Samsung’s listed chip-fabrication sites are concentrated in South Korea, not Vietnam. Samsung Semiconductor identifies Giheung and Hwaseong as chip-fabrication sites and includes Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Onyang among its Korean semiconductor locations. Samsung’s 2025 half-year report lists Vietnam production for smartphones, TVs, and display panels, while its semiconductor-production passage names Korea and Xi’an, China—not Vietnam. Samsung’s stated explanation for its Korean foundry cluster is proximity, knowledge sharing, and fast transport; the reviewed company sources do not explain why it has no listed Samsung Electronics chip fab in Vietnam.
Where are Samsung chips made?
Samsung Semiconductor’s location directory identifies chip-fabrication sites at Giheung (Yongin) and Hwaseong, South Korea. It also lists Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Onyang as Samsung Korea Semiconductor locations. In China, the directory lists Samsung China Semiconductor in Xi’an and Samsung Electronics Suzhou Semiconductor in Suzhou. These are the locations Samsung lists; the directory does not assign every chip model to a particular production line.

Samsung’s foundry page describes different roles across its Korean sites. It assigns mature-process offerings to Giheung, including sensors, power ICs, discrete devices, eFlash, and logic; describes Hwaseong as producing processes from 10nm to 3nm; and says Pyeongtaek mass-produces further advanced nodes. Those are Samsung’s own site descriptions, not a complete line-by-line inventory.

Samsung Electronics’ 2025 half-year interim report lists Vietnam sites for smartphones (SEV and SEVT), TVs (SEHC), and display panels (SDV). In its semiconductor-production passage, the report names facilities in Korea and SCS in Xi’an, China; it does not identify a Samsung Electronics semiconductor chip fab in Vietnam. This describes what that report lists, rather than establishing the status of every Samsung affiliate, supplier, or subcontractor.

Vietnam’s FCBGA project is a different kind of semiconductor-related production
Samsung Electro-Mechanics, a separate Samsung group company, announced investment of KRW 4.27 trillion for FCBGA production expansion at Sejong and approximately KRW 2.51 trillion for facilities to expand its Vietnam plant. FCBGA is a package substrate that connects a semiconductor to a mainboard and carries electrical signals and power; it is not wafer fabrication. The company’s September 29, 2026 announcement says the Vietnam project aims to complete construction and begin operations by June 2030, so this is a future plan, not a completed facility. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ announcement describes the Vietnam subsidiary as an overseas production base intended to serve global volume demand and improve production efficiency and supply stability.
Why are Samsung’s chip factories clustered in South Korea?
Samsung Foundry describes Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek as a coordinated Korean manufacturing “triad.” The company says the three sites are within about an 18-mile radius and benefit from knowledge sharing and fast transport, with technical expertise available across the network. Samsung dates Giheung’s founding to 1983 and Hwaseong’s opening to 2000. These are Samsung’s stated reasons and site history, not an independently established explanation of every investment decision. Samsung Foundry’s manufacturing-sites page says: “Our South Korea fab network forms a triad (Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek) of knowledge sharing and fast transport where we manufacture chips for the world-changing devices.”

The reviewed company sources do not provide a definitive reason Samsung Electronics has no listed chip-fabrication site in Vietnam. They do not establish that a particular wage level, tax incentive, utility cost, labor pool, or supply-chain factor explains that absence. A separate Samsung Electronics disclosure says a semiconductor-capacity investment is intended to address demand for core, cutting-edge system semiconductors and support global supply-chain stability; it does not explain Vietnam’s role or the absence of a listed fab there. Samsung Electronics’ disclosure also notes that target timing and investment amounts may change.
How to compare the two countries accurately
| Activity | South Korea | Vietnam |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Electronics chip fabrication | Samsung lists Giheung and Hwaseong as chip-fabrication sites and also lists Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Onyang among Korean semiconductor sites. | Not identified in the semiconductor-production passage of Samsung Electronics’ 2025 half-year report. |
| Other Samsung Electronics production listed in the 2025 half-year report | Semiconductor production facilities are listed in Korea. | Smartphones, TVs, and display panels are listed. |
| FCBGA package-substrate production | Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced FCBGA production expansion at Sejong. | Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced a Vietnam plant expansion, with construction completion and operations targeted by June 2030. |
The distinction is the type of operation and the Samsung entity involved: wafer fabrication makes chips, while device assembly, display-panel production, and package-substrate manufacturing are different activities. Samsung Electronics’ report and the companies’ location pages are snapshots of what they list; they should not be read as a complete account of every line, product, affiliate, or future change.
