The safer way to pay online is to avoid typing your everyday card number whenever the checkout supports a substitute credential. Use a virtual card number supplied by your card issuer, or choose a digital wallet such as Apple Pay. A virtual number replaces the primary account number for supported transactions; a wallet can send a device- or transaction-specific token instead of the number printed on your card. Neither option is universal, and neither proves that a seller is trustworthy, so verify the business and keep monitoring your account.
What to use instead of your regular card number
There are two practical substitutes for entering the number printed on your physical card.

Virtual card numbers
A virtual card number is an issuer-created online credential linked to your existing account. The PCI Security Standards Council uses the term for issuer tokens that replace the primary account number with an alternative value. It is not a second physical card and normally draws from the same credit line, billing account and fraud protections as the underlying card.
Depending on the issuer, the number may be reusable, limited to one merchant, or disposable after a transaction. Some issuers show it inside their banking app; others provide a browser extension or a digital-card page. The exact controls, expiration date, security code and rules for refunds or recurring charges vary by issuer.

Digital wallets
A digital wallet stores an eligible card and presents a substitute credential during a supported checkout. Apple says Apple Pay online and in apps uses a Device Account Number together with a transaction-specific security code rather than sending the actual payment-card number to the app. The merchant still receives the order, shipping and contact information needed to complete the sale, but the underlying card number is not passed through that payment flow.
Wallet availability depends on the merchant, device, operating system, browser, country and card issuer. A wallet button missing from checkout means that route is unavailable for that purchase; it does not indicate a problem with your card.
How the protection works—and what it does not do
When a merchant stores your normal card number, a breach or an overly broad internal access policy can expose that number for use elsewhere. A substitute number narrows that exposure. If a merchant-specific virtual number is disabled, a stolen value may be useless at another business. A wallet token can also be restricted to a device or transaction, reducing the value of intercepted payment data.

This is payment-credential protection, not anonymity. The seller may still receive your name, email address, phone number, delivery address, order contents, IP address or other data required for fulfillment and fraud screening. A token also cannot make a dishonest merchant safe, prevent account takeover, or guarantee that a dispute will be approved.

Recurring payments need special care
Before using a disposable or merchant-specific number for a subscription, check how your issuer handles recurring transactions. Some issuers let approved recurring charges continue; others decline them when the number changes or is closed. Ask how refunds, renewals, card replacement and canceled subscriptions are treated. There is no single rule across issuers, so do not assume a virtual number will behave like your permanent card number.
Check whether your issuer offers a virtual number
Eligibility is issuer-specific. Google says its online virtual-card feature works only with eligible cards from participating banks or networks in selected countries or regions, and some merchants or apps do not accept those numbers. American Express, for example, describes a virtual-number feature for eligible U.S.-issued cards in Chrome on desktop or Android and, where available, Android apps. That example does not establish availability for every American Express card, country or browser, nor for other issuers.
- Open your issuer’s official mobile app or type its web address yourself rather than following an unsolicited message.
- Look for labels such as Virtual card, Virtual card number, Digital card number or Generate card. Search the app help center if the option is not on the account overview.
- Read the display for the number, expiration date, security code, spending limits, merchant restrictions and whether the number is reusable.
- Check the issuer’s instructions for subscriptions, refunds, chargebacks and closing the number. Save those instructions before placing an order.
- At checkout, enter the virtual number exactly as displayed. Use your normal billing address unless the issuer specifically gives different instructions.
- After authorization, keep the confirmation and set an alert for the transaction. If the merchant later says the payment failed, check the virtual-number status before trying a second number.
Do not download a supposed virtual-card tool from an advertisement or an email link. The feature should be reachable from the issuer’s authenticated app or official site, and the issuer should explain who can use it.

Pay with a digital wallet when the button is available
- Confirm that your card is already added to the wallet and that the wallet shows it as eligible for online payments.
- At checkout, select the wallet button rather than the option that asks you to type the full card number.
- Review the merchant name, total, delivery address, selected card and any recurring-payment wording in the wallet sheet.
- Authenticate with the device passcode, fingerprint, face recognition or wallet password as requested.
- Save the order confirmation and watch for the issuer’s transaction alert.
Apple’s documented online and in-app flow sends a Device Account Number plus a transaction-specific security code; Apple says neither Apple nor the device sends the actual payment-card number to the app. That statement describes the payment credential, not every piece of information exchanged during checkout.

Google distinguishes its online or in-app virtual-card feature from virtual cards created on a device for tap-to-pay. A card that works for contactless purchases may not support an online virtual number, and an online number may not be accepted by every website or app.
Which option fits your purchase?
| Situation | Best first choice | Reason | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time purchase from a supported website | Virtual card number or wallet | Substitutes the underlying card credential | Merchant acceptance and the amount |
| Purchase in an app with a wallet button | Digital wallet | Fast device authentication and tokenized payment flow | Correct app, seller and delivery details |
| Subscription or recurring billing | Issuer virtual number only after checking its recurring-charge policy | Disposable numbers may be declined at renewal | Renewal, refund and cancellation handling |
| Merchant has no wallet button and rejects the virtual number | Recognized merchant with a credit card as fallback | Some checkouts accept only ordinary card credentials | Business identity, HTTPS connection and alerts |
| Unknown seller or unsolicited offer | Do not pay until the business is verified | A token cannot make an untrustworthy seller safe | Independent contact details, policies and reputation |
Verify the seller before entering any payment credential
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers not to provide credit-card or bank-account information online unless they are familiar with the business asking for it. Apply that test even when a wallet or virtual number is available.
- Type the business address into your browser or use a bookmark you created; do not rely on a link in an unexpected text or email.
- Check that the checkout address uses HTTPS, but remember that encryption only protects the connection and does not establish the seller’s honesty.
- Read the total price, shipping charge, taxes, delivery estimate, return terms and subscription language before authorizing.
- Use contact information and a physical business identity that you can verify independently. A polished site, countdown timer or familiar logo is not proof of legitimacy.
- Do not send a card number, security code, one-time passcode or banking password to a person who contacts you claiming to be support.
A wallet may fill in contact and shipping fields automatically. Review every field before confirming because convenience can hide an old address or an unwanted card selection.

- Open the issuer’s official app or call the number on the back of the card. Do not use a phone number supplied in a suspicious message or on an unverified page.
- Lock or freeze the card or virtual number if your issuer offers that control, while preserving evidence of the transaction.
- Report the charge promptly and follow the issuer’s dispute process. Provide the merchant name, date, amount, order information and why you did not authorize it.
- Change a compromised account password and review other transactions, saved cards and authorized users. A stolen wallet token may indicate a wider account or device problem.
- Continue checking statements and alerts until the issuer confirms the investigation or replacement is complete.
The FTC’s lost-or-stolen-card guidance emphasizes prompt reporting and using the issuer’s dispute procedures. A virtual number can be closed or replaced, but you should still report unauthorized activity on the linked account.

U.S. liability rules are not the same for every card
For U.S. credit cards, federal law generally limits liability for unauthorized use to $50 when statutory conditions are met. The limit is not a promise that every dispute will be resolved automatically: you must notify the issuer and follow its process, and special facts can affect the result.
Do not apply that credit-card rule to a debit card, ATM card or bank-account transfer. Debit protections and notification deadlines differ, and the applicable law can depend on how and when the transaction is reported. Readers outside the United States should consult their country’s rules and their issuer. A wallet or virtual number changes the credential presented to a merchant; it does not change the legal category of the underlying account.
Common mistakes that defeat the benefit
Assuming every virtual number works everywhere
Merchants and payment processors can reject virtual numbers, especially when they require address verification, delayed capture or a recurring authorization. Keep a recognized fallback payment method, but use it only after checking the seller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing a disposable number for a long-term service
A number that expires or is locked to one merchant can break renewals, refunds or a later return. Use a reusable issuer number when the issuer documents support for recurring payments, or choose a wallet and confirm the subscription terms.

Confusing tap-to-pay with online tokenization
A device token created for contactless payment is not necessarily the same as an online virtual card number. Check the feature description for the exact channel: website, in-app checkout, contactless terminal or all three.
Believing tokenization removes all fraud risk
Scammers can still trick you into approving a payment, compromise your email or wallet account, or sell goods they never deliver. Alerts, strong account security, careful merchant checks and prompt reporting remain necessary.
Typing the real number when a safer route exists
If the checkout offers a wallet button or your issuer has already generated a virtual number, use that credential instead of copying the number from the physical card. It reduces unnecessary exposure without changing the purchase amount or delivery process.
A simple routine for safer online checkout
- Start with the merchant: buy only when you can identify and verify the business.
- Choose a substitute credential: wallet first when supported, otherwise an issuer virtual number appropriate for the purchase type.
- Check the details: seller, amount, address, one-time versus recurring terms and refund policy.
- Authorize once and save the confirmation.
- Watch alerts and statements, then report anything unauthorized through the issuer’s official channel.
This routine limits where your permanent card number appears while preserving a practical way to pay. Availability still depends on your issuer, card, device, region and the merchant’s payment system.
