Visual Studio Professional is a full integrated development environment (IDE); Visual Studio Code is a lightweight, extensible code editor. Professional bundles code understanding, refactoring, testing, diagnostics, debugging, and collaboration features in one Windows-focused product. VS Code is free, open-source-based, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with extensions supplying language and workflow support.
Microsoft’s own FAQ summarizes the distinction: “Visual Studio is a fully-featured IDE whereas Visual Studio Code is a code editor. Visual Studio Code is free and based on open source, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.” Your best choice depends on whether you need an integrated toolchain, a configurable cross-platform editor, or a free IDE such as Visual Studio Community.

Visual Studio Professional is an integrated IDE
An IDE brings editing, project and solution management, build tooling, debugging, testing, diagnostics, and source-control workflows into one coordinated application. Microsoft positions Professional for individual developers and small teams and highlights code understanding, CodeLens, collaboration, testing, and diagnostic features on its Visual Studio Professional product page.

This integration matters when a project has many components or when developers need to move repeatedly between code, tests, breakpoints, analyzers, performance information, and team review. The tools are designed to understand a project’s structure rather than treating each file as an isolated document.
Visual Studio Code is an extensible editor
VS Code starts with editing, navigation, a terminal, source-control integration, and debugging foundations. Its extension model lets you add language servers, formatters, linters, test adapters, debuggers, container tooling, and other workflows. That modular design keeps the base installation relatively focused, but you are responsible for choosing, configuring, and maintaining the extensions your project needs.
Extensions can make VS Code highly capable, but an extended editor is not automatically feature-for-feature equivalent to an integrated IDE. Extension quality, maintenance, licensing, and compatibility can differ by language and project type.

Operating-system differences
VS Code is the cross-platform choice
Microsoft lists VS Code for Windows, macOS, and Linux. If your team needs the same editor on all three operating systems, VS Code is the straightforward option. Project files, settings, and extensions may still require per-platform configuration, but the application itself is offered across those platforms.
Visual Studio’s current IDE is Windows-focused
Do not select Professional assuming it is a current macOS IDE. Microsoft’s comparison materials link to the notice that Visual Studio for Mac retired on August 31, 2024; the current Visual Studio IDE positioning is Windows-focused. A Mac or Linux developer who wants Microsoft’s editor should evaluate VS Code and its extensions instead.
How their development workflows differ
Project and solution understanding
Professional is built around an integrated project and solution model. Its code-understanding features can show relationships and context across a codebase, while CodeLens surfaces information inside the editor. Refactoring and navigation are part of the IDE workflow rather than separate tools that you assemble.

VS Code can provide comparable categories of assistance through language extensions, but the exact experience depends on the language service and extension set. Check the extension’s supported project types before assuming that a large solution will behave like it does in Professional.

Microsoft’s comparison matrix lists Professional capabilities including unit testing, code coverage, debugging, and diagnostic tooling. These are useful when test discovery, test execution, breakpoints, diagnostic views, and code-quality analysis need to work together in one environment.
VS Code supports debugging and testing through built-in foundations and extensions. The practical result can be excellent, especially for a focused language or framework, but setup is more dependent on the project’s extensions, configuration files, and external command-line tools. Verify support for your test framework and debugger rather than judging by the editor alone.
Collaboration and review
Professional’s listed collaboration capabilities include Code Review and Live Share. Those features are relevant when developers need to review changes or share an active session without leaving the IDE. Microsoft may revise the comparison matrix, so confirm the current edition and subscription entitlements before standardizing on a feature.
VS Code can add collaboration through extensions and services. That flexibility is useful for mixed toolchains, but it means the collaboration experience is assembled rather than delivered as one Professional edition feature set.

VS Code’s extension-first model
VS Code’s main advantage is choice. You can install only the language support, formatter, linter, test adapter, container integration, or source-control extension your project requires. This is attractive for polyglot developers and teams that want a consistent editor across operating systems.

The trade-off is operational: extensions can conflict, require separate configuration, or lag behind a language release. Establish a team extension list and version policy if reproducibility matters. Keep project-specific settings in source control where appropriate, and test extension updates before rolling them out broadly.
C# support through C# Dev Kit
Microsoft lists C# Dev Kit for VS Code as providing C# editing, AI code completion, solution management, integrated testing, and customization. Microsoft describes it on its Visual Studio subscription and product-family materials. C# Dev Kit can therefore make VS Code a serious option for .NET work, particularly when cross-platform editing is important.
Adding C# Dev Kit does not erase the product distinction. VS Code remains an editor whose capabilities are delivered through extensions, while Professional remains an integrated IDE with its own project, diagnostic, testing, and collaboration experience.

Do not infer language lock-in
Professional is not required simply because a project uses a Microsoft language, and VS Code cannot be dismissed as incapable of supporting one. Language support changes with extensions and Microsoft’s product updates. Evaluate the current tools for your language, framework, build system, debugger, test runner, and deployment workflow.
Features that can justify Professional
Code understanding and CodeLens
CodeLens places contextual information in the code view, while broader code-understanding and refactoring features help developers navigate dependencies and make structural changes. These capabilities reduce the number of separate windows and extensions needed for a large, established codebase.
Integrated testing and coverage
Professional’s comparison listing includes unit testing and code coverage. If your team routinely discovers tests, runs targeted or full suites, examines failures, and reviews coverage from the same environment, an integrated workflow can be more predictable than assembling multiple VS Code extensions.

Diagnostics and debugging
Professional is aimed at developers who need integrated diagnostics and debugging as part of daily development. This can matter for complex applications where breakpoints, call stacks, analyzers, performance information, and project context must be used together.

Team-oriented workflows
Code Review and Live Share are among the collaboration capabilities Microsoft lists for Professional. They can be valuable when pairing, reviewing, or investigating an issue is a routine part of the development process and the team wants those actions close to the code.
Pricing, subscriptions, and what the prices include
Microsoft’s displayed prices were checked on October 13, 2026. They are a dated snapshot in U.S. dollars, not a promise that the same amounts apply in every country, purchasing channel, tax jurisdiction, or organization.
| Professional offer | Microsoft-displayed price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | US$45 per user/month | Monthly Professional offer; listed subscription benefits differ from the standard annual offer |
| Professional standard | US$99.99 per user/month, paid annually | Microsoft displayed a US$66.59 per user/month renewal rate after the first year |
| Standalone IDE purchase | One-time purchase described by Microsoft | Current price and license details must be confirmed at the point of purchase |
For current offers, consult Microsoft’s Visual Studio pricing page. Microsoft’s displayed figures identify the offer type: US$45 per user/month for Professional monthly, US$99.99 per user/month paid annually for Professional standard, and US$66.59 per user/month as the shown renewal rate after the first year.
Benefits listed with the standard subscription
The standard subscription page lists Visual Studio Professional, Azure DevOps Basic, a US$50 monthly Azure credit, basic development and test software, training, and support. The monthly Professional listing includes Azure DevOps Basic. These benefits are part of the stated offer and should be checked again before purchase because Microsoft can change plan contents.

- The annual figure is billed annually even though Microsoft expresses it as a monthly amount.
- The renewal figure applies after the first year in the displayed offer and is not the introductory annual price.
- Country-specific pricing, taxes, reseller terms, organizational licensing, and eligibility can change the amount you actually pay.
- A standalone purchase is separate from subscription benefits; confirm exactly what updates and services accompany it.
Visual Studio Community: the free IDE option
If you want an integrated IDE without paying for Professional, evaluate Visual Studio Community. Microsoft describes Community as a free, fully featured IDE for students, open-source contributors, and individual developers.
Best Value
Microsoft’s comparison page describes a non-enterprise organization scenario allowing up to five users and defines an enterprise organization there as one with more than 250 PCs or more than US$1 million in annual revenue. Those are the criteria presented in that comparison context, not a substitute for reading the complete current license. Your organization’s structure, number of users, and use case determine whether Community is permitted.
Community is therefore a genuine third option, not simply a trial of Professional. Check the current comparison page and applicable license terms before deploying it for a company or client project.
Which tool should you choose?
Choose VS Code when these conditions describe your work
- You need a free editor.
- Windows, macOS, and Linux support is important.
- You work across several languages or frameworks and prefer selecting extensions per project.
- Your team is comfortable maintaining editor settings, extensions, command-line build tools, and test integrations.
- You want a small core installation and do not need every IDE feature integrated from the start.
Choose Visual Studio Professional when these conditions matter
- You want an integrated Windows IDE rather than assembling a toolchain.
- CodeLens, refactoring, solution-level understanding, integrated testing, coverage, diagnostics, or debugging are central to your workflow.
- Code Review or Live Share in the Professional feature set helps your team collaborate.
- The subscription benefits, support, training, Azure DevOps Basic, or Azure credit justify the paid plan.
- Your organization needs a commercial Professional entitlement rather than Community licensing.
Choose Community when an integrated IDE is preferred but the license fits
- You are an individual developer, student, or open-source contributor covered by Microsoft’s stated terms.
- Your organization fits the applicable non-enterprise conditions and user limit described by Microsoft.
- You have checked the complete current license for the specific project and organization.
Common real-world scenarios
Individual developer on a Mac or Linux machine
VS Code is the practical starting point because Microsoft lists it for macOS and Linux and it is free. Add the extensions required by your language and framework. Professional is not the current macOS IDE choice, and Community does not change the platform requirement.
.NET team on Windows
Compare the team’s need for solution-level understanding, integrated tests, diagnostics, CodeLens, and collaboration against the Professional subscription cost. If those features remove enough configuration and tool switching, Professional may justify its price. If the team prefers a configurable editor or has a cross-platform requirement, evaluate VS Code with C# Dev Kit and the project’s required extensions.
Student or open-source contributor
Community may provide the integrated IDE experience at no charge when the applicable license allows it. VS Code remains the simpler free choice when cross-platform editing or extension-based workflows are more important.
Organization standardizing development tools
Start with licensing and platform constraints, then verify each required feature in Microsoft’s live comparison matrix. Document the exact Professional offer, renewal terms, Community eligibility, extension policy, and operating-system support before purchasing or deploying to a larger group.
A practical evaluation checklist
- List the required workflows. Write down languages, project types, build commands, test frameworks, debugger needs, code review, live collaboration, and target operating systems.
- Check the current feature matrix. Confirm that the specific Professional capability you need is listed for the edition and version you plan to use.
- Prototype the editor path. In VS Code, install only the extensions required for your project and test editing, build, debugging, and test discovery on every supported operating system.
- Review licensing. Compare Professional pricing with Community’s current license conditions and your organization’s facts.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include annual billing, the displayed first-year renewal change, taxes, support needs, and any extension or service costs your workflow requires.
- Record a team standard. Keep a supported extension list, settings policy, and update process if you choose VS Code; record subscription and entitlement details if you choose Professional.
Bottom line: integrated IDE or configurable editor?
There is no universal winner. Choose VS Code for a free, cross-platform editor that you can shape with extensions. Choose Visual Studio Professional when its integrated code understanding, testing, diagnostics, debugging, and collaboration capabilities solve a concrete workflow need and the paid entitlement fits your budget. Choose Visual Studio Community when you want a free integrated IDE and your individual, educational, open-source, or organizational use satisfies Microsoft’s current license terms.
