For one free desktop player that handles a wide mix of media without much setup, VLC is a sensible starting point. mpv is a strong alternative if you want extensive configuration and are comfortable with a more technical workflow; Windows Media Player 12 fits common playback needs in Windows, though some formats may depend on separately installed codecs. There is no universal winner: choose based on the files you play, your operating system, and how much control you want.

Choose VLC for a broad built-in feature set
VideoLAN describes VLC as a “free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework” in its user documentation. Its features page lists a wide range of inputs, formats, subtitle support, hardware decoding, synchronization, and filters. That breadth makes VLC a practical first choice when your library includes different kinds of files or you want to play from sources beyond local files.

VideoLAN’s broad wording about format support should not be read as a guarantee that every file will work on every computer. An unusual encoding, damaged file, or system-specific issue can still prevent playback.

Choose mpv when you want more control
The mpv project describes its player as free, open source, and cross-platform, with broad support for media formats, codecs, and subtitles. Its reference manual puts command-line options and configuration files front and center. That makes mpv attractive if you want to adjust playback behavior in detail; it is not evidence that mpv is easier for every user. If you prefer a guided, out-of-the-box desktop experience, VLC may be the more straightforward starting point.
VLC vs. Windows Media Player: broad support or Windows familiarity?
Windows Media Player 12 has a documented list of common media types, including AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4-family formats, AAC, MPEG-2 TS, and FLAC. Microsoft cautions that additional formats might be supported after installing codecs. So it can suit everyday playback in Windows, but a file that fails to open may require checking codec availability rather than assuming the player supports every encoding.

VLC is the stronger option to try when you want a player whose published feature list covers a broader range of inputs and playback features. Windows Media Player 12 remains a reasonable choice if your needs are mostly common formats and you value a familiar Windows environment. Microsoft’s page concerns Windows Media Player 12 specifically; do not assume its list applies unchanged to other player versions or Windows media apps.

How to choose for your playback habits
- Choose VLC if you need one free, cross-platform player for varied files, discs, devices, webcams, or streams, and want features such as subtitle handling and playback filters.
- Choose mpv if configuration and detailed control matter more than a conventional, immediately approachable workflow.
- Choose Windows Media Player 12 if you use Windows and mostly play common formats, while accepting that additional codecs may be needed for some files.
How to check a file that will not play
- Identify the file and player. Note the file extension and the exact player and operating-system version. An extension alone does not establish which codec or encoding is inside the file.
- Try the file in the player that matches your needs. VLC’s official features page lists broad format and input support; mpv documents wide media support; Microsoft’s supported-types list is specifically for Windows Media Player 12.
- For Windows Media Player 12, check codec requirements. Microsoft says codecs can enable additional formats, so confirm whether the file requires a codec not available on your system.
- Check the file itself. If it fails in more than one player, the file may be incomplete, damaged, or encoded in an unsupported way. Compare with a known-good file before concluding that a player is the cause.
What the published feature lists can—and cannot—tell you
Official documentation is useful for understanding stated formats, inputs, and controls, but it does not establish which player is fastest, produces the best picture or sound, or is easiest for a particular person. The available product descriptions also do not provide a controlled, side-by-side compatibility test. For an important or unusual file, try the specific file on your own system rather than relying on a universal compatibility claim.
