Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First check where the Hindi text appears: in a local file name or path, in a YouTube video title, or in both. These are different problems, and the available VideoLAN guidance does not identify a single Hindi-specific fix. If VLC cannot play the YouTube stream itself, update VLC first; if local files are being skipped, investigate their paths and playlist entries separately.
Identify what VLC is skipping
In the playlist, note whether each skipped entry points to a file on your device or to a YouTube video. A local path containing Devanagari characters is not the same as a remote YouTube title written in Hindi. Also check whether the skipped entry remains visible: a visible item that fails to play suggests a playback problem, while an item that cannot be found may indicate a path or playlist-resolution problem. These are diagnostic distinctions, not a confirmed diagnosis of your setup.

- Local file: Check that the file exists at the path recorded in the playlist and that the path is still valid on this device.
- YouTube item: Check whether VLC can play other YouTube entries. If it cannot play the stream, follow the YouTube playback branch below.
- Both: Test a local Hindi-named file and a YouTube item independently so that one failure does not get mistaken for the other.
Keep track of your operating system, VLC version, playlist format, and whether the affected item is local or remote. The right next step depends on those details.

If VLC cannot play the YouTube stream
VideoLAN’s VLC User Documentation says, “Due to changes in transmission protocols of Youtube, some files become obsolete and VLC is unable to stream youtube videos.” Its first recommendation is: “Be sure you have the latest version of VLC.” That guidance concerns YouTube playback generally; it does not say that the same issue causes Hindi-named local files to be skipped. Read VideoLAN’s VLC user documentation.

Update VLC first
- Check the VLC version installed on your device and update it using the appropriate official VLC download or your operating system’s supported package source.
- Restart VLC and test the same YouTube playlist item again.
- If YouTube playback still fails, note your operating system and VLC build before changing playlist files. Package layouts and YouTube behavior can change, so confirm that any script you download is compatible with your installation.
Replace the YouTube playlist script only for a YouTube playback failure
VideoLAN documents replacing youtube.lua when updating VLC does not resolve YouTube playback. Its procedure is to download the script from the location linked on its documentation page, close VLC, open the playlist-script directory for the operating system, remove any existing youtube.luac and/or youtube.lua, and place the downloaded file in that directory. The documentation lists locations for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows, macOS, and 64-bit and 32-bit Linux. Check VideoLAN’s current instructions and platform paths before proceeding.
Do not use this as a presumed fix for local files whose paths contain Hindi characters: VideoLAN’s YouTube-script advice addresses YouTube playback, not local filename handling.

If local files with Hindi names are skipped
Start with the playlist entry, not the YouTube script. Confirm that the file is still at the listed location, that the playlist points to the correct path on this device, and that the playlist format and path references are supported by the VLC installation. If possible, open the affected file directly in VLC; this can help distinguish a path-resolution problem from an issue that occurs only when VLC advances through the playlist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVLC project release notes have recorded separate historical fixes, including “Fix for invalid UTF-8 encoding of some filenames” and a fix for opening DVD folders with non-ASCII characters. They also contain separate YouTube playback and script fixes. These entries do not establish that a current VLC version has a Hindi filename defect, that the Hindi characters are the cause in your case, or which version would fix it. What to report if the problem persists
For a useful diagnosis, record the following before asking for help:
- Your operating system and VLC version/build.
- The playlist format and whether the entry points to a local file or a YouTube video.
- Whether the Hindi text is in the local path, the remote title, or both.
- Whether VLC can open the local file directly, and whether other YouTube entries play.
- Whether the affected entry is visible in the playlist and what happens when you select it.
This information narrows the issue without assuming that a historical filename fix or a YouTube script change applies to every setup.
