For most Windows 11 users, VLC is the better first-choice player. VideoLAN documents support for most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs and various streaming protocols, and its Windows build runs on Windows 11. That breadth makes VLC the more flexible option for mixed local files, discs and network streams.
Windows Media Player is not one single product on Windows 11. Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional feature whose strengths include music-library management, playlists, album art, audio-CD creation and portable-player synchronization. Microsoft’s newer Media Player app is a separate, current Windows app aimed at modern video and music playback. Microsoft recommends the newer app for contemporary video features such as 4K. The right choice depends on whether format breadth or Microsoft’s library workflow matters more to you.

First, identify which Windows Media Player you mean
Comparisons often use “Windows Media Player” as though it were a single application. On Windows 11, that wording can refer to two distinct products.
Windows Media Player Legacy
Legacy is the familiar desktop program descended from earlier Windows releases. Microsoft lists it as an optional Windows feature on Windows 10 and Windows 11 rather than as the default modern video app. Its documented feature set includes library organization, playlists, metadata such as album art, audio-CD creation, transferring content to portable players and streaming content. Those functions make it relevant to people who maintain a music collection rather than simply opening individual video files.

The newer Media Player app
The newer Media Player app is Microsoft’s current built-in media experience. Microsoft distinguishes it from Legacy and recommends it for modern video features, including a 4K use case. It should therefore be treated as a separate option in any Windows 11 comparison. Installing or enabling Legacy does not turn it into the newer app, and choosing the newer app does not provide every Legacy library feature.

|---|---|---|
| Windows Media Player Legacy | Optional Windows 10/11 desktop feature | Music libraries, playlists, album art, CD creation and portable-player transfers |
| Media Player app | Microsoft’s newer current app | Built-in contemporary video playback, including Microsoft’s documented 4K scenario |

This is a feature-based decision, not a benchmark result. The available official documentation does not establish which player opens files faster, consumes less CPU or memory, lasts longer on battery or produces better image quality on a particular PC.
Does VLC play more formats than Windows Media Player?
VLC has the broader documented starting point. VideoLAN describes it as “a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.” That wording supports a practical conclusion: VLC is the more versatile first player when your collection contains assorted containers, codecs, discs or streams.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Most” is not “everything.” A protected stream, damaged file, unusual hardware codec or unsupported encryption scheme can still fail. VLC’s broad support also does not prove that it will decode every file on every Windows 11 device. Treat it as a strong compatibility choice, not a guarantee.
Microsoft’s players use the codecs and media components available on the PC. Microsoft Support states: “If Windows Media Player can’t play a file or shows an error, the required codec might not be installed or supported.” The same principle applies when the newer Media Player app reports a format error: identify the codec and Windows build before assuming the application itself is defective.
Containers, codecs and extensions: why the file ending is not enough
A filename extension such as .mkv, .mp4 or .avi identifies a container, not necessarily the video or audio codec inside it. Two files with the same extension can require different decoders. A player may open the container while failing on one embedded stream, or it may support the codec but lack a required Windows component.
Formats Microsoft lists as built in
Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance lists these common out-of-box audio formats: MP3, MP2, AAC, M4A, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, WMA, 3GP, 3G2 and AMR. Its listed out-of-box video formats include MPEG-4/H.264, H.263, VC-1, WMV, DV, VP8 and Motion JPEG.

Those lists describe Microsoft’s documented support, not a promise about every Windows 11 installation. Device manufacturers, Windows editions, updates and installed components can change the result. Microsoft also notes that codec support can be queried at runtime for a specific device, which is why a general list cannot establish the exact configuration of your PC.
Formats Microsoft identifies as optional extensions
| Format or codec family | What Microsoft documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MPEG-2 | Available through an optional Microsoft Store extension. | Whether the extension is installed and compatible with your Windows build. |
| HEVC/H.265 | Available through an optional Microsoft Store extension. | The extension, device support and the file’s actual profile. |
| VP9 | Available through an optional Microsoft Store extension. | Installed extension and hardware or software decoding support. |
| AV1 | Available through an optional Microsoft Store extension. | Installed extension and whether the PC supports the required decoding path. |
| OGG family | Available through an optional Microsoft Store extension. | Which OGG-based stream is present and whether the extension is installed. |
VLC can reduce this particular setup friction because it ships as a media player designed to handle a wide range of formats itself. It still cannot repair a corrupt file or bypass every protected stream, and a successful VLC playback does not add that codec to Windows for other applications.
The Windows 11 24H2 AC-3 change
AC-3, commonly associated with Dolby Digital audio, needs a specific Windows-version qualification. Microsoft says Windows versions before Windows 11 24H2 include AC-3, while Windows 11 24H2 no longer includes it by default. Some PC manufacturers may preinstall AC-3, and an upgrade from an earlier Windows version may retain it.
Therefore, “Windows 11 cannot play AC-3” is too broad. A 24H2 installation may have AC-3 because the manufacturer supplied it or because the machine was upgraded; another 24H2 installation may not. If a file’s video appears but its audio is silent in a Microsoft player, check whether its audio track is AC-3 and verify the installed Windows components. Trying the same file in VLC can help distinguish a Windows codec-component issue from a damaged file, but it does not change the system’s codec inventory.

Local files, discs and network streams
When your priority is varied local files
Choose VLC first if you routinely receive files from different cameras, download sources, operating systems or editing tools. Its documented breadth means fewer decisions about which optional Windows extension a particular file needs. Keep the limitation in mind: unusual profiles, damaged indexes, DRM and encrypted content can still fail.
When you use DVDs, Audio CDs or VCDs
VideoLAN explicitly lists DVDs, Audio CDs and VCDs among VLC’s supported media. That makes VLC the clearer single application for a mixed disc-and-file collection. Windows Media Player Legacy may still fit a Windows-centered music workflow, but the exact result depends on the disc type and installed Windows media components.
When you watch network streams
VideoLAN lists various streaming protocols as part of VLC’s capabilities. The supplied Microsoft material emphasizes local format and codec support rather than establishing equivalent protocol coverage for either Windows player. If your use case is a network stream, check the stream’s protocol, authentication and protection separately from the player choice.

Music libraries and everyday organization
Legacy’s strongest documented advantage is organization rather than raw playback breadth. Microsoft describes a library that can manage music, playlists and metadata such as album art. It also documents creating audio CDs, transferring content to portable players and streaming content.
That workflow matters if you want one place to browse albums, correct tags, build playlists and send music to a device. VLC remains useful for opening individual files and unusual formats, but the evidence supplied here does not establish a matching library-management feature set. The newer Media Player app is Microsoft’s current application, yet the supplied documentation does not establish that it reproduces every Legacy function.
How to install or enable each option on Windows 11
Enable Windows Media Player Legacy
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Optional features.
- Use View features or Add an optional feature, depending on the current Windows 11 label.
- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy, select it and choose Next, then Add.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it, then launch Legacy from the Start menu.
Microsoft’s labels can change between Windows 11 builds. If the feature is not listed, confirm that you are using a supported Windows edition and that Windows Update is working. On a managed PC, an administrator may control optional-feature installation.
Use the newer Media Player app
- Open the Start menu and search for Media Player.
- Launch the app that is labeled Media Player, not Windows Media Player Legacy.
- If it is missing or outdated, open the Microsoft Store and check for updates to the Media Player app.
- Open a known-good file first, then test the file that caused the problem.
This app is Microsoft’s current built-in choice for modern video scenarios. Its availability and exact interface can vary by Windows build.
Install VLC
- Obtain the Windows installer from VideoLAN’s official VLC download page.
- Choose the Windows build appropriate for your PC and run the installer.
- Review the file-association choices instead of automatically taking over every media extension.
- Open VLC and use Media, then Open File, or drag a file into the player window.
- For a disc, insert it and use VLC’s Media menu to select the disc source.
VideoLAN states that its Windows build runs on Windows 11. Keep the installer source official and update VLC through its normal release process.
Windows N editions require an extra check
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions exclude Windows Media Player and related media technologies by default. Microsoft identifies the Media Feature Pack as the way to restore those technologies.
- Open Settings and go to System, then About.
- Check the Windows edition. If it ends in N, assume the media stack needs verification.
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features > View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack, select it and install it.
- Restart Windows and test the Microsoft player again.
VLC may still play many files on an N edition because it supplies its own playback application, but installing VLC does not restore Windows components that other applications depend on. If you need system-wide media features, install the Media Feature Pack and then re-test.

Which player should you choose?
Choose VLC when breadth is the priority
- You want one application for varied local files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs and supported streams.
- You frequently encounter files using codecs that Windows does not have enabled by default.
- You do not want to identify and install a separate extension for every new format.
- You are troubleshooting whether a failure is specific to a Microsoft codec component.
Choose Windows Media Player Legacy when library tools are central
- You maintain a tagged music collection and want Microsoft’s documented library and playlist workflow.
- You use album art, audio-CD creation or portable-player transfer.
- Your files already play with the codecs installed on your PC.
- You specifically want the Legacy desktop application and are comfortable enabling it as an optional feature.
Choose the newer Media Player app for Microsoft’s current video experience
- You want the current Microsoft app rather than the optional Legacy program.
- You are interested in the modern video features Microsoft associates with the app, including its documented 4K scenario.
- You prefer a built-in Windows application and your files use codecs already supported by the system.
A practical test before changing your default player
- Write down the file extension and, if possible, inspect the file with a media-information utility to identify the video and audio codecs.
- Check your Windows edition and version in Settings > System > About. Record whether the build is Windows 11 24H2 and whether the edition is N.
- Open a known-good MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio. This separates a general player-launch problem from a format-specific problem.
- Open the problem file in the newer Media Player app, Windows Media Player Legacy if enabled, and VLC.
- Compare the exact symptom: failure to open, video without audio, audio without video, stuttering, or a stream that never connects.
- Use the symptom and codec information to select the fix below rather than installing random codec packs.
Troubleshooting playback failures
The Microsoft player says a codec is missing
- Identify the actual codec, not just the extension.
- Check Microsoft’s listed optional extensions for HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1, MPEG-2 or OGG-family media.
- Install only the extension that matches the file and your Windows build.
- Close and reopen the player, then test the file again.
- If the machine is Windows N, install the Media Feature Pack and restart first.
Video plays but audio is missing
Check the audio stream’s codec. On Windows 11 24H2, AC-3 may be absent unless the manufacturer supplied it or an earlier upgrade retained it. Test a file with a known AAC or MP3 track to see whether audio works generally. If only AC-3 files fail, the issue is likely the available decoder rather than the video container.
Neither player opens the file
- Confirm that the file is complete and not still being copied.
- Try another file from the same source.
- Check whether the media is encrypted or protected.
- Inspect the codec and profile; a supported container can still hold an unsupported stream.
- Try VLC to distinguish a missing Windows component from a damaged or unusual file.
A disc or stream fails
Confirm that the disc is readable and that the drive is visible to Windows. For streams, verify the protocol, address, authentication and protection requirements. VLC’s documented protocol and disc support does not guarantee access to every protected source.

What the available evidence does not prove
There is no supported comparative figure here for startup speed, CPU use, RAM consumption, battery life, hardware-acceleration efficiency, picture quality or market share. Those results vary with the Windows build, graphics driver, file codec, resolution, display, settings and hardware. A claim that one player is universally faster, lighter or sharper would require a dated, reproducible test on specified equipment.
The same caution applies to “supports MKV” or “supports HEVC.” The container name alone is incomplete, and Microsoft’s runtime codec note means two Windows 11 PCs can have different playback capabilities. Use the actual file’s streams and the actual PC’s installed components as the deciding evidence.
Bottom line for Windows 11
Install VLC first if your main concern is broad compatibility across local files, optical discs and supported streams. Enable Windows Media Player Legacy when its music-library and device-management features are more valuable than format breadth. Use the newer Media Player app when you want Microsoft’s current built-in video experience, including the 4K scenario Microsoft documents.
Before blaming either player, check the Windows edition, Windows 11 version, file codecs and optional extensions. The 24H2 AC-3 change and the special requirements of Windows N editions can explain failures that look like application bugs.
