If it buffers, test the connection and playback in YouTube’s app or at youtube.com before changing VLC settings. There is no single best resolution or cache value for every hotspot, phone, video, and location.
First identify the problem: blur, buffering, or both
- Blurry but smooth: YouTube may have selected a lower resolution, or the original upload may not be available in higher quality. Check the player’s quality setting first.
- Sharp at first, then stalls: The connection may not sustain playback, or other devices may be using the hotspot. Try a lower quality and compare another connection.
- Both blurry and buffering: YouTube may be adjusting quality to viewing conditions. Test Auto and a lower manual resolution, then compare playback in YouTube’s app or browser.
YouTube says it changes stream quality based on viewing conditions, including connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload, and browser support. Its Android quality controls are documented at Google YouTube Help.

Choose a YouTube quality setting on Android
In the YouTube player, open Settings → Quality. The options can vary with the video and device.

If the video is smooth but soft
Open Settings → Quality → Advanced, if offered, and test an available higher resolution. If that option is absent or the video remains soft, the original upload may not contain a higher-quality version. A larger screen or a different player can also affect the perceived result; VLC cannot restore detail that is not in the source or selected stream.

If it keeps buffering
Try Auto or Data saver, or select a lower resolution under Advanced. YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps connection speed for HD streaming; this is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee for every hotspot, video, or HD format. See YouTube’s Android streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Compare YouTube and VLC before changing VLC
- Play the same video in YouTube’s app or at youtube.com. Check its quality under Settings → Quality.
- Play the same video in VLC under the same hotspot conditions. Note whether the difference is sharpness, buffering, or both.
- If possible, try another network. Also reduce other devices’ use of the hotspot, then compare again.
- Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped.
If the same video works well in YouTube but not VLC, the difference may be in the app’s playback path or available controls, rather than a setting that applies universally. VideoLAN documents Android support for network stream formats including HLS and DASH, but format support does not guarantee that every YouTube URL works or that VLC behaves like YouTube’s adaptive player. For diagnosis, YouTube recommends its own app or website.

Adjust VLC for Android’s network cache only if playback stalls
VLC’s network cache buffers network media; it is not a resolution or bitrate control. VideoLAN explains that caching can reduce buffering on a slow connection, while a larger cache adds waiting time before playback. In VLC for Android, the documented Network caching option is in Settings → Advanced and is described for software decoding. See VideoLAN’s VLC for Android Advanced settings documentation.
- Open VLC and go to Settings → Advanced.
- Find Network caching. If you choose to change it, make a small adjustment and test the same stream again.
- If startup or seeking becomes noticeably slower, restore the previous setting. Use the clear/reset option if available to return to the default.
VideoLAN does not establish one best millisecond value for all connections. A larger cache may smooth some interruptions, but it cannot improve the hotspot’s throughput or make the image sharper.

Do not use frame skip to fix a blurry picture
VideoLAN describes frame skip as a performance option, but warns that it lowers video quality. It is a poor first adjustment when the complaint is already low picture quality.

- Compare another connection: If the same video and device work better elsewhere, the hotspot connection is a likely factor, though this alone does not identify the cause.
- Reduce competing use: Disconnect or pause other devices using the hotspot, then test again.
- Check the source: Confirm that the original upload offers a higher resolution before expecting the player to show one.
- Consider offline viewing where available: YouTube says downloads are available in India for qualifying videos, with purchased shows and movies excluded. Availability depends on eligibility and rights; higher-quality downloads use more data and storage. Details: YouTube offline viewing help.
These checks do not establish a best Indian carrier, plan, or location. Mobile performance depends on the actual connection and conditions where you are using it.
