To catch Salesforce UI changes before release, compare screenshots of important Lightning pages against approved baselines, then review the differences alongside functional tests. Use Jest for isolated custom Lightning Web Component (LWC) tests and browser automation for end-to-end workflows; do not make tests depend on Salesforce’s private HTML, CSS classes, or DOM structure.
What visual testing catches—and what it does not
Visual testing compares a rendered screen or selected region with an approved reference image. A difference can reveal a changed layout, styling, missing content, or rendering issue under the conditions in which the page was captured. It is a review signal, not proof of a functional defect: the screenshot shows appearance, while functional assertions check interactions and outcomes. A screenshot comparison alone does not validate accessibility or detect every broken workflow.
Salesforce’s testing guidance is about test scope and platform boundaries; it does not prescribe a particular visual-diff product, comparison threshold, or review process. Treat the workflow below as implementation guidance, not as a Salesforce-mandated recipe.
How do I catch UI changes in Salesforce before release?
- Choose high-value screens and states. List the Lightning pages and user journeys where appearance matters. Include representative record types, permissions, data states, and viewport sizes rather than capturing only one convenient account or user.
- Establish a repeatable capture condition. Use a stable test environment and keep browser, viewport, user permissions, record data, and page state consistent between the baseline and later run. Changing those inputs can create differences unrelated to the release.
- Capture and compare. Save an approved baseline for each selected state, then capture the same states during release validation. Review flagged differences in context; do not treat every pixel change as a defect.
- Decide before updating baselines. If a change is intentional, approve it and replace the corresponding baseline. If it is unexpected, investigate and fix it before release. Updating a baseline without review can normalize a regression.
- Keep behavior coverage separate. Retain assertions for workflow outcomes and interactions. Use Jest for isolated custom LWC behavior and browser automation for end-to-end journeys; screenshots supplement those checks rather than replace them.
- Keep selectors and page models maintainable. Avoid dependence on private Lightning markup and styling internals. Where Salesforce page objects fit the test, evaluate UTAM and check that its recipes and artifacts match the current Salesforce production release.
Why do my Salesforce UI tests break after a release?
Lightning’s rendered implementation is not a stable contract for test selectors. Salesforce says: “The content and structure of HTML, CSS, and the DOM in Lightning Experience can change at any time and can’t be considered a stable API.” Salesforce also states it has never guaranteed backward-compatible HTML, CSS, or DOM. A test that locates a control through internal markup or a CSS class can therefore fail after a platform change even when the user-facing task still works. Salesforce: End-to-End Tests: DOM Inspection Tests Are Subject to Change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shadow DOM adds another boundary: LWC encapsulation hides component markup from other components, so ordinary global DOM queries do not reach those internals. Salesforce Help specifically warns against depending on internal markup and CSS classes belonging to base Lightning components or standard Salesforce UI components. Salesforce Help: Salesforce Component Internals Are Protected.
- If a test breaks after a release, first identify whether it was relying on internal component structure rather than a supported interaction or user-visible outcome.
- Use a page-object abstraction where appropriate so maintenance is centralized instead of duplicated across tests.
- Review visual differences separately: a changed screenshot may reflect an intentional redesign, a data or viewport mismatch, or a genuine regression.
Should I use Jest or Selenium for Salesforce testing?
They address different layers and are not substitutes. Salesforce recommends Jest for LWC unit tests and describes UI automation tools such as Selenium WebDriver for end-to-end testing.

| Approach | Best fit | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Jest for LWC | Isolated custom component behavior, public API, basic interactions, rendered DOM output, and event checks. | Runs at the command line or in an IDE; it does not run in a browser or connect to an org. It is specific to LWC and does not test Aura components. |
| Browser UI automation, such as Selenium WebDriver | End-to-end user flows exercised in a browser against the application. | Do not make tests depend on private Lightning HTML, CSS, or DOM details that Salesforce can change. |
| Visual comparison | Reviewing rendered appearance for selected pages and states. | It reports image differences under capture conditions; pair it with functional checks and human review. |
Salesforce’s LWC Jest testing guide describes appropriate unit-test goals and the no-browser, no-org boundary. Its end-to-end testing guidance addresses browser automation and DOM fragility.
How can I test Lightning pages without relying on brittle selectors?
Prefer supported behavior over private structure
Write assertions around the task a user performs and the resulting outcome. Avoid selectors built around the internal markup or CSS classes of Salesforce base or standard components. A screenshot can help reviewers see whether a screen changed, but it does not make an internal selector stable.

Use UTAM page objects where they fit
Salesforce’s UTAM documentation describes page objects for testing Lightning Experience and the Salesforce mobile app. Java users can use Maven artifacts, and JavaScript users can use npm artifacts. Check the recipes repositories for artifacts compatible with the current production release; compatibility is version-sensitive. UTAM documentation.
Choose ownership and portability deliberately
Salesforce’s 2020 overview distinguishes commercial ecosystem tools, system integrator services, and open-source frameworks. It describes trade-offs rather than a current ranking of named products: commercial offerings may reduce maintenance when vendors update for Salesforce releases, but can cost more and be less portable; integrators can provide an end-to-end service but cost money and may involve ongoing contracts; open-source frameworks avoid license fees but require engineering time and continued maintenance. Frequently Asked Questions
Does screenshot comparison replace Salesforce functional tests?
No. It flags appearance differences; keep separate assertions for interactions and workflow outcomes.
Can Jest test an Aura component or a Salesforce org?
Salesforce’s LWC Jest guidance says Jest is specific to LWC and does not connect to an org; it does not test Aura components.
