Start with Playwright’s screenshot assertions if you want comparisons inside your browser tests; use a hosted service when cloud snapshots and a review workflow suit your team better. In either case, keep the capture environment consistent and inspect every difference before approving a new baseline.
How visual regression testing works
A visual regression test compares what a page looks like now with a previously approved screenshot. A mismatch signals that something changed visually; it does not by itself establish whether the change is a bug. The practical loop is to select important states, capture baselines, run comparisons during development or CI, and review diffs before accepting updates.
- Choose representative states. Select pages, viewports, and interaction states where appearance matters, such as navigation, forms, or checkout. Use predictable test data and the same route on each run. There is no universal page list: choose coverage based on the parts of your product where a visual regression would matter.
- Capture a baseline. Use a browser test to render the chosen state and save its screenshot as the reference.
- Compare later renders. Run the same test after code changes. The test or hosted service identifies visual differences for review.
- Decide what to do with each diff. If the change is unintended, fix the UI and rerun. If it is intentional, review and update the reference screenshot.
Start with Playwright screenshot assertions
Playwright Test has built-in screenshot assertions. After navigating to the intended state, call toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates the reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare against it. Playwright stores expected images alongside test snapshots. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for assertion behavior and configuration.
Minimal test example
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout page appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/checkout');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example route with a page in your application and ensure the test data and page state are deterministic. Run your Playwright tests normally; on the first execution, review the generated reference image. On later runs, a changed render produces a visual comparison for inspection.

Updating an approved baseline
Do not update snapshots simply to make a failing test pass. First decide whether the UI change is intended. When it is, review the changed screenshot and update the references with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the resulting image changes in version control before merging. The update command changes expected references; it does not determine whether the new appearance is correct.

Keep screenshots stable enough to compare
Visual comparisons can be noisy because an image depends on more than application code. Playwright warns that the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other rendering conditions can affect screenshots. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment. If a browser or platform difference is meaningful to your coverage, maintain separate baselines for it rather than comparing unlike renders. See Playwright’s guidance on screenshot comparisons.
Fix capture conditions first
- Browser and operating system: Keep the browser version and operating system consistent between baseline generation and comparison.
- Viewport and device-pixel ratio: Set these consistently. Chromatic documents that changing device-pixel ratio from 1.0 to 2.0 is flagged as a visual change even when the UI is otherwise identical; see its snapshot documentation.
- Test data and route: Use predictable content and reproduce the same route and interaction state on each run.
- Timing: Capture after the page has reached the state being tested, not halfway through a transition or before relevant content appears.
Handle dynamic content and animation
Rotating banners, timestamps, personalized content, and animation can create differences that are unrelated to a code regression. Playwright supports applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture to filter volatile regions, and it lets you configure pixel-difference thresholds. Use those controls narrowly: hiding too much or permitting too much difference can conceal a real UI change. Details are in the Playwright screenshot assertion documentation.

Chromatic says it pauses CSS animations and transitions, videos, and GIFs during snapshots. JavaScript-driven animations may still need to be paused by the test author; a capture taken mid-animation can produce a false positive. See Chromatic’s snapshot guidance.

Choose a comparison workflow
Pick the workflow according to where you want baselines to live, how you review differences, and what your team needs from CI. The options below are based on the documented capabilities cited; check current vendor documentation and terms before adopting a hosted service.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | You need screenshots through an API or want AI agents to capture pages through an MCP server. | It provides screenshot and PDF capture rather than a visual-regression baseline review workflow. Its stated features include cookie-banner and popup cleanup, and billing only for clean shots. |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | You want native comparisons in browser tests and expected images kept in your repository. | Your team manages baselines and must keep rendering conditions consistent. Playwright provides screenshot styles for volatile content and pixel-difference settings. |
| Chromatic with Playwright | You want hosted snapshots, a dedicated review interface, and CI reporting while extending existing Playwright tests. | Page archives and snapshots are uploaded to Chromatic’s cloud. Evaluate that workflow against your data requirements. Chromatic documents its Playwright integration and visual testing workflow. |
| Percy | You are considering a hosted visual testing service with browser and responsive-width comparisons. | The cited positioning comes from BrowserStack’s vendor material; verify current integrations and service terms on BrowserStack’s Percy page. |
Compare tools on local versus hosted baseline management, browser and viewport coverage, CI integration, diff review and debugging, capture stability, and the effort required to manage approved references. Current pricing and plan limits are not established here, so check each vendor’s current pricing information before deciding.

Review diffs alongside functional tests
A visual diff is evidence to inspect, not automatic proof that the UI is broken. A change can be intentional, caused by unstable capture conditions, or reveal an actual defect. Visual assertions cover appearance changes that logic-only checks may miss, but they do not replace functional tests. Chromatic gives the vendor example of a checkout button that remains functionally testable while a notification banner visually obscures it; treat that as an illustration of the distinction, not an independently measured result. Keep behavior checks in the suite and use visual review to catch appearance problems they cannot establish.
Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
- Many unrelated pixels differ: Check whether the operating system, browser version, headless mode, viewport, or device-pixel ratio changed. Compare like environments or generate a separate baseline for a genuinely different rendering target.
- A diff changes between repeated runs: Look for volatile page content, asynchronous loading, or animations. Make test data predictable, wait for the intended state, and use a narrowly scoped screenshot stylesheet or animation handling where appropriate.
- A baseline update hides a failure: Revert the update, inspect the proposed appearance, and decide whether the difference is intended before approving a new reference.
- A visual test passes but a control is unusable: Keep functional assertions as well. Screenshot comparison checks appearance, not whether an element behaves correctly.
- Hosted snapshots do not fit data requirements: Consider a repository-managed Playwright baseline workflow, or evaluate the hosted provider’s upload and retention practices before sending page archives.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, but it is a capture service, not a replacement for reviewing baseline diffs. For example, this cURL request captures a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
