Use Vite+’s vp pack when you want library packaging integrated with a Vite+ project; use tsup when you want a small, standalone esbuild-based CLI with almost no configuration. Both can bundle TypeScript, emit declarations, and rebuild while you edit. The practical differences are the surrounding toolchain, configuration model, declaration workflow, output controls, and the maintenance signal around tsup.
The short decision
For a new library that already uses Vite+, put packaging in the pack block of vite.config.ts and run vp pack. Vite+ Pack is an integrated entry point built around tsdown and is designed to cover declarations, JavaScript formats, source maps, minification, and watch mode in one configuration.

For a small package that does not need the rest of Vite+, tsup remains the more direct command-line experience. Its documented commands are short, it is powered by esbuild, and --dts and --watch cover the two features most library authors need immediately. However, the current tsup npm listing identifies version 8.5.1 and says, “This project is not actively maintained anymore. Please consider using tsdown instead.” That is a maintenance warning, not proof that existing tsup builds have stopped working.

What Vite+ Pack does for a library
Vite+ separates application building from library packaging. Use vp build for a Vite application build; use vp pack when the deliverable is a publishable library or standalone executable. Confusing those commands is a common source of an otherwise successful build that produces the wrong package shape.

Pack configuration belongs in the pack property of vite.config.ts. A minimal configuration that emits declarations, ESM and CommonJS, and source maps is:
import { defineConfig } from 'vite-plus';
export default defineConfig({
pack: {
dts: true,
format: ['esm', 'cjs'],
sourcemap: true,
},
});
With that configuration, the normal build is:
vp pack
You can also supply an entry directly and request declarations for that invocation:
vp pack src/index.ts --dts
For an edit-and-rebuild loop, use:
vp pack --watch
Pack’s documented feature set includes declaration files, multiple output formats, source maps, minification, and watch mode. The important operational advantage is that those concerns live beside the rest of a Vite+ project rather than in a second, unrelated configuration system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How tsup approaches the same job
tsup is intentionally narrower: its official documentation describes a no-config TypeScript bundler powered by esbuild. You give it an entry point and add flags for the output behavior you need.
A declaration-producing build looks like this:
tsup src/index.ts --dts
That command emits declaration files alongside the JavaScript output. A watch build is equally direct:
tsup src/index.ts --watch
This model is attractive when the package has one or a few obvious entry points and you do not want to introduce a project-level Vite configuration just to bundle a library. It also makes the command easy to put in a package script, where the entry point and flags are visible in one place.
The trade-off is that the CLI is the center of your packaging setup. As entry points, formats, declaration rules, or integration requirements grow, you must manage those choices in tsup’s configuration and package metadata rather than inheriting an integrated Vite+ pipeline.

Declaration files: what each command actually guarantees
Vite+ Pack declarations
Set dts: true in the pack block, or use the documented --dts form when invoking a specific pack command. Pack then includes declaration generation as part of the same library build that creates JavaScript, source maps, and the selected formats.
That integration helps keep the declaration output aligned with the entry point and package build. It does not remove the need to inspect the published package: verify that the declaration files are present, that their paths match the package’s export map, and that consumers can resolve the types from a clean install.
tsup declarations
tsup’s --dts option emits declarations alongside the JavaScript output. The tsup documentation cautions that declarations generated by tools other than tsc are not guaranteed to be error-free and recommends checking the published output. Treat that warning as part of the release process, not as an optional cleanup step.
At minimum, inspect the generated .d.ts files and run a consumer-oriented type check against the packed artifact. A successful bundling process only proves that the bundler completed; it does not prove that every public type is importable, that private paths were not leaked, or that the declaration graph matches the JavaScript entry points.

A declaration validation checklist
- Build from a clean directory so stale declarations cannot hide missing files.
- Open the generated declarations and confirm that every intended public entry point has a corresponding type file.
- Check package exports and the types field against the actual generated paths.
- Install or pack the library as a consumer would, then run a TypeScript check that imports the public API.
- Look for references to source-only aliases, private files, or dependencies that are not available to consumers.
Bundling, formats, maps, and dependencies
Vite+ Pack exposes the library concerns that tend to become important as a package matures. Its documented configuration covers ESM and CommonJS output, source maps, declaration generation, minification, and watch mode. The example above requests both esm and cjs formats and source maps explicitly; declaration generation is enabled with dts: true.
Choosing both ESM and CommonJS is a compatibility decision, not a requirement for every package. If your consumers are modern ESM-only applications, an extra CommonJS artifact increases release surface and test cases. If older Node.js consumers or tools still require CommonJS, emitting both can avoid breakage. Whichever formats you publish, test the actual package entry points rather than assuming that a successful bundler run proves that Node.js, bundlers, and TypeScript will all resolve them identically.
Source maps are useful when consumers need stack traces that point back to TypeScript. They also add files to the published package and should be checked for correct source paths. Minification is most relevant when the library is shipped to browsers or when package size is a priority; readable, unminified output can be preferable for a server-side package that is routinely debugged from installed dependencies.

Dependencies require an explicit policy. A dependency that should remain a consumer-installed module must not accidentally be folded into the bundle, while a small runtime dependency that is intended to travel with the library may be bundled. Review the generated JavaScript, package exports, and install-time dependency declarations together. Plain Vite’s library guide makes the externalization requirement explicit: dependencies that should not be bundled must be externalized, and the choice affects the resulting formats and CSS behavior.
Plain Vite library mode is not the same as Vite+ Pack
Vite itself has a build.lib mode. The official Vite guide presents it as a simple, opinionated option for browser-oriented and JavaScript framework libraries. It can emit multiple formats and CSS, but you are responsible for externalizing dependencies that should remain outside the bundle.
That mode is a natural fit when the library is closely connected to a browser demo or framework build and you already understand Vite’s application configuration. It is not a reason to replace vp pack with vp build: in Vite+, vp pack is the library-oriented command.
For advanced or non-browser library workflows, Vite’s guide points toward tsdown or Rolldown directly. Vite+ Pack gives that direction a first-class command and configuration surface while retaining the surrounding Vite+ setup.
Watch mode in day-to-day development
Vite+ Pack
Run vp pack --watch to rebuild the library after source changes. Keep a separate consumer, test runner, or example application pointed at the built package so each rebuild exercises the artifact that will actually be published.

Run tsup src/index.ts --watch. tsup keeps watching the files resolved by the build after the initial compilation. Its documented default ignores include dist, node_modules, and .git, which prevents common feedback loops and avoids traversing installed dependencies.

Watch mode is a rebuild mechanism, not a release validator. A fast loop can still conceal declaration errors, incorrect export maps, or a package that only works because the consumer is importing directly from the source tree. Periodically stop the watcher and run a clean production build and consumer type check.
Which watcher feels better?
- Choose Vite+ when the watcher needs to sit beside Vite application, test, and project configuration.
- Choose tsup when a single entry command and esbuild’s quick rebuild loop are more valuable than integrated project configuration.
- In either case, make the watched output the same directory and format layout used by the package’s publish step.
Maintenance and migration considerations
The tsup maintenance warning
The current npm listing for tsup identifies version 8.5.1 and states that the project is not actively maintained, recommending tsdown. This should influence decisions about a new long-lived library, especially if you expect to depend on fixes for newer TypeScript syntax, module-resolution behavior, or bundler integration.
It does not mean that every existing tsup project must be migrated immediately. A stable package with pinned dependencies, passing release checks, and no new requirements can continue running its current build while the team evaluates alternatives. Record the warning in the project’s maintenance plan and avoid treating an unmaintained tool as if it had a normal forward-compatibility promise.
Moving an existing setup into Vite+
Vite+ provides a migration command intended to consolidate separate Vite, Vitest, tsdown, and tsup setups into a unified vite.config.ts. Its migration rules document changes to pack options and declaration-generator settings.
Migration should be reviewed as a build-system change, not accepted as a blind rewrite:
- Commit the existing configuration, package scripts, lockfile, and a known-good published-package check.
- Run the Vite+ migration command in the project that contains the current setup.
- Review every generated change in
vite.config.ts, package scripts, output paths, format settings, and declaration options. - Build from a clean directory and compare JavaScript, source maps, and declarations with the previous release.
- Run the project’s type checks, tests, export-map checks, and a consumer install before publishing.
The migration rules are useful because option names and declaration-generator settings can change during consolidation. The generated configuration is a starting point; the release checks decide whether the package is actually equivalent.

The wrong command produces an application build
Symptom: You ran vp build and received an application-oriented output instead of the library artifacts your package metadata expects.
Best Value
Fix: Use vp pack for the library. Keep vp build for the Vite application, and reserve vp build --watch for watching that application.
Declarations are missing from the package
Symptom: JavaScript files exist, but consumers receive no types or TypeScript cannot resolve them.
Fix: Enable dts: true in Vite+ Pack or pass --dts to tsup. Then inspect the packed artifact and align the package’s type and export paths with the generated files.
Generated declarations contain unusable paths
Symptom: The build succeeds, but a consumer type check fails on an import that worked inside the repository.
Fix: Test from a clean consumer installation, remove source-only aliases from the public type surface, and verify that every referenced dependency is available through the published package. tsup’s documentation explicitly warns that non-tsc declaration generation is not guaranteed error-free.
The watcher rebuilds endlessly
Symptom: A rebuild writes files that trigger another rebuild.
Fix: Keep generated output outside the source tree when possible. tsup’s default ignored paths include dist, node_modules, and .git; check custom watch settings and Vite+ configuration if your output directory is still being observed.
A configuration change appears to do nothing
Symptom: You edit build configuration while a watch process is running, but subsequent output still uses the old setting.
Fix: Stop and restart the build command. Vite documents this requirement for configuration changes and configuration dependencies in build watch mode.
Choosing by project shape
Choose Vite+ Pack when
- The repository already uses Vite+ and you want one project configuration for application and library concerns.
- You need a deliberate package pipeline covering declarations, ESM/CommonJS output, source maps, minification, and watch mode.
- You are consolidating separate Vite, Vitest, tsdown, or tsup setups and want the documented migration path.
- You prefer the tsdown/Rolldown-oriented direction for a new, actively maintained toolchain.
Choose tsup when
- You need a focused CLI for a small library and want to start with an entry file and a few flags.
- Your existing tsup build is stable, its output is tested, and migration would add risk without solving a current problem.
- Your team values esbuild’s simple command-line workflow more than integration with Vite project configuration.
Consider plain Vite library mode when
- The package is primarily a browser or framework library tied closely to a Vite demo or application.
- You need Vite’s library-mode handling for formats and CSS and are prepared to make dependency externalization decisions explicitly.
A release checklist that works with either tool
- Build from a clean checkout or remove the previous output directory.
- Confirm the intended entry points and output formats in the generated files.
- Verify declaration files and run a consumer-oriented TypeScript check.
- Inspect source maps if they are published, including their source paths.
- Check that runtime dependencies are either correctly externalized and declared or intentionally bundled.
- Test ESM and CommonJS entry points separately when both are published.
- Pack or install the artifact as a consumer would instead of testing only repository-relative imports.
- Run the watch command during development, but perform a separate clean production build before release.
Bottom line
For a Vite+ project, vp pack is the clearest library path: it keeps packaging in vite.config.ts and exposes declarations, formats, maps, minification, and watch mode through the integrated toolchain. For a deliberately small standalone build, tsup’s tsup src/index.ts --dts and --watch commands remain easy to understand and run. The deciding factor for a new project is maintenance as much as convenience: tsup’s current npm warning points toward tsdown, while Vite+ offers a documented route for consolidating and reviewing a modern packaging setup.
