If the message reaches the carrier mailbox but does not appear in the phone app, the problem is usually app integration, mobile-data access, or support for that phone, plan, and region. If the message never reaches the mailbox, investigate voicemail provisioning, account setup, coverage, call forwarding, or a full mailbox with the carrier.
Visual Voicemail is only the phone’s visual way to access a carrier-hosted mailbox. It is not guaranteed on every carrier, plan, device, or country. The exact menu labels and service rules can change with the phone software and carrier.

First identify what actually failed
“Visual voicemail stopped working” can describe several different faults. Separating them prevents you from changing phone settings when the carrier mailbox itself is the problem.
- Messages are missing from the list: callers may have left messages in the carrier mailbox, while the app has not synchronized.
- The voicemail tab or app disappeared: the supported app may have changed, the feature may not be provisioned, or the phone may no longer meet carrier requirements.
- New messages are delayed: the phone may be offline, outside coverage, or unable to use the mobile data required by that carrier’s visual service.
- A message appears but will not play: the app may not have a working carrier connection, or the visual integration may be malfunctioning.
- You cannot leave a message: the mailbox, call forwarding, account, or network may be failing before visual voicemail is involved.
- There is no notification: notification settings can be involved, but first confirm that the message reached the mailbox.
Also check whether ordinary calls work. A phone that cannot register on the carrier network cannot reliably retrieve carrier voicemail, regardless of what the visual app shows.

Test the carrier mailbox before changing phone settings
This is the most useful branch point. A visual list is only a display of messages stored by the carrier, so test that storage independently.
- Use the carrier’s official voicemail access route. The number or code differs by carrier and country. On Verizon, dialing
*86reaches the audio mailbox; that code is not a universal voicemail number. - Use another phone to call your own mobile number if you cannot reach voicemail from the affected phone. Follow the greeting and mailbox prompts.
- Bypass the greeting when required. Apple’s iPhone instructions say to call the mobile number from another phone and press
*or#, depending on the carrier, to enter the voicemail password. The correct key is carrier-dependent. - Leave a new test message. Do not rely only on old messages. T-Mobile’s troubleshooting flow uses a new message to determine whether the carrier mailbox and visual app are communicating.
- Check both locations. First see whether the new message is present when you call the audio mailbox. Then check the visual voicemail app or tab.
Do not erase messages while testing. Apple notes that messages can be erased by the carrier or, in some circumstances, after a SIM change. Save or otherwise preserve important messages before changing the SIM, account, or voicemail configuration.
Use the test result to choose the right repair path

Check the connection and the voicemail app
Confirm the carrier connection
Make a normal call, look for a registered mobile network, and test the voicemail mailbox while the phone has carrier service. If the carrier’s visual service requires mobile data, Wi-Fi alone may not be enough.

Verizon directs customers to enable Cellular Data and connect to its mobile network. Its FAQ also says that changes made while the app is offline may not appear until data coverage returns. This is a Verizon-specific requirement, not a rule that can be applied to every carrier or to every iPhone.
Coverage can fail indoors, underground, while travelling, or during a local outage. If calls also fail, treat the issue as a network or account problem rather than an app-display problem.

Find which Android app is supposed to handle voicemail
Android phones may expose voicemail through Google’s Phone app or through an app supplied by the mobile operator. Do not assume that both should be active at once.
Google’s Phone app help states that when you use the mobile operator’s voicemail app, visual voicemail in the Phone app turns off to avoid a potential conflict. Therefore, a missing tab after installing or activating a carrier app may be an intentional handoff rather than deleted messages.

- Open the app where you normally place calls and look for its voicemail tab or settings.
- Check whether the carrier has installed or enabled a separate voicemail app.
- Use the app identified by the carrier for that phone model and plan.
- Do not install, remove, or switch voicemail apps until you know which integration the carrier supports.
Exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. If the carrier app contains the messages while the Google Phone tab is absent, use the supported carrier app and ask support whether the built-in tab can be enabled for your line.
Distinguish iPhone Visual Voicemail from Live Voicemail
On iPhone, Visual Voicemail appears in Apple’s Phone app when the carrier and region support it. Live Voicemail is different: it transcribes a caller as the caller is leaving a message on the device. A change in Live Voicemail does not prove that carrier Visual Voicemail is available or working.
Apple states that Voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are available only from select carriers in select countries or regions. A missing Visual Voicemail interface can therefore reflect service availability rather than a damaged phone.

Verify setup and account conditions
Make sure the mailbox exists and is initialized
A newly activated line, replacement SIM, ported number, or changed plan may not have a completed voicemail setup. Follow the carrier’s setup prompts when you first open voicemail or call the mailbox. If the mailbox asks for a password or greeting and setup was never completed, visual synchronization may not begin.
Ask the carrier to confirm that voicemail is included on the account and provisioned on the specific line. Eligibility can depend on the plan, device, market, and service type.
Check the mailbox capacity
Verizon lists a full mailbox as one possible reason voicemail fails. Delete unneeded messages only after preserving anything important, then test with a new call. Other carriers may use different limits or retention rules, so do not assume a capacity rule from one carrier applies to another.
Check call forwarding and coverage
Voicemail depends on calls being routed to the mailbox when you do not answer, reject a call, or are unreachable. Verizon identifies call forwarding being on, being outside coverage, and other routing conditions among possible causes of voicemail trouble. The exact forwarding controls differ by carrier; ask support to verify the line’s routing rather than entering a generic forwarding code.
Consider a recent SIM or phone change
A SIM replacement, number transfer, eSIM conversion, or phone upgrade can change how voicemail is provisioned. Apple warns that messages may be erased by the carrier or after a SIM change in some circumstances. Before making another change, preserve important messages and record whether the old phone could still reach the mailbox.

Platform and carrier-specific paths
iPhone
- Open the Phone app and select Voicemail.
- If Visual Voicemail is unavailable, follow the setup or dial-in instructions shown there.
- If the tab cannot retrieve messages, call your own number from another phone and use the carrier-dependent
*or#bypass key when prompted. - Confirm that your carrier and country support Visual Voicemail for the plan and iPhone model.
Apple maintains a carrier feature list for the United States and Canada. That list is geographic and platform-scoped; it should not be generalized to another country, an Android device, or a different plan.
Android
- Determine whether the carrier expects the Google Phone app or its own voicemail app.
- If the carrier app is active, expect the built-in Google Phone visual voicemail feature to turn off to prevent conflict.
- Check that the phone has the mobile connection required by the carrier. For Verizon Android Visual Voicemail, enable Cellular Data and do not rely on Wi-Fi alone.
- Use the carrier’s audio dial-in route if the app is unavailable, then compare the audio mailbox with the visual list.
Because Android interfaces differ by manufacturer and software version, a menu path from one model may not exist on another. The carrier’s instructions for the exact model and plan take precedence.
Verizon
For Verizon, *86 provides audio voicemail access. Verizon’s Android Visual Voicemail requires mobile data and a Verizon mobile-network connection. Its troubleshooting guidance also calls out account eligibility, an uninitialized mailbox, coverage gaps, call forwarding, and a full mailbox. Use those as checks for a Verizon line; they are not universal diagnoses for every carrier.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s troubleshooting approach emphasizes the new-message test: leave a message, verify that it reaches the carrier mailbox, and then see whether the visual app receives it. This separates a carrier-mailbox problem from a phone synchronization problem without deleting settings.

Contact the carrier when audio voicemail fails, when the mailbox works but visual synchronization still fails after the app and data checks, or when the feature disappeared after a device, SIM, plan, or number change.
Give support a compact diagnostic record:
- Phone manufacturer and exact model.
- Operating-system version.
- Carrier, country, and plan name.
- Whether the line was recently activated, ported, upgraded, or moved to a new SIM or eSIM.
- The date the problem began.
- Whether ordinary calls and mobile data work.
- Whether audio voicemail can be reached.
- Whether a newly left test message appears in the audio mailbox.
- Which app is active on Android, or whether the iPhone Phone app shows a Voicemail tab.
- Whether the phone was on mobile data or Wi-Fi during the test.
Ask the carrier to verify four specific items: that the line is eligible for Visual Voicemail, that the feature is provisioned, that the device and plan are supported in your market, and that the mailbox and call routing are functioning. This is more useful than simply reporting that “voicemail is broken.”
Fallback access and precautions
Audio dial-in remains the practical fallback when visual access is unavailable. Use the carrier’s published number or code and follow its password and greeting prompts. Never assume that a code such as *86 works outside the carrier that documents it.
Do not treat a restart, cache clear, network reset, app reinstall, or factory reset as a universal fix. The official guidance covered here does not establish those actions as universal remedies, and resetting or erasing data can remove settings or locally stored information. Only use such a step when the exact phone and carrier documentation calls for it, and understand what the step changes first.
Likewise, a missing visual list does not prove that messages were lost. The carrier mailbox may still contain them, or the phone may simply be using a different supported app. Test the mailbox independently before deleting anything or changing the account.
When the evidence points to an availability limit
If audio voicemail works, the correct app is active, mobile data and coverage meet the carrier’s requirements, and the carrier confirms that the line is provisioned, the remaining explanation may be that Visual Voicemail is not supported for that combination of carrier, plan, device, software, and region.
Apple’s carrier list demonstrates why geography matters: support is listed for specific carriers in the United States and Canada, not as a worldwide promise. Android support is similarly carrier- and model-dependent. In that situation, continue using audio voicemail or the carrier’s supported alternative rather than repeatedly resetting the phone.
