A viewer-controlled cursor is a permission inside a live screen-sharing session; remote desktop is a broader access model that can include viewing, interactive control, session selection, clipboard transfer, and unattended access. The labels are not universal standards. To understand what someone can actually do, check what is shared, whether keyboard and mouse input is enabled, who must approve it, whether the host is present, and which data-transfer features are allowed.
The short answer: control is a permission, remote desktop is an access model
When a presenter shares a screen in a meeting, another participant may see the pointer and, if the presenter grants permission, move the mouse or type. That is viewer-controlled cursor access. It normally exists only for the duration of the active sharing session and is tied to the presenter’s approval.

Remote desktop describes a wider set of connections to another computer. A remote-desktop product may offer view-only observation, full keyboard and mouse control, access to a particular user session, clipboard transfer, file or other data movement, or unattended access when nobody is sitting at the host. Some tools provide only one of these functions; others combine several under one product name.

What a viewer-controlled cursor actually means
View-only observation
In view-only mode, the viewer receives the shared pixels but sends no keyboard or mouse input to the host. The viewer can follow a demonstration, inspect a problem, or watch an application without changing anything on the computer. Apple Remote Desktop documents a separate Observe mode, and Jump Desktop describes Observe as a mode that sends no keyboard or mouse input.
Control granted during sharing
A presenter can often give control to a named participant, or a participant can request it. The host’s settings, an approval dialog, and operating-system permissions can all affect whether input works. In Webex, remote control is part of an existing screen-sharing session: the presenter gives control or the participant requests it, and either side can end the control session.
Control is usually session-bound
Viewer control normally ends when the presenter stops sharing, revokes permission, or leaves the meeting. It is designed for collaboration—such as walking someone through a form or letting a colleague operate an application already being shown—not for maintaining a permanent connection to the computer.
What the viewer may not control
Even when a viewer can move the pointer, the permission may be narrower than full computer access. A tool might share one application window instead of the whole desktop, block privileged prompts, prevent interaction with other sessions, or disable clipboard and file transfer. The visible cursor is therefore evidence that some input is possible, not proof that every part of the host is accessible.
What remote desktop can include
Connecting to a computer or user session
A remote-desktop connection may show an entire computer, a specific application, or an existing user session. Depending on the implementation, the remote user can see the same desktop as the person at the machine, connect to a separate session, or interact with a worker-created environment.

Interactive keyboard and mouse control
Control can be available immediately, enabled after host approval, or limited by policy. Apple Remote Desktop distinguishes Control from Observe for client computers. Microsoft’s Windows Desktop Sharing documentation uses “sharer” and “viewer” roles and notes that a viewer cannot take control of a shared application running as administrator; that page was last updated May 31, 2018, so it is best treated as a historical or API-specific example rather than current setup guidance.
Unattended access
Unattended access is a separate workflow from a person granting control during a call. It allows an authorized operator to connect when no one is available at the host, usually through a preconfigured account, service, or device authorization. Jump Desktop separates its host-approved “Ask to Share Screen” flow from unattended access. If your use case requires maintenance while nobody is present, verify that the product explicitly supports unattended access instead of assuming that a screen-sharing control button does.
Additional data channels
Remote desktop may offer clipboard synchronization, file transfer, audio, printing, or other channels. These are independent permissions. Moving a pointer does not inherently grant clipboard access, and a product can allow control while deliberately blocking data transfer.
Comparison: viewer-controlled cursor, screen sharing, and remote desktop
| Capability | Viewer-controlled cursor in a sharing session | Remote desktop |
|---|---|---|
| What is shared | Usually an application window or the presenter’s current screen | A computer, user session, application, or purpose-built desktop, depending on the product |
| Keyboard and mouse | View-only or enabled after explicit grant/request | May be disabled, host-approved, policy-controlled, or available as part of an unattended connection |
| Host presence | Normally required because sharing is active | May be required for attended support or unnecessary for unattended access |
| How access ends | Presenter or participant ends control; stopping sharing normally ends the session | Disconnect, session policy, host action, administrator action, or service configuration |
| Clipboard and files | Often separate or unavailable | May be supported, blocked, or configurable independently |
| Typical purpose | Demonstration, collaboration, guided troubleshooting, or a one-time task | Support, administration, working on a remote computer, or access when no one is present |
| Operating-system requirements | Meeting application permissions and host settings | Client, host, helper service, account, and operating-system permissions |
Can someone control my mouse during screen sharing?
Yes, but only if the sharing tool supports control and the host enables it. In an attended session, the practical sequence is usually:
- Start sharing the intended window, application, or screen.
- Open the participant or sharing controls and choose the option to give control, or approve the participant’s request.
- Confirm any operating-system permission prompt, such as an Accessibility permission on macOS.
- Watch for the remote pointer or input indicator and supervise the actions being taken.
- Use the same control menu, a stop-control button, or the meeting’s end-sharing command to revoke access.
Webex documents this give-or-request model and states that either side can end remote control. On a Mac being controlled through Webex, the help documentation says Webex needs Accessibility permission for mouse input. If that permission is missing, the participant may still see the screen while clicks do not reach the host.

Control can also be limited by the application being shared. A tool may allow interaction with a normal application but block a secure desktop, an administrator-elevated window, or a different user session. Treat a failed click as a permission or scope limitation before assuming the connection is broken.

Yes. Choose Observe, View Only, or an equivalent mode when the product offers one. This is useful for demonstrations, audits, training, and support calls where the operator needs visual information but must not alter the host.
Ask the host or administrator to verify that keyboard and mouse input are disabled, rather than relying only on the label. Jump Desktop’s Observe mode specifically avoids sending keyboard or mouse input. Apple Remote Desktop separates Observe from Control. Other products may use different names or combine view-only access with a separate request-control action.
- Confirm whether the viewer can request control later.
- Check whether clipboard, file transfer, audio, or printing remain enabled despite view-only mouse access.
- Verify whether the shared content is a whole desktop or only one application.
- Ask who can revoke the session and whether the host receives a visible indicator.
Clipboard access is separate from cursor control
A shared cursor and a shared clipboard are different capabilities. A viewer might click and type while copy-and-paste is blocked, or observe the screen while clipboard transfer is allowed by policy. Check clipboard direction as well: some systems allow host-to-viewer copying, viewer-to-host pasting, both, or neither.
Apple Remote Desktop documents shared clipboard transfer. Cursor’s documented isolated desktop-sharing mode keeps clipboard transfer blocked even though authorized viewers can watch or control the worker desktop. That example illustrates why a permission matrix is more useful than the product’s general “remote access” label.

For sensitive work, disable clipboard and file transfer unless the task requires them. A visible screen can expose information, but clipboard synchronization can move that information into another application or device without any additional on-screen action.
Host presence: attended sharing versus unattended access
Attended sharing
Attended sharing starts with a person at the host. The host can see who is requesting access, approve or reject the request, pause or stop sharing, and observe the remote operator. Jump Desktop’s Ask to Share Screen workflow is an example of this pattern.
Unattended access
Unattended access is configured in advance and is intended for situations such as maintenance, support outside business hours, or reaching a computer in another location. It should have its own authorization, device registration, and audit controls. Do not infer its availability from an ordinary “Give control” button in a meeting application.
Why the distinction matters
Attended control gives the person at the keyboard a chance to notice unexpected actions and terminate access. Unattended access shifts more responsibility to account security, device enrollment, session logging, and policy restrictions because there may be no one present to intervene.

Cursor self-hosted desktop sharing
Cursor’s self-hosted documentation separates two features that are easy to confuse. “Computer use” lets an agent click, type, take screenshots, and drive applications. “Desktop sharing” lets authorized viewers watch or control a Linux agent desktop. Sharing exposes view and view_and_control modes, with view_and_control shown as the default in the documented command.
Best Value
The shared desktop is a worker-created isolated desktop, not the host machine’s own user session. Cursor says its input filter fails closed, clipboard transfer remains blocked, and pixels leave through the worker’s existing outbound connection. Those are implementation details of that environment, not a definition that applies to every remote-desktop product. On macOS, Cursor says computer use requires permissions for its dedicated helper app; its documented desktop-sharing feature is Linux-only.
Apple Remote Desktop
Apple Remote Desktop documents Control and Observe modes for client computers. An administrator can share control with a remote user, and the product documents clipboard transfer. Exact availability and accessibility behavior depend on the Apple Remote Desktop and macOS versions in use; the guide identifies some accessibility features as requiring macOS 26 or later.
Webex
Webex places remote control inside a screen-sharing session. The presenter can give control to a participant, or a participant can request it. Either side can end control. A Mac being controlled needs Webex Accessibility permission for mouse input according to its help documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Jump Desktop
Jump Desktop describes a host-approved sharing request in which the host chooses Allow Control or View Only. Its Observe mode sends no keyboard or mouse input. The product separately describes unattended access for cases in which nobody is at the host, reinforcing that attended control and persistent remote access are different workflows.
Windows Desktop Sharing documentation
Microsoft’s Windows Desktop Sharing documentation uses sharer and viewer roles and records a restriction on controlling an administrator-running application. Because the page is legacy documentation dated May 31, 2018, use it to understand that role distinction and limitation, not as a current Windows configuration recipe.
Cursor Remote Control for local agents
A Cursor changelog entry dated October 6, 2026 describes seeing and messaging local agents from the iOS app while those agents continue running on a computer. That feature is agent communication and monitoring; it does not describe taking over the computer’s desktop cursor. Similar names can therefore conceal very different capabilities.
How to compare two tools before enabling access
Use the following questions in order. Record the answers for each product rather than comparing marketing labels.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- What is shared? Identify whether the tool exposes one application, a complete screen, an existing user session, or an isolated desktop.
- What can the remote party input? Check mouse, keyboard, touch, shortcuts, secure prompts, and administrator-level windows separately.
- Who must approve access? Determine whether the host must accept each session, whether an administrator can preauthorize it, or whether a device token enables unattended entry.
- Who can stop it? Confirm whether the host, viewer, administrator, or any combination can revoke control and whether revocation is immediate.
- Which data channels are open? Review clipboard direction, file transfer, drag-and-drop, printing, audio, and local-drive mapping.
- What remains visible? Check whether the host sees a banner, pointer indicator, participant name, connection notification, or audit event.
- What platform permissions are required? List helper applications, Accessibility permissions, screen-recording permissions, Linux services, account roles, and version requirements.
- What happens when the host is absent? Confirm whether unattended access exists, how it is enrolled, and whether it can be disabled independently of attended sharing.
Common failure modes and fixes
The viewer sees the screen but clicks do nothing
- Check whether the session is in Observe or View Only mode.
- Ask the host to grant control rather than merely share the screen.
- On macOS, verify the required Accessibility permission for the application being used.
- Test a normal application before attempting a secure desktop or administrator-elevated window.
Control works, but copy and paste fails
- Check the clipboard policy independently of mouse and keyboard permissions.
- Confirm transfer direction and whether the product intentionally blocks clipboard synchronization.
- Use an approved file-transfer channel only when policy permits it.
The host cannot find an unattended-access option
- Look for a separate device enrollment or unattended-access feature, not the in-session control menu.
- Confirm that the product edition, operating system, and account role support unattended connections.
- If a person must approve every request, treat the setup as attended sharing.
The remote user can see the wrong desktop
- Determine whether the tool connects to an existing user session, a different session, or an isolated worker desktop.
- Sign out of unused sessions and verify the target account before granting control.
- For support work, have the host identify the application or window being shared before input begins.
Permissions changed after an update
- Recheck Accessibility, screen-recording, helper-app, and service permissions after operating-system or application updates.
- Compare the installed version with the product’s current documentation, especially where guides call out version-specific features.
- Remove and re-add only the affected permission if the operating system shows the helper as authorized but input still fails.
Security checklist before granting control
- Share only the required application or screen; close unrelated documents and password managers.
- Use a named participant or account and confirm the identity before approving control.
- Prefer view-only access for demonstrations and diagnostics that do not require input.
- Grant control for the shortest practical period and revoke it immediately after the task.
- Disable clipboard, file transfer, printing, and drive mapping unless they are necessary.
- Keep unattended access separate from ordinary meeting permissions and disable it when no longer needed.
- Use the least-privileged host account that can complete the task.
- Watch for on-screen indicators and review connection logs where the product provides them.
- Explain to the host what will be changed before the remote operator begins.
Which option fits your situation?
| Situation | Usually the better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Training or demonstrating an application | View-only screen sharing | The audience can watch without receiving input rights. |
| A colleague needs to complete one task while you supervise | Attended screen sharing with explicitly granted control | The host can approve, observe, and revoke the session. |
| Support staff must diagnose a problem while the user is present | Attended remote support or controlled sharing | The user can identify the correct session and stop unexpected actions. |
| Maintenance on a computer at an empty office | Remote desktop with documented unattended access | The workflow is designed for a host that is not present. |
| Strict data-boundary requirements | A tool with separate input and clipboard policies | You can allow control while blocking unnecessary data movement. |
| Automation in a disposable environment | Isolated desktop or worker session | The agent can operate without exposing the machine’s normal user session. |
Bottom line
A viewer-controlled cursor is one narrowly defined permission: a person watching a shared screen may also send mouse or keyboard input, usually after the host approves it. Remote desktop is the larger category, covering observation, interactive control, session access, data-transfer features, and sometimes unattended connections. Compare the actual permissions, approval flow, host-presence requirement, clipboard policy, and platform setup instead of trusting either label.
