Match the mount shown on the specific listing to your camera, and confirm compatibility for your exact camera body if you rely on a particular autofocus feature; detailed body-by-body compatibility information is not established here.

The lens covers full frame. On Sony and Nikon APS-C cameras, TechRadar describes its field of view as approximately equivalent to a 39mm lens on full frame, giving a normal-ish perspective for everyday photography rather than the wider framing many people associate with 26mm. TechRadar’s review was published August 16, 2026.
What the lens offers
Viltrox’s Sony E product page lists these specifications; the page does not establish that every listed detail is identical for the Nikon Z version.

The 0.2m minimum focus distance can help frame nearby details, but 0.2× magnification is not macro capability. The 43mm thread accepts filters; a filter is optional, and the right choice depends on the shot. For example, a polarizer can reduce reflections, while an ND filter is useful when you need to cut light for a longer exposure or a wider aperture in bright conditions. Viltrox describes the hood as filter-ready on its launch page. If stacking filters, check that their thickness and the hood do not interfere.
How it handles in the review
TechRadar reviewer Tim Coleman found the lens lightweight and convenient for everyday use. He considered its optical quality impressive for its size, while noting it was not the sharpest lens he had used. In his review, he regularly shot at f/2.8 and reported no discernible sharpness drop there compared with the lens’s best performance around f/5.6–f/8. Those are the reviewer’s observations, not a controlled guarantee for every copy, camera body, or shooting condition.

The f/2.8 maximum aperture gives more light-gathering ability and more scope for background separation than a slower f/4.5 prime, although the result also depends on focus distance, subject distance, and framing. The lens’s short 25.8mm length, as reported by TechRadar, is why the review describes it as a pancake-style option. Its combination of autofocus and manual control rings makes it more involved than an ultra-simple, fixed-control compact lens.

Viltrox 26mm F2.8 EVO vs. Viltrox 28mm F4.5
TechRadar’s comparison positions the 28mm F4.5 as the more compact and less expensive choice, while describing the 26mm F2.8 EVO as a step up in image quality. The practical trade-off is a slower aperture and greater emphasis on minimum size and cost versus the EVO’s faster f/2.8 aperture and manual controls. The review does not establish a universal ranking against all pancake lenses.

Choose the 28mm F4.5 if keeping the kit as small and inexpensive as possible matters more than aperture speed. The EVO is the more suitable direction if you want f/2.8 and the extra control-ring handling in a small autofocus prime.
Weight, dimensions, and price need context
The weight is not consistent across the available specifications: Viltrox lists the Sony E lens at approximately 130g bare, while TechRadar reports 170g and dimensions of 69.4 × 25.8mm. The available sources do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a settled weight for every version or measurement convention. Check the specification for the exact mount and listing you are considering.

Viltrox’s launch page gives launch prices of $299 USD, €319 EUR, and £279 GBP, and says regional pricing and availability vary. The Sony E product page showed $299 and out of stock when accessed October 7, 2026; that is a dated listing snapshot, not a guarantee of current inventory or price. Check the current mount-specific listing and local retailers before purchase. Viltrox announced the lens on July 15, 2026, as reported by DPReview.
Verdict: who should consider it?
The Viltrox AF 26mm F2.8 EVO makes the most sense for a Sony E or Nikon Z photographer who prioritizes a compact full-frame prime but does not want to give up autofocus, an f/2.8 maximum aperture, or manual control rings. The review suggests image quality is strong for the lens’s size, with its own caveat that it is not the sharpest option the reviewer has used. If the overriding goal is the smallest, lowest-cost lens and a slower aperture is acceptable, TechRadar’s comparison favors the 28mm F4.5 on size and price.
