Choose representative profiles and data states in the upstream email service provider (ESP) or personalization platform, capture the resulting email through a supported preview workflow, and keep the profile, client, and artifact details together so defects can be reproduced.
Why a base-template preview is not enough
A template can render differently depending on profile attributes, segment membership, locale, catalog or feed data, conditional blocks, fallback rules, or modules supplied by another platform. A screenshot of the template’s default state cannot show whether those rules produced the right content for other recipients. The key is to test the rendered outputs created by the upstream system, not assume that a static preview has exercised every rule or data state.
For each meaningful state, inspect the rendered email in the relevant clients. Compare both across clients (the same state in different clients) and across states (different content in the same client). This separates content-rule defects from client-rendering defects.
How do I test dynamic content?
1. Map the dimensions that change the email
Write down the inputs that can alter the message. Depending on the campaign, these may include profile fields, segment inclusion or exclusion, locale, product-feed values, conditional content, and missing-data fallbacks. Keep the list tied to actual rules in the template or personalization system; there is no universal test matrix that fits every email.

2. Choose profiles that exercise the rules
Select representative profiles or test records that cause materially different outputs. Include records that should receive and should not receive conditional content, populated and missing fields, short and long values, and fallback states. Record which profile and input state generated each rendered version. If several profiles produce the same output for a particular rule, you may be able to test the shared state once, but document that choice.
3. Generate each version upstream
Use the ESP or personalization platform to select the profile, segment, or version and generate the message. Then use its supported preview integration, or submit that rendered HTML or a URL to a preview service that accepts it. Do not treat a preview of the original template as proof that a third-party rule ran. Confirm that the output actually contains the expected personalized content before moving on to client checks.
Documented Litmus extension workflows include selecting a version or profile for Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Marketo and refreshing previews; its Adobe Campaign Standard workflow describes switching test profiles and refreshing between versions. Litmus also documents a project workflow with switchable versions. These are examples of documented integrations, not a guarantee of support for every platform, account, or current plan. 4. Choose clients based on your audience
Build the client list from the audience and the devices or clients your team can observe. There is no universally correct minimum list established for this workflow. If you have usage data, use it to prioritize; otherwise, define a deliberate coverage set and note what it leaves out. Keep the same client selection for comparisons among variants so the results are meaningful.

For each selected state and client, check the content and its rendering. Look for missing or incorrect personalized text, conditional blocks that appear in the wrong state, unexpected fallback copy, clipped or overflowing long values, broken layout, typography and spacing changes, and button or link placement. Verify that links point to the intended destination and that images render as expected. Include a plain-text check when the campaign or sending workflow provides a plain-text alternative.
6. Check image-blocked behavior when relevant
Some recipients or preview conditions may not show images. Litmus’s image guidance says images should be hosted on the sender’s or ESP’s server and referenced with absolute URLs; it also says CID and base64-embedded images do not render in its iOS previews. Treat that as guidance for the documented Litmus preview context, and check the behavior of the clients and workflow you actually use. Make sure essential information remains understandable if images are unavailable.
7. Preserve evidence and rerun affected cases
For every artifact, retain the screenshot or test identifier alongside the profile label, relevant data state, source HTML or template version, timestamp, and client selection. When you fix a defect, rerun the affected states and clients and record any exceptions. If your workflow supports post-send monitoring, use it as a separate safeguard: Litmus describes Email Guardian as monitoring changes after a preview or QA test, but availability depends on its current product and plan.
Choosing a preview workflow or service
First ask whether the workflow can see the output produced by your ESP or personalization platform. A service that only receives the base template cannot independently prove that an upstream profile rule or third-party module generated the right content. Then compare the factors below against your team’s needs.

- Rendered-state access: Can you select profiles or versions through an integration, or must you submit each rendered HTML output separately?
- Integration and plan limits: Which ESPs and personalization tools are supported, and which account tiers include the features you need?
- Client coverage: Are the preview clients relevant to your audience, and are results screenshots from actual client rendering or another form of simulation?
- Automation: Can the workflow fit your API or CI process, and can it return a status and usable screenshot locations?
- Content checks: Does your process cover links, assets, images, and image-blocked conditions in addition to visual layout?
- Evidence handling: How long are tests retained, how long do screenshot links work, and can your team retrieve results later?
- Repeatability: Can teammates identify which profile, version, client set, and source revision produced an artifact?
Litmus
Litmus documents client previews, pre-send checks, and the dynamic-content workflows described above for Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Marketo, and Adobe Campaign Standard. Its getting-started guidance describes sending a test from an ESP, pasting HTML for a quick test, or using Litmus Builder and its preview and QA flow. That guide says the drag-and-drop Visual Editor is available only on Enterprise plans and spam testing is available on Plus and Enterprise plans. Plan names and availability can change; verify the current plan details and integration support before choosing a workflow.

Email on Acid / Mailgun Inspect
The Email on Acid v5 API documentation requires a subject and either HTML or a URL, allows clients to be selected, and returns a status plus screenshot locations. The documentation says tests are stored for 90 days and unauthenticated presigned screenshot URLs last 24 hours; it recommends retrieving fresh results for dynamic screenshot URLs. The product is currently presented as part of Mailgun Inspect, so verify the current product name, API version, client coverage, availability, and terms before building against it. The documented retention and URL windows affect how you should archive evidence: save needed results while they remain accessible and do not assume a signed screenshot URL is permanent.

Troubleshooting common failures
The preview shows the same content for every profile
Check that the profile or version was selected in the upstream platform, that the preview was refreshed after changing it, and that the rendered output contains the expected state. A stale preview or an unchanged test record can make different cases look identical. Save the selected profile and the resulting output together so you can verify what was tested.

A personalized field is blank or malformed
Check the test record’s field values, the template’s fallback behavior, and any formatting or length assumptions. Test both a populated value and a missing value, then inspect a long value for wrapping, clipping, or broken spacing.
Images do not appear
Verify that image URLs are absolute and accessible from the preview environment, and inspect the message with images blocked if that condition matters to your audience. For Litmus iOS previews specifically, its guidance says CID and base64-embedded images do not render. Keep essential copy and calls to action usable without image content.
An API test completes but screenshots are unavailable later
Check the service’s current retention and screenshot-link rules, and retrieve artifacts while their links are valid. For the documented Email on Acid v5 behavior, tests are stored for 90 days and unauthenticated presigned screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours; use fresh results for dynamic screenshot URLs and archive the evidence your process requires.

A screenshot looks correct but the email still fails in a recipient’s inbox
Confirm that the test exercised the same rendered content state, client, and relevant image conditions as the failed message. A browser screenshot of a hosted preview is useful evidence for that page, not proof of how a particular inbox client renders an email. Reproduce the output through the ESP and check it in the relevant email-client preview workflow.

How many dynamic variants should I test?
Test each materially different output state created by the rules in your message. Group profiles only when they exercise the same relevant conditions and produce the same content state, and record that grouping.
Can I use a screenshot of a browser preview as proof of inbox rendering?
No. A browser capture can document a hosted preview page, but it does not establish how a target email client renders the message. Use an email-client preview workflow for inbox-client checks.
