Visual Testing Challenges: How to Catch Website Changes
Visual tests compare rendered screenshots with accepted baselines. Learn how to stabilize captures, control dynamic content, review differences, and choose coverage.
Visual testing catches unintended website changes by capturing screenshots at meaningful UI states and comparing them with previously accepted baselines. A mismatch is a prompt to review—not proof of a bug. Reliable checks depend on repeatable capture conditions, controlled dynamic content, and a deliberate decision about whether to fix the page or accept a reviewed change as the new baseline.
What visual testing checks
Visual tests compare rendered output: a screenshot from a selected page state is checked against an image the team previously accepted. This can expose layout or appearance changes that functional assertions miss; code paths may still pass while the rendered page looks wrong. Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing that checks whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly (Guide Helped? Tip Us
A pixel difference is only a signal. It may reflect an intended redesign, a genuine regression, or capture noise such as antialiasing and subpixel shifts. Visual checks complement functional testing; they do not replace functional, accessibility, or usability testing.
The four-step visual testing workflow
Exercise the UI into a meaningful state. Use the interactions and data needed to reach the screen or component you want to verify.
Capture a checkpoint. Record the rendered state at a defined viewport and browser configuration.
Compare against the accepted baseline. Inspect the comparison or diff rather than assuming every changed pixel is a defect.
Review and decide. Fix the cause and retain the old baseline if the difference is unwanted. If the UI change is intentional, approve the new image as the baseline after review.
Why screenshot tests are flaky—and how to reduce noise
Keep the capture environment consistent
Playwright warns that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode (Playwright visual comparisons). Run comparisons in a consistent environment and pin browser and runtime versions where practical. This reduces sources of variation, but does not guarantee identical pixels in every run.

Control dynamic content and timing
Dates, randomized values, advertisements, user-specific content, asynchronous rendering, and changing network responses can make otherwise unchanged pages look different. Prefer deterministic fixtures or mocked responses when possible, and wait for a meaningful readiness condition rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay.
When a region is genuinely irrelevant to the test, mask or filter it. Playwright documents filtering volatile elements to improve screenshot determinism. Keep masks narrow: hiding a large region can conceal the very regression the test should catch.

Account for rendering noise
Antialiasing and subpixel positioning may cause pixel-level differences without a meaningful user-visible change. Some tools offer match levels or visual-AI approaches. These are tradeoffs in how comparisons are performed, not guarantees that every defect will be found or that flakiness will disappear. Applitools describes Strict, Layout, and Dynamic modes in its Playwright integration materials (Applitools Playwright documentation).
Review differences before updating a baseline
For every changed image, identify the affected UI state and viewport, inspect the diff, and decide whether the change was intended. Update only the baselines affected by an approved UI change. If the difference is unexplained or looks like a regression, preserve the known-good baseline while investigating; accepting a new image without review can normalize a bug.

Choose coverage and tooling around your risk
There is no universally correct browser matrix. Select the browser, operating system, viewport, and device combinations that matter to your audience and the risk of the feature. Local screenshots in a pinned environment are easier to keep consistent; a hosted browser or device grid can broaden coverage, but check the provider’s current plan and coverage claims.
Environment: Are captures rendered locally in a controlled setup or on hosted browser and device combinations?
Volatile content: Can you make data deterministic, mask selected regions, or configure matching behavior?
Baseline workflow: How are screenshots stored, reviewed, approved, and updated across affected states?
Integration: Does the tool fit your existing test runner and CI workflow? Applitools lists integrations for Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium in its product materials (Applitools integrations).
Coverage and usage: What browsers and viewports are included, and how does the service count screenshots? BrowserStack says each browser counts as a separate screenshot against monthly Percy screenshot usage; check your current account terms (BrowserStack Percy documentation).
Playwright’s built-in screenshot comparison
For a team already using Playwright, its screenshot assertions can capture and compare visual snapshots as part of browser tests. Consult the Playwright snapshot documentation for the current setup and configuration. Keep the environment and test data stable, and treat each proposed snapshot update as a review decision rather than an automatic fix.
