Vintage Story Winter Survival Guide: Prepare for Your First Freeze

Start preparing for winter as soon as you have seeds, workable soil, and a dependable shelter. A successful first winter in Vintage Story comes from producing a balanced harvest early, moving it into a cool cellar, sealing the food that would spoil fastest, repairing warm clothing, and scheduling indoor work for the months when crops cannot grow.

There is no single “winter food number” that fits every world. Your required reserve depends on the world preset, your character’s activity, multiplayer population, travel, and how much food you preserve. The practical method is to measure your normal consumption, check the current in-game Handbook for your build, and then store enough for the entire cold period plus a separate emergency supply.

What winter changes in Vintage Story

On standard world settings, the Survival Handbook says you have about 70 in-game days to prepare. That is a planning window, not a guarantee that every world will freeze on exactly the same day: latitude, preset, season length, and later patches can change the calendar. Treat the first part of the year as your production season rather than waiting for visible snow.

Temperature affects agriculture before a hard freeze. The Handbook states that crop growth slows below 10°C and stops below 0°C. Under default temperate settings, the Vintage Story Wiki’s Guide: Productivity in winter describes roughly five months of weather that is too cold for farming. In that interval, outdoor planting and harvesting are unreliable, so winter is primarily a storage, crafting, processing, and construction season.

Winter also raises the cost of mistakes. A long trip consumes food and fuel while exposing damaged clothing to cold. A failed harvest, an unsealed crock, or a cellar that is not actually enclosed can turn a comfortable reserve into a shortage. Your preparation therefore has four linked goals:

  • Grow enough grain and vegetables before temperatures fall.
  • Convert vulnerable harvests into foods and containers that last.
  • Keep shelter, fuel, and clothing ready for reduced outdoor work.
  • Plan indoor projects so the cold season still advances your settlement.

Build the food plan before the first freeze

Start a farm near water

The preparation guide recommends establishing a farm as soon as you have seeds and medium-fertility soil, preferably close to water. A nearby field reduces the time spent carrying water and makes repeated planting, maintenance, and harvesting practical while temperatures are still favorable. Do not postpone the first planting while searching for an ideal long-term location; an early, serviceable plot gives you the harvest that makes later improvements possible.

Keep the farm close enough to your shelter that you can check it during ordinary work. A field that is technically fertile but far away is a poor winter strategy because you will spend more food and daylight traveling to it, and the crop can still be lost when temperatures cross the growth thresholds.

Plant one grain and one vegetable

The preparation guide’s balanced recommendation is one grain plus one vegetable. Grain supports staple foods and can be stored efficiently; vegetables provide variety and are useful in cooked meals. The exact crop names available to you depend on the seeds you find, so use the Handbook and seed tooltips in your installed version to confirm what each plant produces and how long it takes.

Flax is valuable for fiber, clothing, and other material progression, but the guide specifically warns against treating it as your primary food. Reserve part of the field for flax if you need its materials, while protecting enough growing space for edible grain and vegetables.

Use a harvest audit instead of guessing a number

The game does not provide one universal winter quota. To set your own target, observe how much food you actually consume during several normal days:

  1. Choose the meals you expect to eat during winter and note each item’s satiety information in the current Handbook or item tooltip.
  2. Record how many meals you consume during a representative in-game day when you are crafting at home, and separately note a day that includes travel or heavy outdoor work.
  3. Multiply your normal daily requirement by the number of cold days you expect under your world settings.
  4. Add a reserve for travel, failed cooking, visitors or additional players, and a hunting gap. Keep this reserve in a separate container so routine meals do not consume it accidentally.
  5. Recalculate after changing activity. Smithing, building, hunting, and long expeditions can require a larger reserve than quiet indoor crafting.

This method remains valid when season length or difficulty changes because it uses your world’s observed consumption rather than a number copied from another preset.

Make clay and storage a prewinter milestone

Why clay comes before comfort upgrades

The official first-day guide treats clay as an early milestone because it unlocks cookware and better food storage. Locate clay during your first exploration and process it before the end of the growing season. Without fired containers, you have fewer reliable ways to protect a large harvest from spoilage.

Do not wait until the weather turns cold to fire your first batch. Clay work, fuel gathering, and firing all compete for time with farming. Producing containers while crops are growing prevents a last-minute scramble when your harvest is ready.

Prioritize fired storage vessels

Fired storage vessels provide 12 slots and, according to the game guide, have the best spoilage rates among early storage options. Use them first for foods that would otherwise deteriorate quickly, then expand your container supply as clay and fuel allow. Labeling or physically grouping vessels by category—grain, bread, raw vegetables, and prepared meals—makes it easier to see what is being consumed and what is reserved.

Check each container’s block information after placing it. The displayed spoilage information is the practical confirmation that the storage location is doing what you expect; do not assume a container has cellar-level conditions merely because it is indoors.

Build a cellar that actually preserves food

Enclose the room completely

A cellar works when it is fully enclosed and provides cool, stable storage. Digging a shallow hole and leaving an opening, skylight, or missing wall can defeat the purpose. Build the floor, walls, ceiling, and entrance as a continuous enclosure, then place your food containers inside.

After construction, inspect the container’s block information. The spoilage readout should show the lower rate you expect from cellar storage. If it does not, find the missing enclosure or an unsuitable block condition before filling the room with your entire harvest.

Organize the cellar by food risk

  • Fast-spoiling foods: place raw vegetables and other items that deteriorate quickly in the coolest confirmed area.
  • Staples: keep grain and bread together so you can monitor the amount available for daily meals.
  • Prepared meals: reserve a clearly marked section for sealed crocks and food intended for winter consumption.
  • Emergency stock: keep a separate container that is opened only when the main plan falls short or you must travel.

A cellar improves longevity; it does not make food permanent. Rotate older items into meals first and avoid opening every vessel when you are checking supplies, since disorganized stock is easy to waste.

Choose the right preservation method

Method Best use What to check Trade-off
Raw storage Short-term holding while you process a fresh harvest Container spoilage information and cellar conditions Most exposed to decay; not a dependable long-winter plan by itself
Cellar storage Grain, bread, and vegetables that need a cool, stable location The room must be fully enclosed; verify the block information Requires construction and space, but supports a large organized reserve
Cooked food in crocks Meals prepared before winter from ingredients that would otherwise spoil Cook the meal first, then seal the crock when you have wax or fat Uses cooking time and containers, but converts perishables into planned meals
Sealed crocks Longer-term meal storage Seal with wax or fat and confirm the crock’s status Wax or fat is consumed; sealed food is less convenient to alter later
Pickling in barrels Vegetables and other suitable ingredients when salt is available Barrel recipe, salt supply, and completion state Needs barrels and salt, so it may not be available to a new settlement immediately

Seal crocks with wax or fat

The Survival Handbook states: “Sealing crocks with wax or fat further decreases the decay rate 10-fold.” Seal meals after cooking whenever you can spare the sealing material. This is especially useful for dishes made from ingredients that would decay before you could eat them all.

Fat has a second strategic value: it supports fuel-related progression as well as crock sealing. Before using every portion for food, decide how much you need for sealing and for the fuel tasks you expect to perform during winter.

Pickle when salt is available

Pickling in barrels is another preservation route. It is useful when you have a salt source and enough barrels to process a batch, but it should complement—not replace—your cellar and crock plan. Salt, barrel capacity, and processing time can become bottlenecks, so begin pickling before the final harvest rush.

Warmth, clothing, and the cost of travel

Repair before temperatures drop

Repair clothing while you still have easy access to materials and outdoor work. The winter guide discusses fur clothing as a warmth upgrade; the productivity guide advises that your first winter should be spent at home or nearby unless food, fuel, and warm clothing are abundant and in good repair.

Prey - PC
  • In Prey, you awaken aboard Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032.
  • You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever - but things have gone terribly wrong.
  • The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted.

Use that advice as a mobility decision, not merely a clothing checklist. Repaired inexpensive clothing may be adequate for local chores, while a long expedition demands warmer equipment and a larger food and fuel reserve. Inspect durability before departure and repair every critical piece rather than assuming it will last until spring.

Keep fuel in reserve

Fuel supports cooking, firing, heating-related work, and other progression tasks. Gather and store it before winter reduces the productivity of outdoor gathering. Separate everyday fuel from an emergency stack so a single large firing or smithing session does not consume the supply reserved for food processing.

Use a travel decision rule

  • Stay local: choose this by default when your reserve is adequate but clothing or fuel is limited.
  • Travel briefly: do this only for a defined objective, with a return route, food, fuel, and repaired clothing.
  • Travel for an extended expedition: attempt it only when all three reserves—food, fuel, and warm clothing—are abundant and you have an alternative plan if the trip runs long.

Winter travel also consumes time that could be spent processing food or completing indoor projects. If an objective can wait until the growing season, postponing it is often the safer choice.

What to do during winter

Convert the cold season into an indoor production cycle

The productivity guide frames winter as a period for planned indoor work. Queue tasks that do not depend on crop growth:

  • Craft tools, containers, clothing, and building components.
  • Process grain and prepare meals from the stored harvest.
  • Fire additional clay vessels and organize the cellar.
  • Smith and repair equipment while fuel is available.
  • Expand or finish the shelter, workshop, cellar, and storage rooms.
  • Prepare materials and layouts for spring planting so the next growing season starts immediately.

Keep a written or in-game checklist beside your storage area. Completing one project at a time prevents repeated trips outside and makes fuel and material shortages visible before they become emergencies.

Hunt only as a controlled fallback

Winter hunting can maintain satiety when stored food is running low, so it is a legitimate fallback rather than a guaranteed primary plan. Hunting still consumes warmth, time, equipment durability, and travel food. Treat it as a way to extend a reserve or recover from a poor harvest, not as permission to skip preservation.

A practical preparation calendar

Early season: secure production

  1. Locate clay, seeds, water, and medium-fertility soil.
  2. Plant one grain and one vegetable as soon as conditions permit.
  3. Reserve space for flax if you need fiber, but do not replace staple food with it.
  4. Begin gathering fuel and materials for fired containers.
  5. Choose a cellar location close to your shelter and farm.

Middle season: expand capacity

  1. Fire storage vessels and cookware before the main harvest.
  2. Finish the cellar enclosure and verify its spoilage information.
  3. Harvest in stages rather than leaving mature crops exposed while you work on another project.
  4. Cook meals from ingredients that will not last in raw form.
  5. Start pickling suitable foods if you have salt and barrels.
  6. Repair clothing and set aside warm pieces for winter travel.

Final weeks before freezing weather

  1. Move grain, bread, vegetables, and prepared meals into their intended containers.
  2. Seal crocks with wax or fat and reserve enough sealing material for the last batches.
  3. Separate daily food from an emergency reserve and record what each container holds.
  4. Complete fuel gathering and avoid spending the reserve on nonessential experiments.
  5. Finish essential shelter and workshop repairs.
  6. Cancel optional expeditions unless your food, fuel, and clothing meet the winter guide’s abundance standard.

During the cold period

  1. Eat older or more vulnerable food first while leaving the emergency container untouched.
  2. Process, craft, smith, build, and repair indoors according to your checklist.
  3. Inspect clothing and fuel before accepting any travel objective.
  4. Use hunting to supplement a shortfall, not to justify exhausting the stored harvest.
  5. Review the Handbook if a mechanic behaves differently after a patch or world-setting change.

Common failure modes and fixes

“My crops stopped before I finished harvesting.”

Growth slows below 10°C and stops below 0°C. Harvest mature crops promptly, plant earlier in the season, and avoid relying on a late planting to fill the winter reserve. A second field near water can provide insurance when the first planting is delayed.

“Food in my cellar spoils too quickly.”

Confirm that the room is fully enclosed and inspect the container’s block information. Move the food only after the storage readout confirms the lower spoilage condition. Raw food may still decay faster than cooked or sealed food, so process it rather than relying on the room alone.

“I have plenty of ingredients but no winter meals.”

Ingredients are not the same as prepared food. Cook foods that would otherwise spoil, place them in crocks, and seal the crocks with wax or fat. Keep the finished meals grouped so you can see the ready-to-eat reserve.

“I ran out of fuel while food was still available.”

Fuel is part of the winter reserve, not an afterthought. Gather it during the productive season, separate emergency fuel, and schedule firing, cooking, and smithing so one activity does not consume everything needed for another.

“I planned a winter expedition and became stranded.”

Return to local sheltering unless food, fuel, and warm clothing are abundant and in good repair. For future trips, define the objective, carry a return reserve, repair clothing first, and postpone travel that does not have a clear winter benefit.

World settings, versions, and the authoritative reference

The beginner guide’s current context is unmodded Vintage Story 1.22.5, with a verification note referencing a later 1.22.7 check. World presets, installed versions, season lengths, and mods can alter winter behavior. The in-game Handbook is the authoritative reference for the mechanics in your current build, so consult it after a patch or whenever your world uses customized settings.

Use the figures in this guide—about 70 preparation days, the 10°C and 0°C crop thresholds, and roughly five months of cold farming weather—as planning references for standard or default temperate conditions, not as immutable timers for every world. If your Handbook reports different conditions, follow those values and adjust the harvest, fuel, and travel plan accordingly.

Winter readiness checklist

  • Farm established near water with one grain and one vegetable.
  • Flax planted for materials without displacing staple food.
  • Clay collected and fired storage vessels available.
  • Cellar fully enclosed and its spoilage information verified.
  • Grain, bread, vegetables, and prepared meals sorted by use.
  • Crocks sealed with wax or fat where possible.
  • Pickling started when salt and barrels are available.
  • Fuel gathered for cooking, firing, smithing, and emergencies.
  • Clothing repaired, with warm or fur pieces ready for travel.
  • Daily food, emergency food, and expedition food separated.
  • Indoor winter projects listed and materials staged.
  • Handbook checked for the installed version and world preset.

With those pieces in place, winter becomes a predictable work season rather than a race against spoilage and cold. Your first priority is not exploring farther; it is turning the productive months into durable food, reliable shelter, and enough indoor work to carry the settlement safely to spring.
