Find out where the stream is dropping
A Vimeo-to-YouTube livestream has two connections to check: the encoder sends video into Vimeo, and Vimeo sends the simulcast to YouTube. The symptom tells you where to start.
- Vimeo’s preview or incoming stream also drops: investigate encoder output, the connection between the encoder and Vimeo, and firewall access.
- Vimeo remains healthy, but YouTube drops or never appears live: check Vimeo’s YouTube destination settings and the broadcast state in YouTube Live Control Room.

Fix an encoder-to-Vimeo connection that drops
Check bitrate, CPU, frame rate, and output settings
- Look at the encoder’s bitrate while the feed is running. A bitrate stuck at a constant value or reading zero can point to incorrect settings or an encoder that needs to be reset.
- Check CPU usage and frames per second (FPS). Vimeo recommends closing other applications if average CPU use is above 75%; if it remains high, restart the encoder software.
- Make sure the camera or capture device’s frame rate and resolution match the encoder’s output settings.
Vimeo’s troubleshooting guidance lists these maximum encoder settings by plan. Confirm the requirements for your current plan before the event, since platform limits can change.

Give the network enough upload headroom
Vimeo recommends Ethernet on a dedicated, unshared network, along with frequent upload-speed checks. Set the encoder bitrate well below the available upload speed: a connection that barely meets the bitrate can falter when its capacity fluctuates. A wired connection and more headroom address stability, not just peak speed.

Vimeo’s guidance puts it plainly: “Ideally, you should stream over an Ethernet connection on a dedicated (unshared) network.” See Recommended network configuration for live events.
Check firewall access and protocol
An immediate error from an external encoder, a blank preview, or a greyed-out Go Live button can indicate a firewall problem. Vimeo lists RTMPS over port 443 and RTMP over port 1935 for external encoders. If you are on a restricted office, school, hotel, or venue network, ask its IT administrator to check access.

Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it: it encrypts the RTMP connection. Plain RTMP is unencrypted and may be blocked by a firewall. Vimeo also supports SRT, which its guidance describes as suited to unstable networks, but support is more limited and some modes or features are unavailable. Use SRT only if both your encoder and the particular Vimeo event setup support it. Details: Vimeo’s network configuration guidance and Vimeo’s live-streaming protocols.
Fix a Vimeo-to-YouTube destination that drops
Recheck the YouTube destination credentials
In Vimeo’s event destination settings, verify that the YouTube RTMP URL and stream key are the intended ones. A typo or outdated key can prevent the feed from reaching the expected broadcast. Avoid sharing the stream key; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast.

Check whether YouTube requires a manual start
If the YouTube broadcast is scheduled, sending the encoder feed through Vimeo may not make the event live automatically. Vimeo says the operator may need to select Go Live manually in YouTube Live Control Room after the feed begins. Check the scheduled broadcast there rather than assuming a healthy Vimeo preview means YouTube has started.

Protect the recording while troubleshooting
Record locally through the encoder as well as relying on Vimeo’s archive. If a network interruption affects delivery, the local file can preserve a source copy of the event. Vimeo advises: “In order to avoid losing content to a network connection issue, you should make sure to always record your stream locally through your encoder in addition to the archive on Vimeo.” Vimeo Help Center: Troubleshoot live streaming issues.

Vimeo does not establish a universal reconnection delay or guarantee that a particular retry policy will restore every dropped stream. If a connection continues to fail, use the checks above to isolate the failing link and consult Vimeo support with the event and encoder details.
