The available studies do not provide a matched, numerical test of a store kiosk against a smartphone AR implementation. They also show why “accuracy” must be defined: an overlay can track a body convincingly while still failing to predict how a garment will fit or which size a shopper should buy. Accuracy depends on the specific camera setup, software, garment data, environment, user population and decision being measured.
For a defensible answer, compare named kiosk and phone systems under identical conditions, using physical try-on or body measurements as ground truth. Until that test is done, a larger display or a personal phone is only a design difference—not evidence of better fit accuracy.

What “accurate” means in a virtual try-on comparison
Virtual try-on systems perform several different jobs. Treating all of them as one accuracy score creates misleading comparisons between a fitting mirror and a phone camera.
Tracking and registration accuracy
Registration is the mechanical part of augmented reality (AR): the virtual garment should remain anchored to the shopper as the person turns, walks, raises an arm or changes distance from the camera. A useful test records drift, sudden jumps, loss of body tracking and recovery time after an occlusion. A stable image can be visually impressive even when it says nothing about the garment’s true size.

Visual representation accuracy
This asks whether the system depicts the product itself correctly. Relevant details include garment outline, sleeve and hem position, color, texture, logos, folds and which body parts appear in front of or behind the item (occlusion). Representation can be judged by trained raters or by pixel and geometry comparisons with a reference image, but a good visual match is still not proof that the physical garment will fit.
Fit and size-prediction accuracy
Fit accuracy concerns the relationship between the virtual representation and the real product on the shopper’s body. A system might need to predict whether a garment is tight, loose or acceptable, or recommend a size that matches the result of physical try-on. This requires a defined ground truth—such as a measured body, the size that fits under a retailer’s policy, or a physical fitting assessment. No common numerical fit-error result for kiosks and phones has been published.
Decision usefulness
The practical question is whether the experience helps a shopper choose a suitable item, color or size. Decision usefulness can be measured by correct-size selections, returns, exchanges, confidence and completion rates. These outcomes are influenced by product information and user behavior as well as camera accuracy, so they should be reported separately.

What the available studies actually tested
Published AR try-on and retail-deployment findings are informative, but they do not answer the kiosk-versus-phone question with a head-to-head accuracy benchmark.
AR try-on compared with physical try-on
Chung, Shin and Baytar conducted a within-subject quasi-experiment in a dress-shopping scenario. Participants considered AR virtual try-on and physical try-on, with repeated measures. The authors report that AR conveyed dress size and color accurately in that setting and that participants were able to select the right garment size. This is a bounded positive result: it concerns one stimulus and a particular participant group, not every garment or AR implementation.
The sample was limited to female students in North America. The experiment did not compare a store kiosk with a smartphone, did not establish a universal fit error, and should not be generalized to other body shapes, shoppers, products or camera configurations.

Qualitative retail experiences in Seoul
Wu and colleagues’ 2022 field study examined retail technologies in Seoul, including AR fitting mirrors for eyewear and apparel. Fourteen university participants took part in a qualitative study. The mirror experiences and a separate mobile-based virtual-reality cosmetics experience were not a matched phone-AR-versus-kiosk-AR experiment. The outcome was participant perception rather than measured garment-fit error, so it provides deployment context rather than an accuracy ranking.

Perceived quality dimensions from a fitting-mirror study
A 2022 study published by the Korean Association of Human Ecology analyzed 173 usable responses about an AR virtual-fitting system. It grouped perceived technological attributes under representation fidelity and interactivity. Those categories are useful when designing an evaluation—people notice how faithfully the item is represented and how naturally they can interact with it—but the study’s mirror experiment did not benchmark mirror accuracy against phone AR.
A 2026 warning about fit representation
Li, Yao, Wang and Guo’s 2026 article in Information Systems Research models retail adoption and market outcomes with a queueing-game-theoretic approach. It is not a camera or tracking experiment. The authors caution that AR fitting may fail to represent clothing fit accurately, writing: “Despite these advancements, AR technologies often fall short of providing an accurate representation of how clothing fits, resulting in potential mismatches between consumer expectations and the actual product.” That statement identifies a fit-representation risk; it does not show that kiosks or phones are the cause, or that one form factor is better.
Measurement services can be a separate layer
In a 2020 company announcement, MySize said its measurement service had been integrated with SWEET FIT’s AR fitting-mirror platform to support brand-specific size selection. This is a vendor-reported historical integration, not independent evidence of current availability or accuracy. It illustrates an important architecture point: body measurement and size recommendation can be supplied by a separate service rather than inferred solely from the display device.
Why the device form factor does not determine accuracy
A kiosk and a phone differ in mounting, camera position, screen size, networking and user control. None of those differences guarantees a better result. Accuracy is produced by the complete system: sensors, calibration, body-pose estimation, garment representation, sizing rules and the conditions in which the shopper is captured.

Camera geometry and distance
A fixed mirror can keep the camera at a known height and distance, while a phone may be held too close, too far away or at an angle. Conversely, a phone can be placed on a stand or used with a rear camera that has different resolution and depth capabilities. The comparison should record camera model, lens, height, distance, field of view and whether the user or an attendant controls positioning.

Lighting and background
Backlighting, glare, shadows, reflective floors and patterned backgrounds can degrade body segmentation and color estimation on either platform. A kiosk in a controlled fitting area may have repeatable lighting, but a busy store can introduce occlusions and changing illumination. Phone AR must cope with homes, streets and fitting rooms that vary even more. These are operating conditions to measure, not assumptions about a winner.
Calibration and maintenance
Mirrors and cameras can drift when they are moved, bumped or updated. A phone’s sensors and operating system can change between models and software releases. A fair study logs calibration date, software version, device temperature, network state and any re-calibration performed between participants.
Garment data and simulation
Cloth meshes, texture maps, pattern measurements, fabric stretch and brand-specific size charts often matter more to fit prediction than the screen on which the result appears. Two devices running the same model may produce nearly identical fit estimates; two systems on the same device may differ because their garment data and sizing rules differ.

A kiosk may guide a shopper through a prescribed pose, while a phone app may let the user retry, switch cameras or ask another person to help. Assistance can improve data capture but can also make a test unlike ordinary use. Record whether an attendant intervened and how many attempts were allowed.
How to compare a kiosk and phone system fairly
A retailer or researcher seeking an answer should predefine the task, ground truth and error metric before collecting results. The following protocol prevents a visually attractive demo from being mistaken for a fit study.
- Name the exact systems. Record the kiosk hardware, phone model, operating-system version, AR software build, garment catalog version and sizing rules. “Kiosk AR” and “phone AR” are categories, not testable products.
- Define the decision. Decide whether the primary outcome is tracking stability, garment appearance, size recommendation, fit classification or purchase decision. A single session can measure several outcomes, but each needs its own score.
- Set the ground truth. Use standardized body measurements, a controlled physical try-on, or both. For a size recommendation, document the size that meets the retailer’s stated fit criteria rather than relying only on shopper preference.
- Match the products. Use identical garments, colors and size charts in both systems. Include multiple silhouettes and materials instead of one easy-to-render dress. Record inventory and catalog changes during the test.
- Balance the participants. Recruit across the body sizes, shapes, heights, skin tones and mobility patterns the service is intended to support. Randomize whether each person starts with the kiosk or phone to reduce learning and fatigue effects.
- Standardize capture conditions. Keep lighting, floor markings, pose instructions, clothing under the virtual item, camera distance and allowed movement consistent. If the systems are designed for different conditions, test both their recommended condition and a realistic off-nominal condition.
- Collect raw outcomes. Save tracking-loss events, alignment measurements, recommended sizes, fit judgments, confidence, retries and time to decision. Do not report only a satisfaction score.
- Report uncertainty and failures. Give sample size, missing sessions, confidence intervals or other uncertainty estimates, and the proportion of attempts that failed before a recommendation was produced.
Metrics that make results interpretable
| Capability | Example metric | Suitable ground truth |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking and registration | Median and 95th-percentile landmark or garment-edge drift in pixels or centimeters during turns and distance changes; tracking-loss rate and recovery time | Calibrated reference markers or manually verified body landmarks |
| Visual representation | Color difference, silhouette overlap, landmark error and blinded human ratings for details and occlusion | Reference photographs or scans under the same pose and lighting |
| Size recommendation | Percentage of recommendations matching the ground-truth size; confusion matrix by size; under-sizing and over-sizing rates | Documented physical try-on protocol or verified measurements |
| Fit classification | Agreement for categories such as acceptable, tight and loose; precision, recall and calibration of confidence | Expert or participant fit labels collected under a defined rubric |
| Decision usefulness | Correct selections, return or exchange rate, completion time, retries and confidence | Observed purchase or fitting outcome, with product and shopper factors controlled |
Do not collapse these measures into one “accuracy” number unless the weighting is explicit. A system can have excellent registration and poor size prediction, or the reverse.

Factors that commonly create apparent accuracy gaps
Pose and occlusion
Crossed arms, long hair, bags, coats and turning sideways hide body landmarks and garment edges. Require a pose that matches normal use, then test the movements shoppers actually make. Report whether the system rejects difficult frames or silently produces a misleading overlay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClothing worn under the virtual item
Bulky layers change the visible silhouette. A test performed over a thin shirt may overstate performance for winter clothing. State the base clothing and include realistic variations when the product category requires them.
Body-size and skin-tone coverage
Performance can vary across body proportions and image conditions. Stratify results rather than reporting only an overall average that hides failures for a subgroup. A kiosk’s fixed camera does not remove this modeling issue, and a phone’s portability does not create it by itself.
Garment construction
Rigid accessories, stretch knits, draped fabrics, oversized cuts and fitted tailoring impose different simulation problems. A virtual overlay that works for color and outline may not capture tension, compression, weight or movement in a real fabric.
Network and rendering delays
Cloud processing can introduce latency or temporarily serve a lower-quality model. Record connectivity and whether the system continued with a cached garment. A delayed but precise frame and a fast but unstable frame should not receive the same score.

Best Value
Choosing a deployment approach by use case
When a kiosk may be operationally suitable
A fitting mirror can be appropriate when a retailer wants a shared, guided station with a known camera position, a large display and an attendant or standardized workflow. Those features may make data collection more repeatable. They do not establish better fit prediction; the retailer still needs to validate garment models and size rules against physical outcomes.
When phone-based AR may be operationally suitable
A phone experience can reach shoppers at home and during browsing, allowing repeated use and personalized history. Its accuracy will depend heavily on how users position the camera, follow pose instructions and operate under varied lighting. A phone deployment should therefore test setup compliance and failure recovery, not just ideal demonstrations.
When neither is sufficient on its own
If the business decision requires high-confidence sizing for complex garments, combine AR visualization with measured body dimensions, a carefully maintained size chart and a clear uncertainty message. The display can help with appearance and style while another process supplies measurement or fit evidence.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: treating a bigger screen as proof of accuracy. Correction: measure registration, representation and fit separately. Screen size affects viewing, not necessarily the underlying model.
- Mistake: treating personal-device convenience as proof of accuracy. Correction: test phone camera placement, lighting and user compliance under normal conditions.
- Mistake: using one successful demo. Correction: include repeated trials, different garments and participants, and publish failure rates.
- Mistake: comparing different products or size charts. Correction: use identical garment data and freeze catalog versions during the test.
- Mistake: calling a perception survey an accuracy benchmark. Correction: label perceived fidelity and interactivity as user-perception outcomes, then collect physical or measured ground truth for fit.
- Mistake: inferring a device result from a retail-economics model. Correction: keep market-adoption findings separate from camera and fit-error measurements.
- Mistake: reporting the “right size” without defining right. Correction: state whether it means a physical try-on judgment, body-measurement rule, historical purchase size or participant preference.
What shoppers can and cannot infer from a try-on display
A convincing overlay can help a shopper compare colors, silhouettes and approximate proportions. It cannot, by appearance alone, prove that seams will sit correctly, fabric will stretch as expected or a recommended size will match a physical garment. Ask whether the service has published how it validates sizes, what products are covered and what happens when tracking or measurement confidence is low.
Claims such as “accurate sizing” should be read narrowly unless they identify the garment range, population, validation method and error rate. These published findings support cautious use of AR as a decision aid, not a blanket replacement for physical fitting.
What is established—and what remains unknown
| Question | What the evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can AR convey a dress’s size and color? | One controlled apparel study reported accurate conveyance and correct size selection in its limited scenario. | That every AR system, garment, shopper or device form factor will perform similarly. |
