Selenium WebDriver can capture browser screenshots, but a screenshot alone is not a visual test. Visual regression testing adds a checkpoint, compares the new image with an accepted baseline, and requires someone or something to review the differences. The dependable approach is to make the page state repeatable, choose what parts of the interface matter, and update baselines only after confirming a change is intentional.
What visual testing with Selenium does
Selenium is a browser automation project; WebDriver is its API for driving browsers. Selenium also documents IDE and Grid as separate project components. WebDriver can navigate through an application and capture a screenshot at a chosen point in a test. Visual testing then compares that capture with a stored baseline to find visible changes that ordinary functional assertions may not detect. Selenium documentation and the Selenium overview describe the project and its components.
A difference is not automatically a defect. It may indicate a regression, an intentional redesign, or noise from changing content. Review it in context: retain the accepted baseline when the change is a bug, and approve a replacement only after verifying the change is intended. Applitools describes this checkpoint, baseline, and review model in its visual testing overview.
Build a reliable Selenium screenshot check
1. Drive the application to a meaningful state
Use WebDriver to open the relevant route and perform the interactions needed to reach the UI state under test. A screenshot taken before the page has rendered, before a modal opens, or before a form is populated is not a useful comparison point. Wait for a condition that reflects the interface being ready, such as the presence of a key element, rather than relying on an arbitrary pause where a condition is available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Make capture conditions repeatable
Keep the route, viewport, browser setup, and application state consistent across runs. Use controlled test data where possible, and make the checkpoint explicit in the test so later runs capture the same state. If content is personalized, time-sensitive, or otherwise variable, decide whether to stabilize it, exclude a narrow area from comparison, or use a comparison approach that tolerates the variation without masking changes you need to catch.
3. Capture at a checkpoint
Take the screenshot after the intended state is ready. Selenium WebDriver supplies browser automation and screenshot capture; the reviewed official Selenium pages do not describe a built-in visual baseline comparison workflow. That is a boundary of those pages, not a claim that no local third-party comparison library can be used.

4. Compare with an accepted baseline
Use a visual comparison tool or a local image-comparison approach to compare the new capture with the baseline for the same checkpoint. Keep comparison scope deliberate: compare the whole page when broad layout changes matter, or a relevant region when the rest of the page contains unavoidable variable data.
5. Review before changing a baseline
Inspect the differences and classify them. A defect should leave the accepted baseline in place so the test continues to flag it. For an intentional design change, verify the result and then accept a new baseline through the team’s normal review process. Treating every new screenshot as the baseline would erase the test’s ability to detect regressions.

6. Run it with the rest of the suite
Keep visual checkpoints in the Selenium workflow alongside functional tests, so the same run establishes the relevant application state. Decide who reviews changes, how approvals are recorded, and how baseline updates are handled in CI before expanding coverage.
Control false positives without hiding real defects
Dynamic content is a major source of differences unrelated to layout defects. Applitools’ Selenium Java quickstart discusses dynamic dashboard data and match levels; Percy materials expose scope and region controls. Applitools’ Selenium quickstart and the Percy Python Selenium repository document these vendor-specific approaches.

- Stabilize the source: use deterministic fixtures or test data when varying content is not part of the visual behavior you want to test.
- Limit the region: compare the UI area relevant to the assertion if unrelated regions change. Avoid making the region so narrow that meaningful layout regressions fall outside it.
- Choose comparison behavior deliberately: a stricter comparison can surface small rendering changes; a more tolerant mode may reduce noise but can also overlook subtle defects. Align it with the risk and visual detail the test is meant to protect.
- Account for animation and loading: capture after the intended content has settled, and avoid taking snapshots during transient states unless those states are what the test covers.
Choose a visual testing workflow
Selenium can provide the browser interaction and screenshot checkpoint. A visual testing service or SDK can add baseline comparison and review; capabilities below are described by their vendors, not independently benchmarked here. The reviewed sources do not establish comparative prices or performance results.

Troubleshooting visual test noise
The same checkpoint differs from run to run
Check whether the capture occurs before the interface is settled, whether test data changes, or whether variable content such as a dashboard value is included. Stabilize the state or narrow the comparison region without excluding the UI behavior the test is intended to protect.
A screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm that navigation reached the expected route and that the checkpoint waits for the relevant content. Check whether the page requires an interaction or state setup that the test has not performed. Keep the viewport and capture point consistent with the baseline.

Do not accept a new baseline just to clear a failing comparison. Review the changed area, verify the intended design or content change, and keep the previously accepted baseline if the difference is a defect.
A vendor integration does not match your stack
Check its current SDK language, browser, runner, and CI support in the vendor’s documentation. In particular, verify the maintenance status of a repository integration before adopting it; a repository’s existence does not establish that it is the right current choice.
