In 2026, however, its aging chipset, 4G-only modem, uncertain update status and worn batteries make it a poor choice as a new phone near its original price. Confirm the exact model and regional bands before buying: “Y51” is also used for the Y51A, Y51s and an older unrelated handset.
Which Vivo Y51 is this?
This article covers the Vivo Y51 launched in December 2020, not every phone carrying the Y51 name. Vivo Indonesia announced this model on December 8, 2020 (Vivo Indonesia announcement).

Resolving the Snapdragon dispute
The commonly documented 2020 Y51 uses Snapdragon 665. Vivo’s global and India pages identify that chip, while some regional pages place Snapdragon 662 under a Y51 heading—likely reflecting the Y51A or a regional labeling issue. Treat Snapdragon 665 as the standard 2020 specification, but verify the model number and market before buying.
LCD, not AMOLED
The panel is an FHD+ LCD/IPS display. It offers useful sharpness for reading and video, but LCD blacks and contrast do not match an OLED or AMOLED panel. Vivo’s cited pages do not establish a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate, so those figures should not be assumed.
Design, display and storage
The large 6.58-inch 2408 × 1080 screen gives the Y51 a comfortable viewing area, while the 8.38mm body and 188g weight are moderate for a 5,000mAh phone. The side fingerprint reader is integrated into the power-button area. USB-C, dual-SIM support in relevant configurations and a dedicated microSD slot are practical advantages.

Vivo advertises expansion up to 1TB, but that is a maximum card capacity, not built-in storage. Compatibility can depend on the regional hardware and card; applications may still need internal space, and a microSD card does not make app performance faster.
Performance in everyday use
Snapdragon 665 is an 11nm mid-range platform from 2019. With nominal 8GB RAM, the Y51 is suitable for calls, messaging, email, navigation, web browsing, streaming and moderate multitasking. Older or less demanding games should be used at sensible settings. It should not be compared with current mid-range processors, and no independent 2026 benchmark or frame-rate result is established by the cited specifications.
Gaming claim in context
Vivo advertises up to 7.26 hours of PUBG under laboratory conditions using a 4G connection, 150-nit brightness, 63dB volume and default settings (Vivo test disclosure). Actual endurance changes with brightness, temperature, network quality, game settings, battery age and background activity.

Cameras
Hardware and useful modes
- 48MP primary rear camera
- 8MP ultrawide camera
- 2MP macro camera
- 16MP front-facing camera
Vivo says the 48MP mode must be enabled manually. The ultrawide camera is the more useful secondary lens for groups and landscapes; the 2MP macro camera has limited detail by modern standards. Vivo also markets “Ultra Stable Video,” but the cited product page does not establish its exact resolution, frame-rate combinations or stabilization method. Do not infer flagship night photography, 4K stabilization or exceptional dynamic range from the megapixel counts alone.
Battery and charging
The 5,000mAh typical battery is one of the Y51’s strongest specifications. Wired charging is rated up to 18W. Vivo’s other controlled claims include up to 14.3 hours of online HD video and 70% charge in 67 minutes; these are laboratory results, not guaranteed real-world figures. Reverse charging is supported through an OTG cable, which Vivo says must be purchased separately.
On a used phone, battery condition matters more than the original rating. Look for unexpected shutdowns, rapid percentage drops, heat during charging, a loose USB-C port, an incompatible charger or a rear cover separating from the chassis. A replacement battery’s quality and service availability vary by country, so replacement does not guarantee original endurance.

Software and update outlook
The Y51 shipped with Android 11 and Funtouch OS 11. Vivo’s current public security and upgrade pages do not provide a clear, model-specific 2026 support commitment for every Y51 regional variant (Vivo security page; Vivo India upgrade page). Check the actual handset at Settings → System update (labels can vary), its security-patch date and Google Play system update. Also confirm that banking, authentication and workplace apps support the installed software.

LTE bands vary by market. The India listing includes bands 1, 3, 5, 8, 38, 40 and 41, while the Saudi listing shows a different combination including 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 28. Therefore there is no single universally compatible Y51.
US buyers should not trust an “unlocked” label by itself. Verify the exact model identifier, LTE bands, VoLTE and carrier certification, Wi-Fi calling and emergency-calling behavior with the intended carrier. 3G shutdowns can also affect older imported devices. A phone that works in India, Indonesia or Saudi Arabia may not work reliably on a US network.

Conflicting listings and price context
Some databases merge Y51 variants. For example, a current Gadgets 360 page shows Android 10, a 4,500mAh battery and four rear cameras, conflicting with Vivo’s official Android 11, 5,000mAh and triple-camera specifications (Gadgets 360 listing; Vivo global page). Use official regional specifications and the handset’s model number to resolve such conflicts.
India launch coverage reported an introductory price of ₹17,990 for 8GB/128GB (launch report). Vivo India later displayed an MRP of ₹21,990, but the listing is marked unavailable (official store listing). Neither figure is a reliable 2026 used-market valuation.
Should you buy the Vivo Y51 in 2026?
It can make sense when
- You already own one and need a capable basic LTE phone.
- A clean used unit is inexpensive and passes hardware, battery and account checks.
- You value 128GB storage, microSD expansion, dual SIM, a headphone/audio setup and a large battery.
- You can verify carrier compatibility and accept uncertain software longevity.
Look elsewhere when
- You need 5G, long-term security updates or current gaming performance.
- You want an AMOLED or high-refresh-rate display.
- You need guaranteed US-carrier operation.
- You are paying near the old official price for supposedly new stock.
- You require known battery health or a warranty.
Compare any asking price with newer 4G or 5G budget phones and used 2022–2024 mid-range devices. Their prices and support can vary by country, so a universal “fair price” cannot be stated without a live local market check.
Used-buying checklist
- Open Settings → About phone; confirm Y51 (2020), model number, Snapdragon 665 claim, RAM and storage.
- Test both SIM slots, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB-C, microphone, speaker and headphone output where fitted.
- Open every camera, test autofocus and inspect the screen for dead zones, ghost touches or damage.
- Enroll and remove a fingerprint; confirm the reader works consistently.
- Charge with an 18W-compatible charger and watch for heat, instability or a loose port.
- Check battery drain, swelling, rear-cover separation and unexpected shutdowns.
- Verify IMEI status, carrier bands, VoLTE and account-lock removal.
- Insert a microSD card if expansion is important; “up to 1TB” does not guarantee every card works.
- Check the security-patch date and available system updates.
- Confirm charger authenticity, return rights and any local Vivo service coverage.
Final verdict
The Vivo Y51 (2020) is a reasonably equipped older phone, not a modern all-rounder. Its 5,000mAh battery, 128GB storage, microSD support, FHD+ screen and adequate basic performance remain useful in a low-cost used device. The Snapdragon 665, 4G-only connectivity, LCD panel, aging software and uncertain battery condition make it difficult to justify as a new purchase in 2026. Buy only after confirming the exact variant, regional network compatibility and the individual phone’s condition.
