicing log when corruption remains
If DISM or SFC reports unresolved corruption, review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. This is the servicing log Microsoft identifies for component and protected-file repairs. Search the log for entries related to the failed operation and the affected file. Preserve a copy before making further changes if you need to show the results to an administrator or support technician.

Windows Update failures can have additional servicing causes and recovery steps; Microsoft’s troubleshooting reference is Fix Windows Update errors.
5. Restart and verify the original symptom
Restart after SFC completes. Then perform the action that originally triggered the message: boot the affected installation, start the Hyper-V guest, or open Device Manager and refresh the device list. A repaired system file should remove a corruption-based error, but a legacy-HAL mismatch or Memory Integrity block will require its own procedure below.
If Windows will not boot: use WinRE and offline SFC
Online commands such as /Online repair the Windows instance that is currently running. When the installed system will not boot, that is usually WinRE rather than the affected installation. Run the repair against the offline Windows directory instead.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment
- From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- If Windows cannot reach that screen, start from Windows installation or recovery media and choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
In WinRE, identify the actual Windows and boot-volume letters before running a repair. They may not be C: in this environment. You can inspect volumes from Command Prompt and locate the volume containing the Windows directory; substitute the letters you find in the command.

Run offline SFC with the correct letters
For example, if the boot volume is C: and the Windows volume is C:, run:
SFC /Scannow /OffBootDir=C: /OffWinDir=C:WindowsIf WinRE assigned different letters, replace both paths. The command must point to the offline installation, not to the temporary WinRE environment. Wait for completion, note whether files were repaired, and restart.
Use Startup Repair or System Restore when the damage is broader
If offline SFC cannot restore booting, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Startup Repair is appropriate when the boot-issues pattern indicates damaged startup configuration. System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point when one exists. These options address broader boot damage; they do not replace the Hyper-V HAL procedure for a legacy guest.

Microsoft documents a specific compatibility failure for a guest created from a Virtual Server 2005 or Virtual PC 2007 virtual disk. Such a guest can retain an ACPI hardware-abstraction layer (HAL), while Hyper-V Integration Services requires an APIC HAL. In that case, the VMBus driver path can fail even when the Windows files themselves are intact.
- Inside the affected guest, press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Boot tab and select Advanced options.
- Select Detect HAL, apply the change, and restart the guest.
- After Windows starts, open Device Manager and verify that the computer is using an APIC-based PC HAL and that the expected Hyper-V Integration Services devices are present.
- Start the guest again and check whether the VMBus error has cleared.
Do not select this option merely because a physical Windows PC displays a generic vmbus.sys message. It is intended for the documented legacy-media and Hyper-V compatibility case. The Microsoft procedure and its ACPI-versus-APIC explanation are at VMBus device does not load.
Understand an unknown VMBUS device in Device Manager
An unknown device with a VMBUS-related description is not automatically evidence that vmbus.sys is missing. Microsoft documents AVMA and Initial Machine Config (IMC) virtual devices that can appear without a usable driver name in a Hyper-V guest. In that documented situation, the entries can be safely ignored.
Before deleting a device, confirm the machine is a Hyper-V guest and compare the device’s properties with Microsoft’s documented AVMA/IMC scenario. If the entry is on a physical PC, appears alongside a boot failure, or is accompanied by other missing devices, use the DISM/SFC and boot-repair paths instead of assuming it is benign. The reference is Unknown device on VMBus in a virtual machine.
When Windows says a driver cannot load
On Windows 11 and supported Windows 10 configurations, Memory Integrity can prevent an incompatible driver from loading. The warning may mention a driver rather than saying that vmbus.sys itself is absent. First try to obtain a compatible driver through Windows Update or directly from the hardware maker. This is safer and more durable than weakening a security feature.
Use Memory Integrity only as a temporary diagnostic
- Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity status and the name of any incompatible driver shown there.
- Search Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer’s support page for a newer, compatible driver.
- Install the compatible driver, restart, and test again.
- If you must test whether Memory Integrity is the blocker, change it only temporarily, restart, and retest. Turn it back on after the diagnostic and continue looking for a compatible driver.
Microsoft warns that continuing without addressing a blocked driver can have consequences ranging from negligible to severe, and that turning off Memory Integrity weakens the device’s secured-core protection. Read the current warning at A driver can’t load on this device. Disabling Memory Integrity is not a general repair for a missing system file.
Choose the repair path by symptom and risk

Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Copying a driver from another PC: driver files must match the Windows build and servicing state. Manual replacement can introduce version or signature mismatches.
- Running SFC before DISM: SFC may lack a healthy component-store source. Microsoft’s normal order is DISM first, then SFC.
- Using online SFC from WinRE: the command may scan WinRE instead of the installed Windows instance. Use the offline switches and verify the letters.
- Disabling Memory Integrity permanently: that removes a security boundary without fixing the underlying incompatible driver.
- Applying Detect HAL to every installation: the setting addresses a documented legacy Hyper-V guest mismatch, not ordinary file corruption on a physical computer.
- Deleting every unknown VMBUS entry: AVMA and IMC devices documented by Microsoft may be safe to ignore.
When to escalate
Seek help from your organization’s Windows or virtualization administrator when DISM cannot obtain a matching repair source, SFC repeatedly reports unrepairable corruption, the offline installation cannot be identified, or a Hyper-V guest remains unable to load Integration Services after the HAL check. Provide the exact stop-code or message, whether the machine is physical or virtual, the Windows edition and build, the DISM/SFC result, and the relevant CBS.log entries. Do not send passwords or private virtual-disk contents with a support request.

- Any unknown VMBUS device was evaluated against the documented AVMA/IMC case before being ignored or changed.
