Neither video games nor social media is universally worse for every child. They create different typical experiences, but their effects depend on the child, developmental stage, content, design, timing, social setting and what offline activities they replace. Social media emphasizes networked communication, sharing and feedback; gaming emphasizes interactive play and game mechanics. Many games are also online and social, so the categories overlap.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Parents often ask, “Are video games or social media worse for kids?” Current evidence does not support a universal ranking. There is no direct, controlled estimate showing that one activity causes more harm than the other for the same children and outcomes. Most studies are observational: they identify patterns among media use and well-being, but cannot by themselves prove that the media caused those outcomes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describes digital media as an ecosystem that includes devices, games, social platforms, algorithms, caregivers and broader social conditions. That framework matters because a label such as “screen time” combines very different activities. A child quietly building in a creative game, a child playing a highly competitive online match at midnight, and a child scrolling through distressing public posts are not equivalent exposures.

Relationships can also run in both directions. A child who is lonely, anxious or under stress may turn to a game or platform more often; the experience may then affect mood, sleep or relationships. The National Academies’ 2024 review states: “The committee’s review of the literature did not support the conclusion that social media causes changes in adolescent health at the population level.” That is not a declaration that every experience is harmless. It means the available evidence does not justify a simple population-wide causal claim.

How the two activities typically differ
| Dimension | Video games | Social media |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Interactive play governed by rules, goals, feedback and game mechanics. | Networked communication, content sharing, viewing and responding to other people. |
| Social exposure | Ranges from solitary play to cooperative or competitive online multiplayer; the title and settings determine the contacts involved. | Contacts, posts, comments, messages, recommendations and audience feedback are central features. |
| Feedback pattern | Immediate feedback from challenges, scores, progression systems and game rewards. | Social feedback such as likes, comments, shares, replies, follower counts and peer comparison. |
| Content and contacts | Content is usually selected through the game, with online players or communities added in connected titles. | A child may encounter both chosen and recommended content, as well as known contacts, strangers or public audiences. |
| Typical developmental question | What is the genre, difficulty, online design and social setting, and how does play affect the child? | What platform, audience, content, contact pattern and feedback loop is involved? |
| Main shared concern | Late sessions, unsuitable content, conflict or excessive focus can displace sleep, movement, learning and relationships. | Late use, unsuitable content, conflict or continuous checking can displace sleep, movement, learning and relationships. |
These are patterns, not fixed definitions. A cooperative game can provide meaningful social interaction, while a social platform can be used passively, privately or constructively. The relevant exposure is the actual activity and context, not the name on the app or device.
What is distinctive about social media
Networked communication and public or semi-public audiences
Social platforms connect children to peers, creators and sometimes unknown users. Posts, images, videos, comments and messages can be visible to an audience larger than the child’s immediate circle. That networked quality can support belonging and communication, but it can also bring unwanted contact, harassment, social conflict or exposure to material a child did not seek.
The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory emphasizes that the evidence does not establish social media as sufficiently safe for children and adolescents. This caution is a reason for active supervision and thoughtful design choices, not proof that social media harms every user.
Feedback, comparison and recommendation systems
Likes, comments, shares and follower counts make social approval measurable. Children may compare appearance, popularity, activities or achievements with carefully selected portrayals of other people. Recommendation systems can also continue presenting content after the child’s original choice, creating an experience shaped by both the user and the platform.
Use can be active or passive. Creating a project, maintaining a close friendship or seeking reliable information differs from repeatedly checking feeds or viewing upsetting material. The same platform can therefore produce different experiences for different children, and for the same child at different times.

How common use was in the 2023 U.S. advisory
The Surgeon General reported that, in 2023, up to 95% of U.S. youth ages 13–17 used a social-media platform. Nearly two-thirds reported daily use, and one-third reported using social media “almost constantly.” These figures describe U.S. teenagers at that time; they are not 2026 estimates and are not a directly comparable prevalence measure for video gaming.
What is distinctive about video games
Interactivity and game mechanics
Games ask players to make choices, solve problems, coordinate actions and respond to feedback. The experience can be solitary, cooperative or competitive. Genre matters: a calm creative title, a fast competitive match and a persistent online world place different demands on attention, emotion and time.
Progression systems, points, rankings, unlocks, quests and scheduled events can encourage continued play. Those mechanics are not automatically harmful, but they can make stopping difficult, especially when a child is tired, emotionally invested or playing with friends whose schedules continue.
Online multiplayer is a social environment
Connected games may include voice or text chat, teams, guilds and matchmaking with strangers. That can provide cooperation and friendship, yet it can also expose a child to hostility, pressure, inappropriate language or unwanted contact. Treat an online game with substantial communication as a social environment rather than assuming that “gaming” means solitary screen use.
What is known about cognition
The AAP’s 2026 technical report summarizes a meta-analysis involving people under 18. It found no evidence that video-game use enhanced working memory, while reporting a small beneficial effect on executive-function skills. Those findings do not establish that games broadly improve cognition, nor do they describe every genre or child. Cognitive outcomes are only one part of a wider assessment that includes sleep, mood, relationships, learning and physical activity.

Shared pathways that can affect well-being
Sleep and late-night use
Either activity can delay bedtime, interrupt sleep or make it harder to disengage. A child who continues a match, watches one more video or responds to messages may lose sleep even when the content itself is not distressing. The practical question is whether the timing and design of use are interfering with regular, sufficient rest.

Time is finite. Gaming or social media can crowd out physical activity, homework, reading, family interaction, face-to-face friendships or unstructured play. The AAP’s current policy statement notes: “Although research on children and media remains largely observational, longitudinal and meta-analytic studies show consistent links between more time spent with digital media and less optimal child development, learning, social relationships, and emotion regulation.” The statement describes associations, not proof that media alone caused those outcomes.
Content, contacts and design
Age-appropriate educational content and supportive contacts differ from violent, sexual, frightening or otherwise unsuitable material. Advertising, persuasive design, notifications, autoplay, streaks and social pressure can influence how long a child stays engaged. Review the actual title or platform features instead of treating all games or all social networks as one exposure.
Solo use, shared use and caregiver support
Shared play or viewing can change the experience. A caregiver who knows the game or platform can discuss conflicts, help a child interpret content and set expectations for contacts. Co-use does not remove every risk, but it provides context that isolated use may lack. Conversely, a child may need private communication with trusted peers; supervision should be age-appropriate rather than indiscriminate.
Why age and development change the answer
Young children
Younger children generally need more help identifying advertising, fictional material, unsafe contacts and intense emotional cues. They may also have less control over stopping and less ability to explain why a design keeps them engaged. Consider simple, predictable routines, age-appropriate content and active caregiver participation.

School-age children
School-age children are developing independence while learning to manage friendships, frustration and responsibilities. Ask how a game or platform fits around sleep, schoolwork, movement and in-person relationships. Cooperative play can be socially meaningful, but online communication still requires clear rules about privacy, spending, chat and reporting problems.
Adolescents
Teenagers often have more complex peer relationships and greater autonomy. Social media may be central to maintaining friendships, while online games may be a major social setting. Discuss audience, privacy, group pressure, distressing content and the child’s ability to disengage. A high amount of use alone does not diagnose addiction or establish harm; look at functioning and well-being.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison for families
Use the following questions for the specific activity your child is doing. They are decision prompts, not a validated scoring system.
- Identify the activity. Name the game or platform, genre or format, and whether use is active, passive, creative, competitive, cooperative or communicative.
- Map the social setting. Determine whether the child is alone, playing with known friends, communicating with a group or exposed to strangers and public audiences.
- Check the feedback loop. Look for rankings, likes, comments, notifications, streaks, autoplay, timed events, rewards or other features that encourage continued checking or play.
- Review content and contacts. Ask what the child sees, hears and discusses, who can contact them, and how they can block, mute or report unwanted interactions.
- Check timing and duration. Pay particular attention to use before bed, during homework, during meals and when the child should be moving or sleeping.
- Identify what is displaced. Compare the activity with the child’s sleep, physical activity, learning, family time, face-to-face relationships and emotional recovery.
- Ask about the child’s experience. Is the activity enjoyable, stressful, supportive, frustrating or difficult to stop? Has the child’s mood or behavior changed around it?
- Adjust with the child. Agree on routines, privacy rules, contact boundaries and stopping points, then revisit them as the child, game, platform or schedule changes.
Warning signs that call for a closer look
One sign is not a diagnosis. Consider a closer conversation or professional advice when media use repeatedly coincides with:

Focus on the pattern and its effects rather than assigning a label based solely on hours. If a child is in immediate danger or reports abuse, threats or self-harm, seek appropriate emergency or professional support in your location.

Common comparisons that mislead parents
“Games are active, so they are always healthier”
Interactivity does not guarantee a positive outcome. A game can be highly engaging, socially stressful or played late into the night. Interactivity is one feature to assess, not a health verdict.
“Social media is passive, so every use is harmful”
Social media can support communication and belonging, and its effects vary by content, audience and purpose. The Surgeon General’s caution concerns population-level safety and uncertainty; it is not evidence that every interaction causes harm.
“The number of hours tells us everything”
Amount matters, but timing, content, design, social context and displacement matter too. Two children with the same duration may have very different experiences and outcomes.

What current guidance means for caregivers
The AAP’s 2026 policy statement recommends a developmental and socioecological approach: consider the child, caregivers, digital design and wider systems together. Ask whether media use interferes with sleep, movement, learning, relationships or emotional regulation; what content and contacts are involved; and whether caregiver support or shared use changes the experience.
The AAP’s 2016 family-media-plan policy and related technical report remain historical background on risks, benefits and sleep, but they have been superseded by the 2026 policy statement. Use the current developmental framework rather than applying an old universal screen-time rule to every child.
Bottom line: compare experiences, not labels
Social media’s distinctive risks and benefits arise from networked contacts, public or semi-public sharing, feedback and recommendation systems. Gaming’s distinctive features are interactive play, goals and mechanics, with social exposure varying from solitary use to online multiplayer. Both can support connection or enjoyment, and both can interfere with sleep, movement, learning and relationships when timing, design or circumstances make disengagement difficult.
The most defensible family decision is therefore individualized: examine the child’s age and needs, the specific content and contacts, the design incentives, the time of day, the social setting and the offline activity being displaced. Current evidence does not justify declaring all video games or all social media universally worse for children.
