Visual Studio Code Shared AI Canvases vs Cursor: Which Collaborative AI Editor Fits Your Team?

Choose Cursor if your team needs a documented, publish-to-team canvas workflow today. Choose Visual Studio Code (VS Code) if you already standardize on VS Code and GitHub Copilot, want an agent to manage interactive planning or reporting artifacts, and can accept a Preview feature that works only in specific local desktop sessions. Neither product replaces a live pair-programming tool: use Live Share when people must edit, debug, and navigate code together in real time.

What each product means by a collaborative canvas

The word canvas describes a collaboration object, not simply another chat panel. In both editors, an AI agent can create a rendered artifact—such as a board, chart, audit, or report—that you can inspect and change. The important difference is what happens after creation: who can open it, who can edit it, whether a teammate receives a live workspace or a snapshot, and which environments can run the feature.

VS Code: one artifact shared by you and the agent

VS Code 1.142, released October 14, 2026, introduces canvases as a Preview feature. Microsoft describes them as “interactive interfaces to collaborate with an agent.” A canvas opens beside chat so you and the agent inspect and update the same artifact. A Kanban board is the clearest example: you can move a card in the interface and ask the agent to update the underlying work.

The object is therefore an agent-managed surface inside your VS Code session. The release documentation confirms canvas support, but it does not define a general teammate-publishing or organization-wide canvas-sharing workflow. Treat that distinction seriously: a canvas that you and an agent can edit is not automatically a canvas that another employee can open.

Cursor: an interactive artifact that can be published

Cursor renders canvases beside chat as standalone interactive artifacts. The agent can create dashboards, analyses, audits, and reports; you can review the rendered view or edit its source; then you can prompt iterative changes. Cursor saves the canvas so it can be reopened and rerun with fresh data.

Cursor’s documented sharing action publishes a live snapshot. Teammates open a link showing the same layout, charts, and tables without rerunning the agent, but they open it read-only. That is a distribution workflow rather than simultaneous multi-user editing of one canvas.

How VS Code shared canvases work

Requirements and activation

Canvas support is gated behind a setting and a particular agent runtime:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install VS Code 1.142 or a later release that retains the feature.
  2. Open VS Code Settings and enable chat.canvases.enabled. You can also set the value to true in your user or workspace settings.json.
  3. Start a supported local Copilot Agent Host session in the desktop application.
  4. Open Chat or the Agents window and ask the agent for an interactive artifact, or use a task where the agent elects to create a canvas.

The canvas appears beside chat. You can interact with the rendered surface while the agent reads the same artifact and applies requested changes. The feature is available in the editor and in the Agents window.

Environment limitations

The agent-harness documentation narrows availability beyond the setting itself. Canvases are supported on desktop in supported local Copilot Agent Host sessions. They are not supported in:

  • Claude sessions;
  • Codex sessions;
  • extension-host Local sessions;
  • remote Agent Host sessions;
  • browser or web clients; or
  • auxiliary-window hosting.

This means a team cannot assume that enabling the setting makes canvases available in every development setup. A developer working in the browser, a remote workspace, or an unsupported agent session will not receive the same canvas capability.

What “sharing” currently means in VS Code

VS Code’s documentation establishes collaboration between the user and the agent, not a universal “publish this canvas to the team” command. If your requirement is a teammate opening the exact artifact from a link, ask Microsoft or your administrator for a supported workflow before procurement; the cited release and harness pages do not specify one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still place the files or generated data behind your normal source-control and workspace controls, but that is different from a first-class shared-canvas service. Do not promise stakeholders that a Preview canvas can be viewed read-only by everyone in an organization unless your own deployment documentation confirms it.

Governance considerations

The same VS Code release introduces stronger enterprise controls for agent sandboxing and permission policies. Those controls matter when an agent can read files, run tools, or write project artifacts, but Microsoft does not state that every control is canvas-specific. Evaluate the permissions of the underlying agent session and the workspace separately from the canvas UI.

How Cursor canvases work

Create, inspect, and rerun an artifact

  1. Open Cursor’s chat and describe the outcome you need, such as an incident dashboard, dependency audit, or project report. You can also let Cursor decide that a task benefits from a canvas.
  2. Cursor builds the interactive artifact beside chat.
  3. Review the rendered view. If you need to understand or control the implementation, open and edit the canvas source.
  4. Prompt Cursor with changes, or rerun the canvas with fresh data. Cursor saves the artifact so you can reopen it later.

This workflow separates presentation from the conversation. A saved canvas can become a repeatable operational document rather than a one-time chat response.

Publish a team snapshot

When you publish a canvas, Cursor creates a live snapshot link. The recipient sees the same layout, charts, and tables without running the agent again. The recipient cannot edit that shared view; team members open it read-only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your Shared Canvases dashboard lists canvases you published. A canvas published by another teammate is opened through that person’s share link rather than appearing as your own published item.

Plan, membership, and privacy gates

Sharing is available on eligible paid plans: Premium and higher, Teams, Enterprise, and legacy Pro, Pro+, and Ultra plans. Free accounts cannot create shares. Only members of the relevant team can open a shared canvas.

Sharing also requires a privacy mode that permits data storage. Cursor states that Legacy Privacy Mode blocks shared canvases. This is a procurement and compliance decision, not merely a UI preference: determine whether the data displayed in a canvas may be stored under your team’s policy before enabling publication.

Team administrators can disable shared canvases in team settings. If the feature is unavailable despite an eligible subscription, check team membership, the administrator’s setting, and the account’s privacy mode before troubleshooting the canvas itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standardizing recurring work with skills

Cursor documents a way to package repeatable canvas workflows as skills. A skill can describe when it should trigger, the required layout, data sources or queries, and formatting rules. This is useful for teams that need every audit, status report, or operational dashboard to follow the same structure while still allowing the agent to refresh the data.

Can teammates edit the same AI artifact?

Not in the same way across these products. In VS Code, the documented interaction is between one user and the agent updating one artifact in a session. A general multi-person canvas-editing protocol is not specified. In Cursor, publishing gives teammates a read-only snapshot; they do not edit the published view together.

If several people must change code or files simultaneously, use a human collaboration session instead of treating either canvas as a shared whiteboard. Canvases are strongest for agent-assisted analysis and presentation; they are not documented as simultaneous multi-user editing surfaces.

Where Live Share fits

Visual Studio Live Share remains the stronger choice for synchronous human pair work. Participants can see one another’s edits, selections, and cursors immediately; work together or independently across files; follow a colleague’s file and scroll position; and send a focus request. Sessions can include shared debugging, shared terminals, and shared servers, and participants can join from a browser while retaining personal editor preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The host can make a session read-only and restrict guest file access with .vsls.json. Those controls address live project access rather than publication of an AI-generated report.

Microsoft labels Live Share as being in maintenance mode, with no additional features planned. That does not remove its current collaboration capabilities, but it should temper expectations of major new collaboration features. Pair programming, mentoring, interviews, incident debugging, and live code review remain practical reasons to use it alongside either editor.

Which editor fits common team scenarios?

Your team is already standardized on VS Code and Copilot

VS Code is the lower-friction choice when the team wants an agent-managed Kanban board, diagram, or planning surface inside an existing editor. Confirm that the users who need canvases work in the desktop app with local Copilot Agent Host sessions. Preview status and the absence of a documented general publishing workflow are the trade-offs.

You need a documented link that teammates can open

Cursor is the clearer fit. Eligible paid plans let a team member publish a snapshot with a stable layout, charts, and tables, and other team members can open it read-only. Verify that every viewer belongs to the team and that privacy settings allow storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need repeatable reports or audits

Cursor has a practical advantage when the same canvas pattern must be run repeatedly. Saved canvases can be reopened and rerun with fresh data, and skills can encode triggers, queries, layout, and formatting. VS Code’s documented canvas capability supports agent interaction, but the cited documentation does not describe an equivalent publishing and workflow-packaging system.

You need people to edit code together now

Use Live Share with whichever editor your team prefers. Its shared cursors, selections, follow and focus controls, terminals, servers, and debugging are designed for a live human session. Do not select an AI canvas expecting those controls.

You operate under strict data-handling rules

For Cursor, decide whether the required storage-enabled privacy mode is acceptable and whether an administrator should disable sharing. For VS Code, review the local agent’s sandbox and permission policies; Microsoft describes enterprise controls, but does not claim that all are canvas-specific. In both cases, define which files and data an agent may access before users create artifacts containing sensitive information.

Decision checklist before rollout

  • Collaboration object: Is the requirement an agent-managed artifact, a read-only publication, or live human editing?
  • Audience: Must colleagues open a link, or is the artifact only for the creator’s local session?
  • Editing rights: Do viewers need to modify the artifact, or is read-only review sufficient?
  • Environment: For VS Code, are users on desktop with local Copilot Agent Host sessions rather than web, remote, Claude, Codex, extension-host Local, or auxiliary-window environments?
  • Plan eligibility: For Cursor, are publishers on Premium or higher, Teams, Enterprise, or an eligible legacy plan rather than free accounts?
  • Team membership: Will every Cursor viewer belong to the team that owns the shared canvas?
  • Privacy: Does the required storage behavior comply with policy, and is Legacy Privacy Mode preventing publication?
  • Administration: Has a Cursor administrator enabled shared canvases, and has the VS Code administrator configured suitable agent permissions?
  • Human collaboration: Should Live Share be added for pair programming, debugging, interviews, or mentoring?
  • Product maturity: Is the team comfortable adopting a VS Code Preview feature, or does it need a documented production sharing workflow?

Common failure points and fixes

The VS Code canvas never appears

Check the feature flag first: chat.canvases.enabled must be enabled. Then verify that VS Code is running on the desktop, the session uses the Copilot harness, and the Agent Host is local and supported. A browser client, remote Agent Host, Claude or Codex session, extension-host Local session, or auxiliary-window host is outside the documented support boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Cursor share option is missing

Confirm that the account is on an eligible paid plan and that the user is a team member. Free accounts cannot create shares. Ask the team administrator whether shared canvases were disabled, and check that the account is not using Legacy Privacy Mode, which blocks sharing.

A teammate cannot open a Cursor link

The recipient must be a member of the relevant team. A published canvas is a read-only snapshot; it does not grant editing access or allow an outside viewer to rerun the agent.

A team expects collaborative editing of a published canvas

That expectation conflicts with Cursor’s documented model. Use the source and chat for the owner-led iteration, publish a new snapshot when the artifact changes, or move the human editing session to Live Share for code and files.

Verdict

Cursor is the better documented collaborative AI editor when “collaborative” means publishing a saved, read-only canvas to paying team members, with administrator controls and repeatable skills. VS Code shared canvases are the better fit for Copilot-centered teams that want to work with an agent on an interactive artifact inside the desktop editor and can accept Preview status, local-host restrictions, and an unspecified general teammate-sharing workflow. Add Live Share whenever the real requirement is people editing and debugging together in real time.
