Codec and subtitle support
The project lists support for HEVC (H.265), VVC (H.266), and AV1 video, AC-4 audio, and WebVTT subtitles. It also documents improved subtitle rendering through libass. Support for a format in the project’s list does not guarantee that every file in that format plays correctly, because files also depend on container, encoding settings, and the codecs installed on your system. For a broad codec set, the project suggests K-Lite Codec Pack as an all-in-one option, particularly for automatic file associations and configuration. It is optional software, not a requirement.

Setting up HDR playback
HDR depends on the video renderer, not just the player. The project directs users to choose a renderer that supports HDR. The steps below follow the project’s guidance:
- Confirm you are running the stable 2.8.2 build, not a development build.
- Open MPC-HC’s options and go to the playback output settings.
- Select MPC Video Renderer. It is included with MPC-HC, and the release page describes it as the recommended default for modern systems, with Dolby Vision support.
- If you prefer madVR, install it separately, then select it in the same output settings. madVR is not bundled.
- Avoid other renderers for HDR. The release notes warn that other renderers can produce incorrect colors.
- Play an HDR file to check whether highlights and shadows look right on your display.
Setting up YouTube and website playback
Website playback is an optional, configured feature. It does not work out of the box. The project’s documentation describes the following prerequisites:

- Install yt-dlp and point MPC-HC to it through the online-playback settings in its options.
- Install ffmpeg if you want the best-quality downloads, since the project recommends it for yt-dlp output.
- Test with a single video before relying on the setup. If playback fails, check that the redistributable is installed and that the yt-dlp path is correct.
Who should choose MPC-HC, and who should not
MPC-HC is a good fit if you use Windows, want a familiar window with menus, and need practical controls such as resume, speed, A-B repeat, and subtitle search without learning a configuration language. It is also a reasonable choice if you want HDR with a renderer the project recommends.

Choose something else if your needs fall outside those lines:
- You use macOS or Linux, where MPC-HC is not a supported option.
- You want a player that handles discs or streams as a central use case, where VLC’s documented breadth is the stronger match.
- You want deep scripting and a minimal, highly customized setup, where mpv’s design is built for that.
- You want the simplest possible setup for web video without installing extra components.
For most Windows users who find VLC busy and mpv too spartan, MPC-HC is a credible middle option. Treat it as a strong default for local video, with the setup steps above for HDR and web playback.
