Virgin Australia’s current international travel insurance offers two levels: Travel Safe and Travel Safe Plus. Both list unlimited overseas medical expenses, but Plus adds cover for luggage, travel delays, rental-car excess and several other costs that Travel Safe does not list. Whether that extra breadth is useful depends on your trip, the limits you need and the premium quoted for your circumstances.
This comparison uses the Cover-More/Zurich Australian Insurance Limited PDS that applies to policies issued on or after 25 March 2026. The PDS’s current plan names are Travel Safe and Travel Safe Plus. Check the issue date and certificate on your own policy: older documents may use different names or terms. Cover-More administers the policy; Zurich Australian Insurance Limited is the insurer.

What does Virgin Australia Travel Safe International cover?
The 2026 PDS describes both plans as available for international single trips or annual multi-trip cover. Both list unlimited overseas medical expenses, including emergency repatriation and evacuation, subject to the policy terms and a limit of 12 months from the onset of the illness, condition or injury. Both also list overseas dental expenses up to $2,000 and additional expenses up to an unlimited benefit limit, subject to the wording.

“Unlimited” is a stated benefit limit, not a promise that every expense will be paid. Conditions, exclusions, definitions and the 12-month medical-cover limit still apply. The PDS is the contract to check for the particular event and policy version.

Travel Safe vs Travel Safe Plus: the main benefit differences
The following limits are from the Zurich Australian Insurance Limited/Cover-More PDS for policies issued on or after 25 March 2026. They are maximum benefit limits subject to the policy terms, not estimates of typical claim payments.

These are ceilings, not guaranteed reimbursements: the wording applies, including depreciation and requirements for proof of ownership and reasonable care. Travel Safe Plus allows specified increases to eligible item limits for an extra premium and current proof of value.
Which plan may fit your trip?
Travel Safe
Travel Safe may suit a traveller who is chiefly seeking the shared medical, dental and additional-expenses benefits and is comfortable with the benefit categories it does not list. Do not assume it includes luggage, travel delay, rental-car excess or the other Plus-only benefits in the table.
Travel Safe Plus
Travel Safe Plus is the broader option in the PDS. Its extra categories may matter if you have valuable belongings, a rental car, prepaid connections or events, or want the listed insolvency benefit. Compare the actual policy limits with your likely costs; the caps may be lower than the value of an item or a disrupted trip.

The official plan page characterises Travel Safe as the lower-price basic level and Travel Safe Plus as the higher-level product, but no universal value verdict follows from that description. A meaningful price comparison depends on traveller details, destination, dates, selected cancellation amount and other choices. The available material does not establish independent claim-acceptance statistics, customer-satisfaction results or comparative value.

Choose a cancellation amount
Cancellation cover is selected by the customer, and the chosen amount appears on the Certificate of Insurance and affects the premium. Consider prepaid flights, accommodation, tours and other trip costs when choosing it. The PDS sets plan-specific conditions and COVID-19 sublimits, so check those rather than treating the selected amount as unconditional cover.
Declare a qualifying cruise
For a multi-night ocean or sea cruise, disclose the cruise and pay the additional premium for cruise cover if you want cover for cruise-related events or onboard incidents. The PDS identifies exclusions to that requirement, including river cruises, one-night cruises, ferries and Australian coastal-water cruises. Check the precise itinerary and certificate terms.

Check medical conditions and activities
The PDS sorts pre-existing medical conditions into those automatically included, those requiring assessment and those that cannot be covered. An assessment and extra premium may be required; rely on the approval shown on your certificate for your particular condition. Undiagnosed conditions or symptoms awaiting a medical opinion may not be covered in relation to those conditions.
Some activities are included and additional activity cover may be available. Check the wording against what you will actually do, rather than assuming an activity is covered because it is commonly offered at your destination. Smartraveller’s general travel-insurance guidance also recommends checking activities, health, age, destination, duration, valuables, benefit limits and exclusions; it is a checklist, not a substitute for this policy’s contract.
Annual multi-trip cover is not a year-long continuous trip
The annual option allows multiple trips during a 365-day cover period, up to the maximum journey duration chosen. Virgin Australia’s FAQ lists international trip-duration choices of 30, 45 or 60 days; that is a per-journey limit, not 365 consecutive days of travel. The FAQ also says a short domestic journey under 250 km may qualify if it includes at least one night in paid accommodation. Confirm the live offer and your certificate for the purchase you make.

When cover starts, cooling off and claims
Start date and cooling-off period
Virgin Australia’s FAQ says cancellation benefits begin when the policy is issued; other benefits, including emergency medical and dental, begin on the departure date shown on the policy. It describes a 21-day cooling-off period for a full refund if you have not travelled or made a claim. The PDS also sets out cooling-off conditions. Check the version attached to your certificate before relying on either timeframe.
Making a claim
The FAQ directs customers to lodge a claim online or use a downloadable form, provide receipts and supporting documents, and retain originals in case they are requested. It says to notify the insurer as soon as possible and within 60 days of the return date shown on the certificate; if you are late, attach an explanation. The policy version you hold controls, so verify its process and deadline.
How to assess the policy before buying
Compare the two levels using the same traveller, itinerary and assumptions. Smartraveller advises reading the PDS rather than choosing on price alone. For a useful comparison, check:

- The cancellation amount against prepaid, non-refundable costs.
- Luggage and document totals, item sublimits and proof requirements.
- Rental-car excess, delay, missed-connection and insolvency benefits if relevant to your itinerary.
- Cruise and activity options, plus the medical-condition assessment result.
- For annual cover, the maximum duration of each trip.
- The premium for the exact dates, destinations, traveller details and selections on your certificate.
