Een Mac is niet onkwetsbaar, maar je start niet onbeschermd: macOS bevat al meerdere beveiligingslagen, waaronder een ingebouwde antivirustechnologie genaamd XProtect. Een aparte virusscanner is dus geen verplichting. Het kan wel zinvol zijn als je extra functies wilt, zoals phishingbescherming, of een tweede detectielaag. Hieronder lees je wat macOS zelf doet, wat onafhankelijke tests wel en niet aantonen en waar je op let bij een keuze.
Wat macOS zelf al doet
Apple beschrijft in Protecting against malware in macOS meerdere samenwerkende lagen. Apple zegt letterlijk: “macOS includes built-in antivirus technology called XProtect for the signature-based detection and removal of malware.”

XProtect
- Gebruikt YARA-signatures om bekende malware te herkennen en de uitvoering te blokkeren.
- Scant volgens Apple alleen apps die zijn gewijzigd of bij de eerste start (“XProtect scans only apps that have been changed or apps at first launch”). Het is dus geen continue volledige scan van je schijf, ook al controleert het ook wanneer signatures worden bijgewerkt.
- Bij een detectie wordt de malware geblokkeerd, naar de prullenmand verplaatst en krijg je een melding in Finder.
- Apple beschrijft ook remediatie van bestaande infecties en een geavanceerdere engine die onbekende malware op gedrag kan herkennen.
- Updates worden standaard dagelijks gecontroleerd en kunnen los van reguliere macOS-updates binnenkomen.
Gatekeeper en notarisation
Ontwikkelaars die apps buiten de App Store verspreiden, kunnen die laten notariseren: Apple scant de software dan op bekende malware en kan een ticket uitgeven. Gatekeeper gebruikt dat om niet-vertrouwde software te weren. Apple kan tickets ook later intrekken; macOS controleert geregeld op nieuwe revocation tickets, zodat een eerder goedgekeurde maar later schadelijk gebleken app alsnog wordt geblokkeerd.

Heb je dan nog een aparte virusscanner nodig?
Beide absolute stellingen kloppen niet: “Macs krijgen geen malware” is onwaar, en “elke Mac heeft een aparte scanner nodig” is niet onderbouwd. Er zijn in de beschikbare bronnen geen betrouwbare infectiecijfers of marktaandelen voor macOS-malware bevestigd, dus je kunt de kans op infectie van jouw Mac niet in een getal uitdrukken.
Een extra programma is vooral te overwegen als je:
- extra bescherming tegen phishing wilt. Stiftung Warentest (2026) noemt dit een relevant aanvullend gebied; redacteur Dennis Stieler stelt dat de geteste programma’s gemiddeld duidelijk beter tegen phishing beschermen dan de browser, en dat je het best beide mechanismen tegelijk laat draaien;
- vaak software buiten de App Store installeert of bestanden uitwisselt met Windows-gebruikers;
- één dashboard of extra functies wilt voor meerdere apparaten.
Wil je alleen een veilige basis, dan zijn updaten van macOS, apps alleen uit betrouwbare bronnen en je browser bijgewerkt houden de eerste stappen.

Bij AV-TEST haalden meerdere producten in alle drie de categorieën zes punten. ESET Security Ultimate en F-Secure Total scoorden 5,5 op gebruiksgemak. Getest werden onder meer Avast One, AVG Antivirus, Avira Security, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, ESET Security Ultimate, F-Secure Total, Kaspersky Premium, Norton 360 en TotalAV.

Hoe je deze cijfers leest
- De tests verschillen in datum, macOS-versie, steekproef en methode. Combineer ze daarom niet tot één ranglijst.
- De aantallen zijn teststeekproeven, geen maat voor de kans dat jouw Mac wordt geïnfecteerd.
- AV-Comparatives benadrukt dat 100% detectie in een test niet garandeert dat een product altijd alle dreigingen blokkeert.
- Een test is een momentopname; nieuwe malware en nieuwe productversies kunnen de uitkomst veranderen.
Waar je op let bij het kiezen
- Bescherming tegen Mac-malware in een test die recent is en jouw macOS-versie dekt.
- False positives en het omgaan met quarantaine: een scanner die legitieme bestanden blokkeert, kost je tijd.
- Prestaties: merkbare vertraging op je eigen Mac.
- Gebruiksgemak en meldingen: te veel meldingen leiden ertoe dat mensen ze negeren.
- Extra functies zoals phishingbescherming; vraag je af of je ze echt gebruikt.
- Prijs, abonnementsvoorwaarden en compatibiliteit met jouw Mac en macOS-versie. Deze gegevens zijn veranderlijk en niet in de gebruikte bronnen vergeleken; controleer ze op de website van de aanbieder voordat je koopt.
The Bottom Line
Vertrouw op de ingebouwde lagen van macOS als basis en houd je systeem bijgewerkt. Een aparte scanner is een keuze, geen noodzaak: kies hem op basis van recente, vergelijkbare testresultaten en de extra functies die je echt nodig hebt.
