What visual monitoring checks—and what it does not

- If you want to monitor configured URLs without adding code or installation, evaluate Percy’s advertised Visual Scanner separately. Confirm its current browser and device coverage.
- If you need both, ask each vendor to demonstrate the exact capture paths and review process in your intended plan. Product descriptions alone do not establish equivalent workflows.
Match the product to the surfaces you need
List required browsers, responsive widths, real mobile browsers, web pages, native or desktop applications, and PDFs. Percy’s documentation describes browser-specific output and screenshot-based usage; Applitools claims desktop and PDF coverage as well as web and mobile. Verify that your exact surface and configuration are supported before treating either as a fit.

Test the maintenance burden, not only the first diff
Use representative pages with dynamic content, custom fonts, animations, and both expected and unexpected design changes. Percy describes snapshot stabilization options such as freezing animations and managing custom fonts. Applitools describes match levels and grouped changes. A practical evaluation plan
- Choose representative pages: include a stable page, one with changing content, and a responsive page with a meaningful mobile layout.
- Define the states: record the viewport, browser, data state, fonts, and any interactions needed to reach each screen.
- Include real change cases: evaluate an accidental-looking visual change and an intentional redesign so reviewers can assess both detection and approval work.
