Whether anything leaves the kiosk, who receives it, how long it remains, and whether the system performs facial analysis depends on the retailer’s specific software and configuration. There is no industry-wide privacy switch.
Before you pose for a camera, read the kiosk notice, identify the retailer and technology provider, decline the camera or try-on prompt if possible, and ask how to delete both the original image and any generated preview. A store’s separate security cameras are a different system and are not automatically covered by the try-on choice.

The direct answer: what a retailer may see
“Virtual try-on” describes an outcome, not a single data flow. A kiosk can use a live camera feed to place glasses, makeup, clothing, or another product over your image. Another implementation can ask you to select or take a still photo, upload that file to a technology vendor, and return a processed result. Some systems calculate measurements or facial landmarks; others only render an overlay. A retailer may receive the source image, a result, measurements, product information, or only an interaction record, depending on the setup.

Facial recognition generally means identifying or matching a person. Facial scanning, landmark detection, and measurement can support a preview without identifying you. Walmart’s eyeglass notice describes facial scanning and calls the resulting information biometric in that feature, while Corlen says its kiosk photo is not subjected to face recognition or biometric analysis. Those statements can both be true because they describe different services.

The only reliable way to know what a particular kiosk does is to read its notice and ask the retailer or named provider. A policy for an online or mobile tool may not describe a physical kiosk in a store.
The main data paths behind a try-on
Live camera processing on the device
In an on-device augmented-reality flow, the camera feed is processed by the phone, tablet, or kiosk computer to align a product overlay. TryOn documents this model for its real-time AR mode and says the camera feed is not uploaded to TryOn. “Not uploaded to that vendor” does not prove that no local copy, analytics event, operating-system log, or separate store camera exists; it describes that vendor’s stated handling of that particular mode.
A still photo uploaded for processing
A photo-based mode has a different path. TryOn’s AI Swap documentation says a selected photo is uploaded to TryOn and forwarded to a processing engine. The documentation does not state how long that processing engine retains the file, so no retention period should be inferred. Ask whether the processor receives the original image, a transformed copy, or both, and whether deletion from the retailer’s system also reaches the processor.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Measurements and derived information
Software can derive measurements, face or body landmarks, skin-tone estimates, or fit-related values from camera input. A rendered preview is another output: it may show the product on your image without being the same file as the source photograph. A request for deletion should therefore name the original image, generated previews, measurements, landmarks, and other derived records separately.
Retailer and provider roles
The notice may name a retailer, a kiosk company, and additional processors. Corlen’s agreement says the retailer is the controller and Corlen the processor where applicable data-protection law applies; it also says shopper and garment images are processed to create a preview. Those legal roles matter because the controller usually determines the purpose and answers rights requests, while a processor handles data on the controller’s instructions. The notice should tell you whom to contact.

Examples of how real implementations differ
The following examples illustrate why a kiosk’s brand, mode, and notice matter. They are not industry-wide defaults.
| Implementation or notice | Input and purpose | Sharing or recipient information | Retention or deletion statement | Recognition statement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TryOn real-time AR | Live camera feed processed on the shopper’s device to render an overlay. | TryOn says the feed is not uploaded to it for this mode. | Not stated in the cited documentation. | No identification claim stated. |
| TryOn AI Swap | A selected still photo is uploaded for an AI-generated try-on result. | TryOn says the photo is forwarded to a processing engine. | The processing engine’s retention period is not stated. | No identification claim stated. |
| Walmart eyeglass virtual try-on | The notice describes facial scanning for the eyeglass feature. | The notice says measurements and images may be shared with Perfect Corp. | Walmart says biometric data for this feature is deleted within 48 hours. | Walmart calls the scanned information biometric; the notice does not establish that every try-on mode identifies a person. |
| Walmart makeup virtual try-on | Images are created for a makeup preview. | The notice says measurements and images may be shared with Perfect Corp. | Walmart says makeup try-on images are not stored. | Do not extend the eyeglass facial-scanning description to this feature. |
| Corlen kiosk | A kiosk photo is used to generate a try-on result. | The retailer and Corlen may have controller/processor roles under applicable law. | Corlen’s notice, updated August 2026, says photos are deleted after two hours or immediately after “Delete My Photos” is tapped. | Corlen says it does not run face recognition or biometric analysis on the kiosk photo. |
| Coty make-up, foundation, nail, and skin-tone tools | Camera images support AR applications. | The notice describes processing by purpose and channel. | Retention varies by purpose and channel in the notice. | Coty notes that information may qualify as biometric information in some jurisdictions; its online or app terms do not establish how a physical kiosk operates. |
The Walmart and Corlen periods are provider-stated practices for named services, not independent audits or population statistics. A kiosk can change software or settings, so check the current notice at the time of use.
Try-on is not the same as store surveillance
A voluntary preview and a security camera can operate at the same location for unrelated purposes. Walmart separately describes in-store cameras and automated technologies that may capture images for checkout, theft deterrence, or store design. The Federal Trade Commission’s December 2023 Rite Aid announcement concerned alleged facial-recognition surveillance and a proposed settlement; it did not establish that a virtual try-on kiosk participates in that system.
Do not assume that accepting a try-on gives the store permission to use your image for security, or that declining the try-on disables cameras elsewhere in the building. Conversely, do not describe a try-on camera as surveillance without evidence that the systems are connected. Ask which camera and which purpose the notice covers.
How to opt out before the camera starts
- Read the notice before selecting a product. Find the retailer’s name, the kiosk or try-on provider, the purpose of collection, recipients, retention period, and a deletion contact. Privacy information should be available at or before collection. The Information Commissioner’s Office states in UK guidance: “You must provide privacy information to people at the time you collect their personal information from them, or ahead of time.”
- Decline the camera or try-on prompt. If the screen offers “Decline,” “Not now,” or a camera-permission choice, use it. Walmart describes consent before use for the virtual try-on experiences covered by its notice, but other kiosks may present a different interface.
- Ask for a non-camera route. Request a physical sample, a standard size guide, a staff-assisted fitting, or another option. Ask whether declining leaves an analytics or interaction record; the available examples do not establish one universal answer.
- Do not rely on your phone’s settings for a store kiosk. A phone permission controls that phone. It does not necessarily control a retailer-owned tablet, kiosk camera, or separate store cameras.
- Use a displayed delete control. If the kiosk offers “Delete My Photos,” tap it before leaving. Corlen documents this immediate-delete control. Confirm whether it covers the source photo, the generated result, measurements, and copies held by a processor.
How to request deletion after a visit
Contact the retailer identified on the kiosk notice. If a technology provider is named, send the request to that provider as well, or ask the retailer to forward it. Include enough detail for the organization to locate the session without sending unnecessary personal information.

Please identify the controller, processors or other recipients for this session and confirm in writing what was deleted and the applicable completion date. Rights and response times vary by jurisdiction. In the UK, the ICO’s transparency guidance identifies purposes, recipients, retention, and individual rights as information people should receive. In other regions, the applicable privacy notice and local law control the available request and any identity-verification step.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What to ask staff when the notice is unclear
Use specific questions rather than asking generally whether the kiosk is “safe.”
- Does the camera feed stay on this device, or is a photo uploaded?
- Which company receives the image or any measurements?
- Is the image used only to render the selected product, or also for recommendations, analytics, training, advertising, or security?
- Does the system identify or match me, or does it only measure landmarks for alignment?
- How long are the source image, generated preview, measurements, and logs kept?
- Does the delete button remove processor copies and backups, or only the kiosk copy?
- What is the contact for a later access or deletion request?
- Does declining the preview affect checkout, loyalty records, or any unrelated store camera?
Ask for the answer in writing or photograph the posted notice where store rules permit. A staff member’s verbal assurance may not describe the provider’s actual retention settings.
Common situations and the right response
The kiosk never displayed a privacy notice
Do not assume that silence means no collection. Decline the feature and ask the manager for the current notice and the privacy contact. The ICO’s UK guidance expects privacy information at or before collection, and FTC staff guidance recommends clear notice and choice in facial-recognition contexts.
You tapped “delete,” but want confirmation
Record the time, kiosk number, and mode, then ask whether the control deleted only the kiosk cache or also the generated image, measurements, and processor copies. Corlen’s stated two-hour automatic deletion and immediate button deletion are useful examples, not proof that every provider implements deletion the same way.

You uploaded a photo and cannot find the provider’s retention period
Ask the retailer to identify the processing engine and its retention schedule. TryOn’s AI Swap documentation confirms upload and forwarding but does not state how long the processing engine keeps data. Do not infer a deadline from another TryOn mode or another retailer.
You are worried that the kiosk recognized you
Ask whether the system performs identification, face recognition, facial scanning, or only alignment measurements. Walmart’s eyeglass notice and Corlen’s kiosk notice use materially different descriptions. A preview alone does not prove that a face was matched to a name or account.
You want to avoid every camera in the store
Avoiding the try-on does not necessarily avoid security, checkout, or design-analysis cameras. Ask the store which surveillance notices apply and what choices, if any, local law provides. Covering the kiosk lens or changing a personal phone setting is not an established opt-out for retailer-controlled cameras.

What the official guidance says about notice and choice
The FTC’s 2012 staff report advises companies to tell consumers how long images are stored, who has access, and what rights consumers have regarding deletion. It also recommends affirmative express consent before materially different uses of images or derived biometric data. This is guidance, not a universal technical specification for every kiosk.
Best Value
The ICO’s statement about information at or before collection is UK guidance. It does not automatically determine the law in another country, but it gives shoppers a practical checklist: purpose, recipients, retention, rights, and a contact route should be understandable before the camera is used.
A practical privacy checklist
- Identify the retailer and the kiosk provider.
- Determine whether the mode uses live frames, a still upload, or both.
- Ask whether processing occurs on the device or through a remote service.
- Distinguish preview rendering from facial scanning or identification.
- Record the stated recipients and retention period.
- Decline the prompt if the explanation or choice is inadequate.
- Use any displayed delete control before leaving.
- Request deletion of source images, previews, measurements, derived data, and processor copies.
- Treat store surveillance cameras as a separate question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I assume a virtual try-on photo is deleted when I close the kiosk?
No. Deletion depends on the provider. Corlen states two-hour automatic deletion and immediate deletion through its button, while other implementations state different or no periods.
Does a try-on kiosk always use facial recognition?
No. Some systems use camera frames or measurements only for alignment. Walmart describes facial scanning for its eyeglass feature, while Corlen says its kiosk photo is not used for face recognition or biometric analysis.
If I deny camera permission, can the store still keep a record?
Possibly. The cited examples do not establish one universal rule about analytics or interaction logs after a declined prompt. Ask the retailer what, if anything, is recorded.
Who should receive a deletion request?
Start with the retailer named in the kiosk notice, then include any named provider or ask the retailer to forward the request. Specify the source image, generated results, measurements, derived data, and processor copies.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal virtual try-on privacy model or opt-out switch. Read the kiosk notice, decline camera use when possible, ask exactly where images and measurements go, use any delete control, and send a detailed deletion request to the retailer and named provider. Keep try-on processing separate from the store’s unrelated surveillance systems.
